2021-02-23 12:00:00 (link to chat) | 15 Team Mixed 5 x 5. Really struggling to find a good #20 overall 2nd round pick. It's a keeper league so my choice is likely between three 3Bs....Arenado, Bregman, Rendon...two pitchers....Kershaw, Max or three OFs....Ozuna, Starling Marte, Springer.
Any name of those 8 easily jump out to you? (Vic from Accord, NY) | None jump out. Based on my rankings I'd go with Bregman or Springer. (Mike Gianella) |
2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I have Victor Robles in a keeper league. Will he ever develop into the next Byron Buxton and, if so, is that even a good thing? If Robles didn't get hit by a pitch every third day, no one would even know he was alive. (Chino5 from Hooterville) | It's been a rough slog of late for Robles, but I don't think you should be abandoning ship. And yeah I don't think Buxton would be my point of comparison. If it works it might look a lot more like another frequent-HBPer Starling Marte. I'm still on board. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I would much rather this be a prospect question but between playing and not playing and because we all miss baseball what is the score right now and what inning is it in? (sykklone from IA) | I wish we could be talking about prospects, too! It's the bottom of the fifth inning in Arizona. The Diamondbacks are leading the Tigers 3-1 (no shock), and Starling Marte has continued his torrid start to the 2020 season. He already has a two-run homer and a double in this game. The Martes, Starling and Ketel, have been a dynamic 1-2 punch for the D'Backs this year. If only they had a more consistent back end of the bullpen! (J.P. Breen) |
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on Reggie preciado, Jose Acosta and liover peguero? (Quincy from Ames) | Preciado is 6-foot-4 with loads of room to grow. The dream is potential plus power as he fills out. Maybe a 5/6 FV type. Acosta was old for the DSL (19) in his 2nd assignment there and tore it up (.403/.503/.611). Age matters a ton in the DSL so I would take that performance with a huge grain of salt. Admittedly, there is not much information on Acosta out there, but my gut says he has 5/4/6 potential and he is likely limited to 2B. Watch list him for now to see if he receives a full-season assignment. I doubt he will. Peguero is the best of this bunch. The prize in the Starling Marte trade, he is a silky smooth shortstop with advanced barrel control and explosive bat speed. At just 18 years old, he was one of the youngest players in the Pioneer League, yet he was also among the league leaders in hitting (.364/.410/.559). Peguero has more upside than you’d think, with potential above-average tools across the board as he adds strength. (Jesse Roche) |
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Have a bit of a roster crunch in my keep 8 league. Already planning to keep bellinger, Harper, Pete Alonso, rendon, Jose Ramirez and Jacob deGrom. Which three would you keep around from Eugenio Suarez, Ozzie Albies, Max Kepler, Starling Marte, Chris Sale, Trevor Bauer or Corey Kluber? Thanks! (Jon from Warshington ) | It depends on league size and scoring. I also count 6 you plan to keep so not sure there is room for 3 in a keep 8 league. Regardless, I'll give you my top 2 plus a 3rd! (1) Albies, (2) Marte, and (3) Sale. I'd consider Suarez, but you are already keeping two 3B. (Jesse Roche) |
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | 1st three picks in a 15 team keeper league non snake....
I am deciding between...
1...Bellinger, Cole, or deGrom
2...Harper, Starling Marte, Judge
3...Rizzo, Bryant, Kershaw
Any strong avoids? Any strong musts? (Vic from Baltimore) | (1) Bellinger is a must over those arms
(2) Harper is easily my preference, but there is a case for Judge (3) Bryant by far (Jesse Roche) |
2019-10-30 16:00:00 (link to chat) | What do you think the Pirates will do this off-season? Are they moving toward a complete rebuild? (Trixie from San Diego) | I think they have to, right? I hate rec'ing a rebuild but what do you do? Your best or second best position player is Starling Marte, who is 30 and just put together one of his best seasons. Two years left on his contract (via affordable options)...don't you cash in on that? Josh Bell is already 27. He's been in the majors for parts of four seasons. You have to make a decision on him soon, too. Jameson Taillon is out for essentially all of 2020. Your core, should you choose to keep one is Bell/Marte/...Newman? Tucker? Keller? Where do you go from here that makes sense in a highly competitive Central? I think they could do a short rebuild if they marshaled their resources correctly, but it's really hard to say without seeing who is in charge of said resources. It's also hard to believe Nutting won't take any opportunity to spend less money. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-10-23 14:00:00 (link to chat) | What kind of trade return could the Pirates expect for Starling Marte? Could they get multiple top 100 prospects? (Trixie from San Diego) | Yeah I think depending on how good the top prospect is in the deal you can squeeze a second top 100-type in there, and maybe a third flier. He's still really good and his contract isn't a squeeze on anyone. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What would a Felipe Vazquez or Starling Marte return look like for the Pirates? (Jack from Texas) | I think both should fetch a handsome return, and I'm certain Pittsburgh wouldn't move them unless they got something they were happy with, given their years of team control. Maybe either could get a 55 OFP and some lotto tickets? I have a feeling both are below the echelon that could return a 60, but I am often wrong. (Ginny Searle) |
2019-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What are the chances Felipe Vazquez or Starling Marte get traded by the deadline? Would you trade them? What could each fetch in a return? (Jeb from Iowa) | Trying to understand what the Pirates front office is going to do at any given time is a fools errand. They should have put chips in a couple times and didn't. They should have pulled back last year and made one of the worst trades of all time, in all likelihood. I have no idea what they're doing.
I would probably market both for massive returns and see if someone was willing to bite (or come close). I don't think there's a problem holding either and they'll both be tradeable in the future. Marte especially has incredibly cheap options the next two years. If you don't get want you want now, you have options in the offseason. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-06-10 20:00:00 (link to chat) | In my dynasty league, I could use a long-term CF as I'm currently deploying Harper in the 8 spot and next year I can probably deploy Gallo there and Harper back to RF. But with the dearth of LF options, I need Gallo there. Starling Marte is available in my 20-team dynasty (his owner has Trout). I have plenty of young pitching )Ian Anderson, Jesus Luzardo, Alex Reyes, Dustin May, Chris Paddack), and some more seasoned pitching (Gerrit Cole, Max Scherzer). If I offered Luzardo, you think that's a fair offer to fill my OF? (Mike from Milwaukee) | I feel like most Luzardo owners would think this is too rich and most Marte owners would think this isn't rich enough, which means it's probably about right. You can't trust Marte to play in more than 120 games and he's on the wrong side of 30, but Luzardo is a pitcher with arm injuries. Risks abound. (Ben Carsley) |
2019-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm in the Bay, but I'm a Marlins fan. I've been impressed with Harold Ramirez. I looked him up and he was once a top 100 prospect. Somebody told me he has Starling Marte type qualities. What say you? (Keith from Tampa Bay) | Qualities like arms and legs and ability to hold a bat? Sure. They're not in the same stratosphere. Ramirez can hit a little bit and was able to run on the lower minors but doesn't have the type of speed to be an impact in the majors, in my opinion, much less be the threat that Marte is. Ben Carsley covered Ramirez a bit here. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Dynasty, keep forever: if it makes sense for roster construction, you think Jesus Luzardo for Starling Marte makes sense/is fair? (Loria from Milwaukee) | I would be trying to get a non-injured version of Luzardo if I'm the Marte holder. As is I think it is light. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm looking to move Starling Marte & Joey Votto in a keep forever dynasty. I could use pitching. If I target a rotation piece(s), what tier should I be looking at? (AJ from Phoenix) | If you're pairing them together you need an ace back. (Craig Goldstein) |
2018-04-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What are Cole Tucker and Lolo Sanchez's upside? (Jimbo from Utah) | I think Tucker's a good fit for the Pirates. Mercer's going to walk. Tucker, I think, will provide more bat and less glove than Mercer. But given the way the game's evolving--more balls in the air, more shifting of infielders (or at least not *less* shifting), the importance of a really strong glove at short is diminishing. Think Seager and Correa--not that they're slouches, but they're not phenomenal with the glove. They don't have to be! I think Tucker will be a net upgrade.
Sanchez is 18, so my Shane Baz racehorse analogy applies. He's only 18, but so far he's shown good speed and a good glove but nothing exceptional with the bat. Upside would be Starling Marte but I'm guessing he falls short offensively, which will limit him. But he's only 18! He can change! (Rob Mains) |
2017-05-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | The Cubs appear mortal, the Giants and Mets are a mess, so how much more does the Starling Marte suspension hurt from the perspective of Pirates fans? (alcrisafulli from San Diego) | We're still talking about a Wild Card, right? For a team that currently has the tenth-best record in the league, four games behind the second wild card? It hurts from the perspective of having a team that's better, and some of the outfield follies in his absence have been notable. But he was a 7-win player last year. Cut that in half, and assume some ineffectiveness due to rust when he returns, and the team is...what, maybe five games worse because of his suspension? He's not the reason, at this point, that October ball seems unlikely. (Rob Mains) |
2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Buying Matt Harvey? Yasiel Puig or Starling Marte too much? (Shawn from CT) | It seems to be a mechanical, fixable issue but I worry that it will take another 1-3 starts to fix this. Puig is fair, but I'm not the biggest Puig fan. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | As a non analytics guy, I keep reading on Starling Marte and how he consistently miffs BABIP experts. After he cut down on his k's and increased his walks, he had one of the highest 2nd half averages last year. What do you make of him moving forward? (Greg43 from Pittsburgh) | He's great. Like, really, really, good. I picked him as a breakout candidate early last year and he did not disappoint. Eventually, his BABIP will fall back down to earth, but it's not unprecedented for a player to have a multi-year run of good BABIPs like he's having. Moving forward, I think next year he's relatively safe, but like I said, eventually the BABIP will come down. Hopefully by that point he can make up for declining BABIP with increased power. (Rob Arthur) |
2015-01-21 15:00:00 (link to chat) | What do you think of Gerrit Cole this year? Would you move a solid OF like Starling Marte for him in a dynasty league? (Grizzly from Chicago) | Big fan of Cole this year, and I would definitely swing that deal in a dynasty league if it's available. (Doug Thorburn) |
2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Better young outfield now and in the future. Gregory Polanco, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte vs. Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Gincarlo Stanton? (Drew from Rockford, IL) | Pirates now, maybe Marlins next year, Pirates after that. Because are we to assume Stanton stays in Miami? Because with five bazillion trade rumors in the last two years, one of 'em's gotta be true. (Matt Sussman) |
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Which longterm contract with paw print tattoos would you rathe have? Jedd Gyorko or Starling Marte? (Callie Fornya from Vermont) | I didn't love either at the time, but Marte is the guy I'm buying between the two. (Craig Goldstein) |
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat) | Who wins this trade in a dynasty: Jason Heyward & Tyson Ross OR Cole Hamels, Starling Marte, Nick Williams, and Nick Kingham? (Dynasty Trade from Tradeville USA) | I think Ross is poop so give me the second side. Nick Williams might not know left from right field but he can hit. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Are you buying into Starling Marte in dynasty leagues? 20/40 potential? (Evan from California) | I love Marte. 20/40 seems extreme, but it's not in the long run. I wouldn't expect Marte to hit for that type of power in 2014, though. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Starling Marte going to be the Robin to Cutch's Batman? Or should we expect him to come back to earth this year? (Tony from Work) | The pepper to McCutchen's salt, the eggs to his ham, the Ernie to his Bert, the Hardy to his Laurel, the Naked Gun 2 1/2 to his Naked Gun, the (Matthew Kory) |
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Gregory Polanco ultimately become the regular center or rightfielder for the Bucs? (Paul from DC) | Does he or should he? He probably should, and is the best center fielder of him, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte (which is incredibly high praise), but he won't push Cutch out of center anytime soon. That's what winning an MVP will do for you, and Cutch isn't exactly a slouch out there. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Good to here Polanco may be the best fielder of the three in PIT, but where do you come down on his ultimate offensive upside? (Shawn from Lynchburg) | He'll be the dynamic leadoff hitter that Starling Marte isn't patient enough to be. (Jeff Moore) |
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat) | Keeper lge: rank these please: Gregory polanco, Avisail Garcia (Minor league guy from Lake villa, IL ) | In a keeper league, it's Gregory Polanco and it's not particularly close. Polanco has 25-30 SB potential and could wind up being another Starling Marte for the Pirates. Garcia could be an OK power/speed guy, but I have some questions about what if he's ever going to steal enough for the fantasy side of the equation. Definitely Polanco for me. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat) | This was asked to Parks on his chat, but do you prefer Starling Marte or Gregory Polanco (aside from the fact Marte is already in MLB)? (The Dude from Office) | I'll go on the opposite end for this. I prefer Gregory Polanco. I think that Polanco has the potential to be an All-Star Level player. (Zach Mortimer) |
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Drop Starling Marte for Domonic Brown? Too close to call? Or drop Marte for Matt Cerpenter? (Espinosa and Rutledge are my 2B)? Thanks. (Chris from Toronto) | No and no. Don't bail on Marte - he has more upside than any of those guys for fantasy. (Bret Sayre) |
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Starling Marte going to break out this year? I don't see him as a great leadoff hitter, even if he can sustain a .300+ BA (redguy12588 from Pittsburgh) | See my last... he has a ton of ability but controlling the strike zone is not one of them. People talk about guys like Braun and Trout as once-in-a-generation talents, but so was Alfonso Soriano... very few hitters can be impact players with such terrible K-BB numbers. That's not to say Marte can't or won't be an impact player this year, but let's just say I'm not giving up on Alex Presley yet, either! (Cory Schwartz) |
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What exactly is Starling Marte? He could be anywhere from Stubbs to Fowler to Ellsbury, IMO. Thoughts? Thanks for taking my question! (Sean from New Jersey) | I don't expect he'll strike out as much as Stubbs. Fowler is a really interesting one. My first thought was speed won't be much a part of his game, but Fowler's speed stats seem really Coors-driven with the triples but lack of steals in a good hitting park. Put them in the same environment and I guess you could see some similar things. (Zachary Levine) |
2013-03-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Harry,
What are your thoughts on the long term prospects for Starling Marte and Zack Cozart. (dhorrell1956 from Winston-Salem, NC) | solid but not stars (Harry Pavlidis) |
2013-03-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Matt,
Enjoy the chats alot. Who do you consider the best choice in a dynasty league without regard to position. Lance Lynn, Trevor Cahill or Starling Marte. (dhorrell1956 from Winston Salem, NC) | Thanks, I enjoy the questions a lot. I'm really not a fantasy guy, but I do like me some Starling Marte. So take that for what it's worth. Also I'd think in dynasty you'd be concerned with injuries and so I'd suggest staying away from pitching prospects. (Matthew Kory) |
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | As a Pirate fan, do I have any reason to think any of our potential outfielders not named Andrew will be above average major league players? i.e. Snyder, Tabata, Marte? (fgbaloh from Allentown) | fgbaloh, the good news is that those guys are all young. The bad news is... Jose Tabata has teased but seems to have plateaued. Travis Snider is not a bad gamble, but as with Tabata, he looks more like a role player to me. Starling Marte could be something. Scouts love him, PECOTA loves him, I have concerns about his plate discipline. But yeah, there's hope with him. (Geoff Young) |
2013-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on two Pirates corner OF, Starling Marte and Travis Snider? Is this finally the year Snider produces? Can Marte have a productive 20-20 season this year? (MJ from Pittsburgh) | I don't expect much out of Snider. PECOTA says .264 TAv with middling defense, and I don't say otherwise. That's not awful, but it's below-average in an outfield corner. R.J. Anderson wrote about Marte today, so I'd recommend reading what he had to say. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Has Polanco passed Josh Bell as a Pirate prospect and do you think either will have a better career than Starling Marte? (rogero from Philly) | Yes; I think Polanco has passed Bell, but that could change when a healthy Bell gets his traction at the professional level. I doubt either will have a better career than Marte. (Jason Parks) |
2012-10-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Starling Marte, does he have a reasonable shot at being an All Star at some point in his career? (Paul from DC) | Sure, plenty of good-not-great players have strong first halves and make the All-Star Game. I don't expect him to turn into a superstar, but he does a lot of things well. (Bradley Ankrom) |
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Starling Marte, am I crazy to think that he could put up a line similar to McCutchen with more power and a lower OBP? (redguy12588 from Pittsburgh) | Nah, he isn't a star for me, more of a good regular. That said, I do enjoy watching him play and like the idea of he and McCutchen roaming the same outfield for the next few years. (Bradley Ankrom) |
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks (DanDaMan from SeaCliff) | At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty) |
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I have a farm system draft coming up for an NL only league. Is Starling Marte worth the pick? (Jerome from T Hills) | Maybe. Look at this picture of Bill Duke instead: http://www.wearysloth.com/Gallery/ActorsD/4978.gif (Jason Parks) |
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I understand that the significance of spring numbers falls somewhere between very little and balls - but for a minor leaguer, does their approach, on a scouting level, against significantly more advanced pitching mean something? I'm thinking specifically of Starling Marte - who put up good numbers, and also demonstrated his tools in live action against big league pitching. Gotta count for something, right? (Milby from Das Biergarten) | Excellent comment. Yes; anytime a younger, inexperienced player can face an older, more experienced player, the younger player will benefit immensely. That's why scouting ST is so important. You get to see match-ups that don't normally exist, and the information you can extract from those match-ups is invaluable. (Jason Parks) |
2012-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat) | is Starling Marte ready to be a 20-20 guy this season? (Laurie Fine from Syracuse) | This year? no. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Cory.
Could you please rank the following prospects in order:
Anthony Rendon, Josh Bell, Rymer Liriano & Starling Marte. Thanks. (Ed from Cranford, NJ) | Punting this one to local prospect guru Kevin Goldstein. I will say though that I don't think much of Josh Bell as a prospect, while people are already talking about moving Ryan Zimmerman to 1B to make room for Rendon, so that speaks pretty highly of Rendon. (Cory Schwartz) |
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Starling Marte only walked 22 times in 530 AB last year, When you see a guy with a walk rate as low as this, is it a red flag as far as not being able to lay off pitches at the next level, even if the K rate is low? I am curious if this is a sign of a hitter that is not yet mature enough to handle MLB pitching, or just an aggressive approach. (Steve from Huntington Beach) | The approach is obviously the big concern with Marte. For really good hitters like him, it's tough to lay off pitches he actually CAN make contact with. His advancement (or lack thereof) will basically define his ceiling. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In your opinion would you package Starling Marte for a young 1B since it has been such a black hole for the bucs? What kind of player do you think Marte will become? (Seth from PA) | I wouldn't trade Marte for a 1B unless that 1B could hit in the middle of a lineup. I'm very high on Marte. Could end up being a first-division player, although some believe that is optimistic. He's an up-the-middle regular at worst and that has a lot of value. (Jason Parks) |
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who do you like better and why, Starling Marte or Robbie Grossman? (jsdspud from My Desk) | Marte can play a premium defensive position with more skill. Grossman is a Texan and I like that, but he isn't on Marte's level as a prospect. (Jason Parks) |
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Lot's of conflicting reports from prospecting mavens recently on Robbie Grossman (BA Calis vs. Fangraphs and now minorleagueball.com). My gut says Starling Marte is the better prospect, but I have to disagree with BA that it's not particularly close. My gut is wrong?
(marjinwalker from DC) | Grossman is tough guy to wrap your head around. He does a lot of things, but has some real weaknesses, and has a weird profile as a corner outfielder. I do like him, however, and I think it's close. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Starling Marte -- a future All Star? (Steve from Pittsburgh) | I like him, but not THAT much. (Kevin Goldstein) |
