Once the World Series ends, I'm headed to Surprise to check in on Zimmer, Dozier, Starling and the rest of the prospect gang.
But, basically, the story on Zimmer hasn't changed much since he injured his lat muscle in May. The club still feels he can contribute in 2015, and they hope he could join the rotation midseason. But the next season he completes in healthy fashion will be the first. His talent is immense. His brittleness is frustrating for the organization - and, of course, for Zimmer himself. He's a bright guy, a hard worker and in the words of more than one KC official "a clean liver*." So his inability to stay on the field is tough for everyone involved. *The noun here refers not to the organ, but the noun form of the verb "to live." The implication is basically the same, though. The Blue Jays, Braves, Angels, Royals, Giants, and even a team like the Orioles could come calling. I'm not the best at putting together potential trade packages, but I have to imagine any package will center around a pitching prospect that's relatively close to the majors -- which is why I largely think the Angels have no shot to acquire either Samardzija or David Price. I literally have no idea what they could offer that anyone would care about.

The key to Zimmer's success is maintaining his signature pattern of big momentum to realize the functional advantages as well as to line up the timing of his delivery. Last year he struggled out of the gate with a slower pace that threw a wrench into his kinetic chain. I think the FB is more hittable than your average power arm, and I'm not sold on the CH yet. But his breaking ball can break a lot of hearts at the plate, so he should be able to miss a lot of bats. Do you have any thoughts on his maturity level ? (AL from Amarillo, TX) | I don't, but I will say this, which is extremely, extremely important in assessing players: Makeup and character are not the same thing. They're not even necessarily correlated, though they might be. Makeup, as it is usually used, and as it might be useful to somebody assessing these guys, generally means: The mental drive to make himself better; the steadiness to perform well in any situation, not just comfortable ones; and whatever characteristics might make those around him better. Character is totally different. Lots of guys you'd hate IRL who would grade out as having good makeup, for baseball purposes.
The problem is, you have a decent insight into people's character by seeing how they act in public, the words they use when they speak, etc. The makeup stuff isn't generally readily apparent to us. So, yeah, I wouldn't make any decisions about players based on their interviews. Notably, I didn't draft Miguel Cabrera anywhere before 2012 because of his DUI/rehab. See? (Sam Miller) |

Now playing: Elephant by Warpaint (Jim H from Sphinx Park, CO) | Deception can be a double-edged sword. As you note, any blatant alteration to mechanics can often have a negative ripple effect on consistency or function. In fact, many pitchers have been mechanically ruined (IMO) because of blatant manipulations in the name of deception - from closed strides to excessive spine-tilt in the name of creating more downhill plane.
I think the best way to safely add deception is to ramp up momentum and get a longer stride, in addition to solid posture, which combine to extend distance at release point. The net effect is an increase of perceived velocity to the hitter, and break/movement that occurs closer to the plate. Thing is, Zimmer already has plus momentum which is a key part of his delivery - he is at his best when the momentum is humming along. I gave him a peak momentum grade of 65 in this article. Glad to see my suspicious being confirmed that he was better than he showed in High-A. It's a pure ceiling of a no. 2 starter, but I'd probably back up to more of a likely no. 3 future because the fastball does seem to be a little visible to hitters. Despite the elite velocity, guys tend to put decent wood on it a little too often. The curveball is near wipeout though, and his slider and change are both usable secondaries. Definite big league starting pitcher to me with a good delivery, solid command/control profile, and very good stuff. Should reach the majors at some point in 2014. (Jason Cole) |

Its a very easy, simple delivery; the arm works very well; the fastball pops in the 92-95 range with comfort; can touch higher; the CH is a major league quality pitch; could end up a 7 on the 2/8; great arm speed on the pitch; good deception and late action; curveball is okay; can show depth at 75-78; slider might make a case; good command profile. I preferred Zimmer on draft day due to his superior delivery - excellent momentum combined with great balance and stability throughout the delivery, a combination that is rarely seen at the amateur level. I actually liked Gausman's delivery better in high school than with LSU, as he was stiff with his delivery in college and finished with vicious spine tilt. But I was stunned by Gausman's improvements this spring, as he had addressed all of the issues in minimal time. Gausman has the higher ceiling, and now that I have seen such rapid development patterns, he gets my vote for the superior prospect. Gausman could be special. (Doug Thorburn) |

(cal guy from cal) | We are fortunate to be witnessing a renaissance of young talent on the mound. I typically have many reservations about the mechanics of young pitchers, but the mechanical profile of every pitcher that you mentioned is incredibly advanced for his age. There are a couple of risky guys out there - Tyler Skaggs stands out as an inefficient pitcher - but the majority of the other top prospects are well ahead of the standard development curve. I haven't been able to say that for years, but beyond the five that you mentioned, I have also been impressed by Shelby Miller and Kyle Zimmer, among others.
My pet player is Jose (J.O.) Berrios. He had the best mechanics in the 2012 draft, in my opinion, and the #32 overall pick exemplifies the change of approach that we are seeing in Minnesota. That said, his limited track record and uneven showings at time in the spring are flags for me, so I would look closely as to how he handles a full pro season workload throwing every fifth day. (Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX) | It is impossible to know for sure why each of the eight teams selecting before Pittsburgh opted to pass on Appel, though his bonus demands likely played a major role, as did the identity of his agent and the novelty of the current rules governing signing bonuses. It could also be a case of the hype outweighing the potential, as though Appel was certainly a top-tier pitcher in the draft, there was no clear-cut favorite among the arms. I preferred the skills of Kyle Zimmer in a vacuum, and the anticipated difference in bonus demands just increases the ranking spread on a potential zebra sheet. Appel has some decent mechanics, though nothing stands out as elite, and he does have some mechanical inefficiencies that could be cleaned up in time for next year's draft.

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Kyle Zimmer threw 1,781 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2016 and 2022, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2022, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (95mph) and Slider (87mph), also mixing in a Change (87mph) and Curve (77mph).
