2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Been a while since this has been said: the Royals probably don't have any top 100 guys. Next June they'll have a middle-ish first round pick. Assuming no huge trades or anything, will do you think they'll have one going into the 2018 "prospect season"?
(Daniel from CO)
They Royals definitely don't have a top 100 guy, and I'm not sure I see one on the horizon. There best chance for a top 100 guy is to take a high upside guy in the first-round next year, or for Kyle Zimmer to get healthy. The former sounds a lot more realistic than the latter. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)It is encouraging to see Kyle Zimmer at 20 considering his injury history. How high would he be on the list if health wasn't a question?
(Ryan from Kansas City)
Kyle Zimmer was at 89. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)My bad on the Kyle Zimmer at 20 comment. I was looking at multiple top 100 and he was 20 on another list.
(Ryan from Kansas City)
No problemo. Too many Zimmers. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-02-03 20:00:00 (link to chat)Has Kyle Zimmer lost any luster? Does he still have top of the rotation upside?
(Erik from Houston)
Sure, any time a prospect struggles to stay healthy as much as Zimmer has, some the shine comes off. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say top of the rotation upside at this point, but I do think there is still plenty of promise. (Greg Wellemeyer)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hey George! What are your thoughts on Kyle Zimmer heading into the 2016 season? Is he someone who can reach his potential or do you think injuries have stopped that train?
(Jack from Philly)
Let's see him stay healthy and build up his innings before we start looking too far ahead. Making it to the Majors would be a best case scenario for him at this point after all of the injury problems he's had. (George Bissell)
2015-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer or Bradley Zimmer?
(John from CT)
Good question. I probably go with Zimmer.

Sorry, that was too easy and fun. I would say Bradley is the MUCH safer option, but when Kyle was healthy he was 7-7-6, and there aren't too many guys who are 7-7-6. I just don't think we ever see that version again. I hope I'm wrong, I really do. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-05-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Kyle Zimmer have the best power/speed/OBP combo below AA?
(Eric from Atlanta)
Kyle had electric stuff before the injury. Bradley might have one of the best ones. I really like him at the plate. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Ben, who do have as some of your favorite "to keep an eye on" prospects for 2015?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
This is all over the place, but some guys who's values could fluctuate wildly from a fantasy POV for me are: Trey Ball, Chelsor Cuthbert, Casey Kelly, Tyler Austin, Tyrell Jenkins, Colin Moran, Kyle Crick, Matt Olson, Kyle Zimmer, Rymer Liriano, Gary Sanchez and Alen Hanson. All over the place, I know, but I feel like a lot of those guys are gonna go one of two ways. (Ben Carsley)
2014-10-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer has another shoulder soreness issue. Seemingly has the skills but are we at the point where 2016 is a more reasonable timeline to see the bump in Kauffman given the lack of work?
(ted from Chicago)
There are so many variables here, from mechanics to conditioning and workloads, but the mounting injuries are certainly a concern that could delay his arrival in KC. He has gone through some major inconsistencies with his momentum, and Zimmer tends to perform much better when he gets a big burst toward the plate, but he will need to find consistency if he is to maximize his performance and minimize his injury risk. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)How is Kyle Zimmer doing ;)
(ssimon from Pelham, N.Y.)
He's been lighting things up in the Arizona Fall League, based on the scouts I've talked to and based on stuff that guys like Keith Law are writing. Once the World Series ends, I'm headed to Surprise to check in on Zimmer, Dozier, Starling and the rest of the prospect gang.

But, basically, the story on Zimmer hasn't changed much since he injured his lat muscle in May. The club still feels he can contribute in 2015, and they hope he could join the rotation midseason. But the next season he completes in healthy fashion will be the first. His talent is immense. His brittleness is frustrating for the organization - and, of course, for Zimmer himself. He's a bright guy, a hard worker and in the words of more than one KC official "a clean liver*." So his inability to stay on the field is tough for everyone involved.

*The noun here refers not to the organ, but the noun form of the verb "to live." The implication is basically the same, though.

Also, stop trolling. Now is not the time. (Andy McCullough)
2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat)Which minor league players are most likely to start in the American League in 2015 that are either flying under the radar or have not been brought up. Thanks!
(Cinco bros from AZ)
For players who haven't come up yet, how about Rusney Castillo, Francisco Lindor, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Miguel Sano and Kyle Zimmer. For guys who are just under the radar, let's go with Nick Franklin, Mike Foltynewicz, Dylan Bundy, Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Norris and Oswaldo Arcia. (Ben Carsley)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)When can we all just admit Kyle Zimmer is broken?
(Dayton from the beach)
I don't think anyone is arguing otherwise. The question is whether he can get healthy again, and I think he can. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like more over next few years Kyle Zimmer or Tyler Glasnow?
(Matt from MN)
Glasnow (Sam Miller)
2014-07-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like more over next few years Kyle Zimmer or Tyler Glasnow?
(scifi451 from MN)
Zimmer. Wait, no. Glasnow. Glasnow. (Sam Miller)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Did I not see Kyle Zimmer on the list? It's not like he had TJ surgery.
(Luc from Atlanta)
No; he just missed the season with a shoulder injury, which is scarier. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)How strong is the Royals crop of young arms including Kyle Zimmer, Miguel Almonte, Jason Adam, Christian Binford, Sam Selman, and new acquisitions Brandon Finnegan and Foster Griffin? BTW, what can you tell me about Selman as he doesn't seem to get as much press as the others? Cheers
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
it's very strong. I really like Almonte and believe Adam will continue to progress. I like Finnegan quite a bit too. if Zimmer could prove healthy, then the crop would be even stronger. Given the control problems, I am not convinced Selman is a starter long term, and that's the biggest reason you don't hear more about him nationally. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)This is basically a lost season for Kyle Zimmer. Should the Royals just shut him down and have him hit the ground running next year?
(Ryan from Montreal)
If he's not going to actually do any harm to his arm, then I could understand them wanting him to get some innings in. If there are any lingering questions about his healthy, then just wait until next year. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer was supposed to "resume" throwing (as though he'd actually started at some point) yesterday. Beyond velo, how can us mere mortals figure out whether he's really broken?
(teddy from chicago)
Just try to stay on top of the news via the various outlets (BP, Twitter, etc...) Short of actually seeing him, you have to rely on the news from those who are seeing him. (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer going to miss the top 50 cut because of the injury?
(Matt from NJ)
I don't know if that's the only reason why, but he's not in there. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)What team do you think is most likely to go after Samardzija and what would a package for him look like?
(CarolinaCubbie from Greensboro)
Samardzija is going to be an attractive asset on the trade market. The Blue Jays, Braves, Angels, Royals, Giants, and even a team like the Orioles could come calling. I'm not the best at putting together potential trade packages, but I have to imagine any package will center around a pitching prospect that's relatively close to the majors -- which is why I largely think the Angels have no shot to acquire either Samardzija or David Price. I literally have no idea what they could offer that anyone would care about.

If the Royals are willing to part with Kyle Zimmer, they'll have a chance to acquire Price/Samardzija, depending on the remainder of the package. (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)KLaw seems to think the Indians take BPA all the way, and I agree. Who are a couple of guys expected to go top 12-15 who could fall a bit on draft day to the Tribe?
(username49 from Ohio)
Tough question because the talent is tightly packed in that range. Michael Chavis, Sean Reid-Foley, and Kyle Schwarber seem to be good fits. Ti'Quan Forbes, Monte Harrison, Kyle Zimmer, too. (Pre-Draft Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I just pushed the panic button on Kyle Zimmer and shipped him away as a part of deal to land Alex Cobb. Are you as worried as I am? He is set to miss close to a full year with shoulder problems. And shoulder problems are scary
(Matt from Cambridge)
I don't think that's a panic button if you got Cobb in the deal. I'm always worried about young arms even before they get injured because they are just SO uncertain, but throwing in injury concern really pushes me away. I'm often looking to deal young arms in my leagues for established pieces unless they are on the cusp of coming up and contributing. But I'm always trading the Giolitos of the world for in-season contributions (Paul Sporer)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Another setback for Kyle Zimmer has me worried about his future, especially since he had shoulder issues last season. What are your thoughts on his short- and long-term future?
(Frank from Kansas City)
Shoulders are fickle. My shoulder ended my personal career, and I know how much it sucks to have stiffness or problems in your throwing arm. Those issues aside, however, Zimmer profiles as a number three type starter. The CB is legit; it's a plus, plus offering. Like plenty of young pitchers, it's going to come down to the change up. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts about KC's keeping Kyle Zimmer under wraps in extended spring until late May, when he'll make his season debut at AA? The org's stated goal is to use him in the majors late in the season.
(Bill from Bozeman)
It really depends on their reasons for holding him back. The key to Zimmer's success is maintaining his signature pattern of big momentum to realize the functional advantages as well as to line up the timing of his delivery. Last year he struggled out of the gate with a slower pace that threw a wrench into his kinetic chain. I don't know whether that was due to his physical form or a coaching adjustment from the org, but the hope is that he is establishing that trademark momentum and timing. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's Kyle Zimmer 2014 look like? Is this one of those "the guy isn't hurt" injuries where Dr. Andrews gleefully guts him in three months?
(brentdaily from boulder)
I haven't seen him unfortunately. I was hoping for a 2014 impact, but that's derailed currently. Honestly, it's just the nature of prospects and pitching prospects specifically. (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Scoresheet league.Just traded Kyle Zimmer for Henry Owens and Tommy La Stella. Was somewhat concerned with Zimmer's various ailments although reports greatly vary. How concerned are you and where do you see Owens and La Stella down the road ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
That's not a bad deal, especially if you're looking to get out from under the potential troubles of Zimm. (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer .What's the scoop on him .Is he really injured or is it just a delayed season as a matter of precaution ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
I've been led to believe that there is a legitimate injury behind all of this, but the severity has been reported to varying degrees when I've spoken with different people. I think the current aim is to rehab him and bring him back strong, but who knows how that will play out. (Mark Anderson)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Kyle Zimmer's shoulder issues? He hasn't started throwing yet. Are the Royals just saving him so he can pitch in KC?
(ttt from Manhattan)
I didn't see him throw in camp, although I did see him in uniform. Shoulder injuries make me nervous, even when I'm told everything is okay. (Jason Parks)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Glasnow or Kyle Zimmer for dynasty? Why?
(Joel from Austin)
Zimmer for me. Both have big upside, so I take the closer guy because I want contributions ASAP in fantasy. (Paul Sporer)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everything I read suggests it best to be patient on Gausman. I have the opportunity to acquire him and Matt Harvey in a deal for Wil Myers and a 1st round pick in minor league draft. Thumbs up? For context, I am not really trying to win this year and I have Buxton, Polanco, Dahl, Soler coming up the ranks but Kyle Zimmer is my only arm I can dream on.
(aaronayoung from DC)
I guess if you're looking for the future, then go ahead. I don't like giving up seasons, but if it's already set that you're unlikely to compete in 2014, then you might as well build up 2015 & beyond (Paul Sporer)
2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some minor league arms with fastballs too good to ignore...like Robert Stephenson?
(Chris from Baltimore)
Jonathan Gray, Yordano Ventura, Lucas Giolito, Noah Syndergaard, Alex Meyer ... I am big on Kyle Zimmer's fastball, which only loses deception when he ratchets down the momentum in his delivery, resulting in lesser depth at release point and poor command. It's an 8 when he lines up the gears. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Kyle Zimmer have a what it takes to be this years Michael Wacha?
(Biscuits from San Jose State)
Perhaps. I like Zimmer. I think the FB is more hittable than your average power arm, and I'm not sold on the CH yet. But his breaking ball can break a lot of hearts at the plate, so he should be able to miss a lot of bats. Unlike most power arms, he is going to need sharper command to survive because the pitch is true and hitters seems to pick it up early. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Sam, I saw an interview Kevin Gausman gave before the draft and he sounded like a 5 year old and immediately downgraded him and took Kyle Zimmer in my draft. Do you have any thoughts on his maturity level ?
(AL from Amarillo, TX)
I don't, but I will say this, which is extremely, extremely important in assessing players: Makeup and character are not the same thing. They're not even necessarily correlated, though they might be. Makeup, as it is usually used, and as it might be useful to somebody assessing these guys, generally means: The mental drive to make himself better; the steadiness to perform well in any situation, not just comfortable ones; and whatever characteristics might make those around him better. Character is totally different. Lots of guys you'd hate IRL who would grade out as having good makeup, for baseball purposes.

The problem is, you have a decent insight into people's character by seeing how they act in public, the words they use when they speak, etc. The makeup stuff isn't generally readily apparent to us.

So, yeah, I wouldn't make any decisions about players based on their interviews. Notably, I didn't draft Miguel Cabrera anywhere before 2012 because of his DUI/rehab. See? (Sam Miller)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Im in a dynasty league, pitching flush, and own too many of my yanks. Looking to move CC on to new pastures, what type of prospect should I be hoping to get? Kyle Zimmer type range?
(Joe from Girardi)
Hi Joe:

I think CC Sabathia could bounce back a little bit this year but if you've decided you're sick and tired of him, then Zimmer is certainly a worthy target if you can get him. (Mike Gianella)

2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jeff - A lot of pitching prospects have been throw around in this chat. Curious where Kyle Zimmer ranks; thinking in terms of tiers, who is his peer set - the guys you would cluster around him? What is his ceiling like down the road?

He's in the Jameson Taillon, Andrew Heaney, Aaron Sanchez, Alex Meyer class. It's a good spot to be in. (Jeff Moore)

Appel should be in the Astros rotation from day one. Zimmer has a good chance to spend half of that season in the big leagues. Giolito may not be there yet. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Doug. Today's write-up on the Royals says that Kyle Zimmer offers little in the way of deception. Are there ways to improve deception, or is that generally avoided since it would open the whole changing mechanics can of worms? TIA Now playing: Elephant by Warpaint
(Jim H from Sphinx Park, CO)
Deception can be a double-edged sword. As you note, any blatant alteration to mechanics can often have a negative ripple effect on consistency or function. In fact, many pitchers have been mechanically ruined (IMO) because of blatant manipulations in the name of deception - from closed strides to excessive spine-tilt in the name of creating more downhill plane.

I think the best way to safely add deception is to ramp up momentum and get a longer stride, in addition to solid posture, which combine to extend distance at release point. The net effect is an increase of perceived velocity to the hitter, and break/movement that occurs closer to the plate. Thing is, Zimmer already has plus momentum which is a key part of his delivery - he is at his best when the momentum is humming along. I gave him a peak momentum grade of 65 in this article.

And bonus points for letting us in on your jukebox! (Doug Thorburn)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the ceilings are for Danny Salazar, Kyle Zimmer and kevin Gausman, and which do you think is more likely to reach it?
(Brian from Mass)
Salazar and Zimmer are #2 starters for me. Gausman has a chance to be a #1 guy. I'm about as big a fan of Gausman as you're going to find and I think he can get to his ceiling with innings and some continued work on his command. (Mark Anderson)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Kyle Zimmer? Could we see him in the Royals rotation in 2014?
(Steve from Chicago)
Saw him a few times in spring training and liked him a lot. Glad to see my suspicious being confirmed that he was better than he showed in High-A. It's a pure ceiling of a no. 2 starter, but I'd probably back up to more of a likely no. 3 future because the fastball does seem to be a little visible to hitters. Despite the elite velocity, guys tend to put decent wood on it a little too often. The curveball is near wipeout though, and his slider and change are both usable secondaries. Definite big league starting pitcher to me with a good delivery, solid command/control profile, and very good stuff. Should reach the majors at some point in 2014. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Kyle Zimmer? Do you think he can be in the Royal's rotation as soon as next year?
(sjdigio from Chicago)
Kyle Zimmer turned the light switch on like few prospects I've seen. I wrote Zimmer up as a potential number 2 starer, and I believe he can contribute in Kansas City next year. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin Gausman or Kyle Zimmer, who has the better carer?
(Jonah from Redwood,CA)
Gausman. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Complete this SAT-type analogy: Archie Bradley is to Corey Feldman as Kyle Zimmer is to...?
(richardkr34 from Saint Paul, MN)
A kid that was once thought to be Corey Haim that turned out to be a sibling of Nick Lachey. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've been hearing renewed buzz about Chris Dwyer as well as Miguel Almonte. Is there legit help for the Royals pitching staff in the system past Kyle Zimmer? BTW, just read Eyewitness Accounts = GREAT STUFF. THANKS!
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
I might like Almonte more than any other arm in the Royals system, and I've been beating that drum since last fall when he stole my soul during instructs. Its a very easy, simple delivery; the arm works very well; the fastball pops in the 92-95 range with comfort; can touch higher; the CH is a major league quality pitch; could end up a 7 on the 2/8; great arm speed on the pitch; good deception and late action; curveball is okay; can show depth at 75-78; slider might make a case; good command profile. I like him. I think he has a shot at developing into a 2/3 type like Zimmer. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)A question that will probably be debated for years, but who do you prefer between Kevin Gausman and Kyle Zimmer? Why?
(D. Loria from Last Place)
A great question. I preferred Zimmer on draft day due to his superior delivery - excellent momentum combined with great balance and stability throughout the delivery, a combination that is rarely seen at the amateur level. I actually liked Gausman's delivery better in high school than with LSU, as he was stiff with his delivery in college and finished with vicious spine tilt. But I was stunned by Gausman's improvements this spring, as he had addressed all of the issues in minimal time. Gausman has the higher ceiling, and now that I have seen such rapid development patterns, he gets my vote for the superior prospect. Gausman could be special. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty league trade, my lineup: Arencibia, Frazier(1b), Espinosa(2b), Miggy(3b), Rutledge(SS), Cuddyer(OF), Melky(OF), Marte(OF), De Aza(OF), Moustakas(DH), Samardzija(SP), Lester(SP), Morrow(SP), Volquez(SP), Bauer(SP). I am looking to acquire a #1SP and this trade has been proposed to me: Felix Hernandez, Wil Myers and Billy Hamilton. Should I stand pat??? I also have Profar, Olt, Taveras and Zunino along with Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Chris Archer and Kyle Zimmer waiting on the bench. Pull the trigger....I an torn.
(MerleDixon from Fantasy prison)
So you give those two for Felix? It's completely fair and fits your desires for a #1. Try to give one of the SP prospects instead of Hamilton, but if s/he says no, then I'd do the proposed deal. (Paul Sporer)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Enjoying SP Guide--great material. 5x5 ten team dynasty: 15 keeper and 10 minors. Spent couple years prospecting: who are the gold nuggets and who are the fool's gold? Jose Fernandez, Jameson Taillon, Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Kyle Zimmer, Max Fried, Lucas Giolito. Thank you
(nictaclacta from phoenix)
You've got lots of potential gold. If I **knew** who was fool's gold out of that, I'd have a much different job. I can tell you who I love from that group and it's Fernandez. I've always been a Taillon guy. Very excited to see full seasons out of Gausman and Zimmer. Btw, no mention of Bundy isn't because of any dislike, but rather bc he speaks for himself. He looks like a future star. (Paul Sporer)
2013-03-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any of the top pitching prospects a future injury risks, specifically Walker, Cole, Fernandez, Wheeler and Bundy?
(cal guy from cal)
We are fortunate to be witnessing a renaissance of young talent on the mound. I typically have many reservations about the mechanics of young pitchers, but the mechanical profile of every pitcher that you mentioned is incredibly advanced for his age. There are a couple of risky guys out there - Tyler Skaggs stands out as an inefficient pitcher - but the majority of the other top prospects are well ahead of the standard development curve. I haven't been able to say that for years, but beyond the five that you mentioned, I have also been impressed by Shelby Miller and Kyle Zimmer, among others.

My pet player is Jose (J.O.) Berrios. He had the best mechanics in the 2012 draft, in my opinion, and the #32 overall pick exemplifies the change of approach that we are seeing in Minnesota. I am very high on his future, and would buy Berrios stock if he were a publicly-traded commodity.

2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Zimmer or Kevin Gausman in a dynasty league?
(Jake from Chicago)
I prefer Kevin Gausman, echoing our prospect team's opinion from the top 101 list, where Gausman ranked 13th and Zimmer 41st. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)For you, who is the better prospect between Kyle Zimmer and Kevin Gausman and what for you separates them?
(Paul from Bored at Work)
Give me Gausman. I think the stuff is a little better. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mr.Levine,can you put thes guys in order??Jose Fernandez...Salvador Perez...Albert Almora..Jorge Solar...Kyle Zimmer...Noah Syndergaaud...Allen Webster...Alen Hanson...Gregory Palanco..Aaron Sanchez...Andrew Heaney...Kevin Gausman..Addison Russell....Kyle Crick...Sean Manaea...Clint Frazier...Ryne Stanek... Thanks John
(John from Boston)
I sort of feel like this is a riddle to see if I can figure out what this list even is. What is this list? I'll go with Salvador (Sal(vy)) Perez and then the rest just for the present. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your assessment of Kevin Gausman, Max Fried, and Kyle Zimmer? Who has the most upside? Thanks.
(Jacob from San Diego)
Jacob, I haven't seen any of the pitchers in person so I'm going off second-hand info here. I've heard a ton of good things about Fried, but it wouldn't surprise me if, in five years, either Zimmer or Gausman is viewed as the best pitcher of the trio. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Kyle Zimmer? How does h compare to last year's crop of top arms?
(Shaun from Denver, CO)
I liked Zimmer when I saw him out in San Francisco. The biggest pluses for me is the fact that he 1) is athletic, 2) has progressed a long ways in a short amount of time on the mound, and 3) has a fresh arm (even with the post-draft procedure). That said, his limited track record and uneven showings at time in the spring are flags for me, so I would look closely as to how he handles a full pro season workload throwing every fifth day. If he can maintain his stuff, he'll be a good one. I had him Behind Gausman and Appel last year. (Nick Faleris)
2012-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which of the top arms in last year's draft do you feel will experience the most success at the big league level? Max Fried, Kevin Gausman, or Kyle Zimmer? Thanks for the chat!
(Bill from San Diego)
Bill, nobody can know! There is no value added in my opinion. I am sorry to give such a lousy answer to this question, but there is absolutely no information that is publicly available that could ever answer this question in a satisfactory way, and even the very smartest people can't predict much. Brandon Beachy wasn't drafted. (Sam Miller)
2012-09-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)How big of a role did Mark Appel's mechanics play in his falling as far as he did in the draft? Anything major he needs to correct?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
It is impossible to know for sure why each of the eight teams selecting before Pittsburgh opted to pass on Appel, though his bonus demands likely played a major role, as did the identity of his agent and the novelty of the current rules governing signing bonuses. It could also be a case of the hype outweighing the potential, as though Appel was certainly a top-tier pitcher in the draft, there was no clear-cut favorite among the arms. I preferred the skills of Kyle Zimmer in a vacuum, and the anticipated difference in bonus demands just increases the ranking spread on a potential zebra sheet. Appel has some decent mechanics, though nothing stands out as elite, and he does have some mechanical inefficiencies that could be cleaned up in time for next year's draft.
