2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please give me your best 5 dynasty buy-low targets right now!
(Timmuh from Tampa)
I think any top-50 hitter (Yelich, Bellinger, Lindor, Devers, etc.) who is struggling is a solid buy right now. Some owner overreact to small samples, especially in this shortened season where a few bad weeks is killer.

Five particular buy-low targets are Walker Buehler, Shohei Ohtani, Matt Olson, Blake Snell, and Victor Robles.

Players who have not played much due to COVID-related reasons like Cardinals players are solid buys right now.

I also think opt outs (Michael Kopech, Eduardo Rodriguez, David Price, etc.) are solid buys right now if you can stash them. They are out for 2020, but it is not injury-related, and they are taking value hits similar to injured players. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a major league comp out there for a pitcher like Asa Lacy?
(Big Time Timmy Jim from Let Timmy Smoke!)
Comps are dangerous, but maybe Blake Snell as a 6-foot-4 LHP with four pitches, three potential plus, and shaky command. (Jesse Roche)
2019-06-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Was looking into trading for Blake Snell in my scoresheet league before he hit the skids. Is he broken?
(sportsguy21792 from madison)
Nope, he's probably fine. Something was floating around on Twitter today, forgive me for not crediting - almost every one of his peripherals is better or at least comparable to last season, save for a .357 BABIP and below average strand rate.

He's got a 3.48 DRA and is striking out basically everyone still. I'm buying, if anything. But at least if you're selling, don't do it at a discount. (Mark Barry)
2019-05-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)In the fourth year of my longest running dynasty league, where my peak achievement has been third in points three weeks into the season, I'm about to tank again. So I want to ask about my second dynasty league. This week, I traded Blake Snell for Nolan Gorman and Luis Robert. My goal is to compete by 2027. Do you think this trade was good?
(Elton from Pacific Northwest)
Elton, my man, we gotta talk about your timeline here. We're gonna have to make it the BP Fantasy Team's mission to get you competing before 2027. Unfortunately, I think your return was a bit light on Snell -- unless, that is, you're ALL IN on Robert. I think you would've been better off building a trade around a higher-end prospect, or grabbing more guys than just Gorman and Robert. Depending on your situation, quantity may matter. (J.P. Breen)
2018-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you know if DRC+ was created just as a means to new content? You know. For the clicks.
(Henry Hucklebuck from Honolulu)
Well, you don't expect me to say "yes," do you, Henry? But having been involved with the testing, I can tell you that we saw an opportunity to move offensive stats forward by incorporating factors that other metrics don't use, like opposing pitcher and defense quality, batted ball quality, more sophisticated park factors, and the like. wRC+ and OPS+ are great metrics that moved offensive analysis forward, but they're outcomes-oriented. If Dee Gordon beats out a dribbler up the third base line off Chris Tillman, and Joey Gallo hits a rocket off Blake Snell that Kiermaier chases down, Gordon wins and Gallo loses. We think there's more to it than that. And, as Jonathan Judge showed, DRC+ is both more descriptive and more predictive than other metrics. (Rob Mains)
2018-12-12 17:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Mike, Any reservations about drafting Blake Snell as the ace of your staff or do you think he's a safe pick despite the limited track record?
(Rick from Tampa)
I'm a little wary of innings/pitch count but not of stuff. You can take him easily as a Top 10 starter. (Mike Gianella)
2018-07-30 23:00:00 (link to chat)Wilson, help a brotha out. Forever keeper, 5x5 roto, who wins: Chris Sale for Madison Bumgarner and Blake Snell? Thanks in advance!
(DJosephD from Cranberry )
I love Snell, I don't expect the Rays to push him this year, I'm terrified of Bumgrarner and don't own him anywere. Chris Sale is...King of the Netherlands. He's a cold beer on a hot day. He is Vigo. He's your guy. (Wilson Karaman)
2018-06-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a 20 team keep forever dynasty league: Juan Soto for Jake Snell and Jesus Luzardo. Currently have rights to the following outfielders Yelich, Schwarber, Acuna, Soto, Buxton, Robles, Adell, and L. Robert.
(beringstorm from Tacoma, WA)
I am a huge fan of Soto, and some of the BP staff wrote at the beginning of the season that they could see him jumping to the very top of a 2019 prospect list. Well, he is in the bigs now, and I am still very high on him. I realize you're dealing from depth in outfield, but I have a hard time moving him right now. Luzardo has nice upside, sure. I’m not familiar with a Jake Snell. Do you mean Blake Snell? It seems you need pitching help, and Snell seems capable of doing that. But I still don't love his walks (4.9 BB/9 in June). I would probably want a better established SP, if possible. (Kevin Jebens)
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)I dealt Blake Snell for Aaron Judge and I'm starting to have buyers remorse. Make me feel better.
(Kevin Kelsey from Frito Lay)
You did fine. Generally want the stability of the bat (granted without knowing the vagaries of your league), and Judge is an elite offensive dude. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-10-24 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey there, Matt -- during your research and writing for the Annual this year, what's your favorite fun fact you've discovered that you'd like to share?
(Not Bryan from Not In This Chat)
Something I learned about Blake Snell:

Only one starting LHP has a higher average perceived velocity on his four-seamer than Snell, and only one has a higher average spin rate. The guy who throws harder is James Paxton and the guy with more spin is Rich Hill. Snell is going to be good eventually. -MT (World Series Chat)
2017-07-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to give up on two of these SP in a dynasty league full keeper who would it be, Vargas, Musgrove, Clevinger, Daniel Norris, Luke Weaver, Patrick Corbin or Blake Snell?
(MatternK from Point Mugu)
When you say "give up on" do you mean trade or release? Vargas and Clevinger both appear to be pitching above their talent level and peripherals, so if you can trade them they seem like good picks. If it's straight up "abandon in a roster crunch" I think I'd drop Corbin and then one of either Musgrove or Clevinger. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-04-28 13:30:00 (link to chat)What is Blake Snell? He's been changing his delivery batter to batter at times this season.
(grimoren189 from Houston)
I've always been a Snell guy but I'm worried about the peripherals right now, obviously. He needs to be able to find the plate more consistently because he's asking to get lit up as it is. (Craig Goldstein)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Rank the following for 2017 and beyond: Blake Snell, Robert Gsellman, Jameson Taillon.
(Tim from CA)
Taillon quietly had a very good season at two levels, and I wouldn't be shocked this year if he takes a step forward and is at least a major league 2 (with the usual health caveats, and there's more there than with the other two). Past him I like both Snell and Gsellman, would take Gsellman today, maybe Snell tomorrow. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)While no longer eligible for the top 101, what do you see from Blake Snell this year and going forward?
(Ron from FLA)
I think he's due for a bit of a consolidation year, gets the walks a bit more under control, is a solid mid-rotation arm. Maybe a bit more in the future. I like him quite a bit. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-01-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for evening hours I work days so its nice to see you on at night quick question how world you rank these four pitcher if you were in a dynasty league. which two would you keep. Kevin Gausman, Blake Snell, Kenta Maeda, Daniel Norris,
(OB1 from Tampa)
In that order, actually. Although I have Gausman, Snell, and Maeda all clustered together in the mid to late 40s. I'd go Gausman and Snell, with their youth as the tie-breaker. (Mark Barry)
2016-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)Why is Blake Snell still in the minors?
(seddrah from Seattle)
The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-05-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a farm system that has as much depth and upside for pitchers than the Pirates? With Glasnow, Taillon, Kingham, Keller, Kuhl, Brault, Eppler, all are dominating or have legitimate shots to be main stays in a rotation.
(detlef schrempf from Zimbabwe)
So many Pirates questions!
The one org that you could consider is Tampa Bay. Blake Snell, Brent Honeywell, Taylor Guerrieri, Jacob Faria and co. are nothing to sneeze at. Love Pittsburgh's young arms though, they're pretty damn good. (Nicolas Stellini)
2016-05-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Got offered Archer and Blake Snell for Ozuna and Liriano 12 team keeper, thoughts?
(Lil B from DC)
I'm somewhat worried about Archer but Liriano hasn't been steady either. I'd likely hold off because I think Ozuna is legit. (Mike Gianella)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank: Giolito, Urias, Snell, Manaea, A. Espinoza. Who will be up first? Thanks.
(CJ from OAK)
For just this year I'd go Lucas Giolito, Blake Snell, Julio Urias, Manaea and Espinoza. My guess is Snell is up first. (Mike Gianella)
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank the following pitching prospects: Anderson Espinoza, Francis Martes, Blake Snell, and Jose De Leon?
(Jeff from NY)
Snell, Martes, De Leon, Espinoza (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Blake Snell came out of nowhere last year to fly through the minor league system. In first appearance of spring he got lit up. Any concern that he's not legitimate and is more of back of rotation guy than front of the rotation?
(Viktor from MD)
Definitely not concerned based on a Spring Training start. Stuff has always been impressive (though it did take a step up in 2015, no question) but it's his ability to throw that stuff for strikes that made the jump. He's legit. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the most real deal Holyfield: Alex Reyes, Tyler Glasnow, or Blake Snell?
(nubber from tx)
Before seeing him this fall, I would have put Reyes behind Glasnow. I kinda/sorta fell in love in the AFL though. I go Reyes, Glasnow, Snell. Man oh man are all three good, though. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Blake Snell reminds me of the hype around Daniel Norris last year. How would you compare the two?
(Jim from Lakeland)
Interesting comparison based on hype alone, and I can understand it. Lefties who arrived quickly and with authority, with full arsenals but questions on command. I have Snell with a slightly higher ceiling, overall but am a big fan of both profiles. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-27 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Matt,Please put in order...Orlando Arcia..A J Reed....Jose Deleon...Blake Snell.. Thanks,Harry
(Harry from New York)
They're are really close together, so you can't really go wrong. I'd go Arcia, Reed, Snell, De Leon (Matt Collins)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hi George,please ranks these minors guy...Olando Arcia...Blake Snell...A.J. reed...Jose Deleon...Brett Phillips and Barreto.... Thank you,Harry
(Harry from New York)
For fantasy purposes, I'd go Reed, Arcia (HUGE GAP) DeLeon, Snell, Barreto, Phillips...Reed is going to be an absolute monster. (George Bissell)
2015-12-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Of the hyped pitching prospects of Anderson Espinoza, Jose de Leon, Francis Martes, and Blake Snell, how would you rank these guys in obtainable upside?
(Viktor from MD)
Very good question. Well, I think we have to list Snell first, because he has the least volatility right now. I'd actually say Espinoza has the most upside of any pitcher on this list, but he's also the least likely to reach it because, well, baseball is hard. I'd go Snell, de Leon, Martes, Espinoza. I love all four. Go get all four. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of ceiling would you put on Blake Snell these days?
(Dave from TB)
I'd say he's got a chance to pitch at or near the top of the rotation. If Fulmer isn't the most improved pitching prospect this year, Snell is. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the better long term investment : Blake Snell or Joe Ross?
(Joe from The Keys)
Ooooh, good one. I would say that Ross is the "safer" long-term investment -- not that Ross doesn't have upside, I just think he's the less volatile prospect. Snell's got the better stuff though, and the command is so much better than it was a year ago. I'd probably go Snell. They're both good. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-08-13 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Greg, Who do you see as potential breakout starting pitchers in the AL for next season?
(Chris from Dallas)
Still riding with Gausman, the Rays will probably slow-play Blake Snell because that's what they do but I saw him the other day and he was sensational. He's pretty close, with three plus pitches. For deeper leagues, I'm interested to see what Matt Boyd does in Detroit. (Greg Wellemeyer)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mike. I know Dynasty leagues is not necessarily your cup of tea but if you feel your squad has a chance to win it this year, would you deal Marcus Stroman, Blake Snell & Nomar Mazara for Cole Hamels?
(JJ from NY)
I think that's too much for Hamels. (Mike Gianella)
2015-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Blake Snell thoughts?
(bob from portland)
Big step forward this year. Command will still get loose, but he's got a legit arsenal. Org source spoke very highly of him when the name came up a couple weeks ago. (Wilson Karaman)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson. Any thoughts on Keury Mella, Blake Snell, and Michael Kopech? Think they can all possibly be role 6 pitchers?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Mella has one of the better fastballs I've seen this year, and had made some notable strides in refining his delivery when I caught him at the Cal League AS game last week. Note on him here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26806 Full report from earlier in the year here: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/4/13/8398623/scouting-the-california-league-tyler-beede-keury-mella-brett-phillips

Snell still faces some command and arsenal depth concerns, but the performance has obviously been lights out this year. And Kopech might have the most upside of all on account of an evil FB in his own right: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26455 (Wilson Karaman)
2015-06-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Which arm do you like better in the Rays system currently, Blake Snell or Brent Honeywell? Who has the higher ceiling?
(Ned from Flanders)
I think Honeywell has moved ahead of Snell in the Rays system (slightly) and has a higher ceiling by a little bit. (Mike Gianella)
2015-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good afternoon. What are your thoughts on Blake Snell?
(GoTribe06 from Lynchburg)
in a nutshell, he's one of those "when he finds his control/command the light switch may be flipped" guys. (Harry Pavlidis)
2015-06-15 19:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on grant Holmes, Sean Newcomb and Blake Snell and whose done more to increase his stock?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
I'm not sure there's a prospect who's had a better year than Blake Snell. Newcomb's command has been worse than anticipated, so it's hard to say he's helped his stock at all. Holmes has met expectations; his stuff is too good for the Midwest League. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Which young arm has biggest upside? Luis Ortiz, Reynaldo Lopez, Blake Snell, Luis Severino, or Yadier Alvarez?
(seddrah from seattle)
I'll go with Tuck's boy Reynaldo here. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-04-29 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the bigger upside: Dylan Baker, Blake Snell, or Branden Kline?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Snell has the biggest upside. (Bret Sayre)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is it Moncada time yet in Greenville? IF not, to hold me over til then...who ya got in a FSL smack down between Alex Reyes and Blake Snell?
(Handsome NAMBER from Mortville)
Hagerstown in a couple of weeks. And Alex Reyes. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)There are a couple of names that I see frequently, Blake Snell and Dylan Baker. What do you know of these guys and who has the higher 'achievable' upside?
(Silverback38 from VA)
I don't know that much on Snell but know he has some arm strength. I saw his velocity was in the upper 90s last start. I have missed Baker somehow over his last few starts. I will see him this year, at some point, hopefully soon. I know he is mid-90s with some command. I would say Baker has the more achievable upside. (CJ Wittmann)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has higher upside betwwen Blake Snell and Henry Owens?
(Mellens from Boston)
I will take Owens. I think he has a better feel for pitching and the top two pitches will end up being more impressive than Snell. (Mark Anderson)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Two questions in one: Have you put eyed on Blake Snell this year? any concern about his big walk rates? Hunter Dozier's plate discipline looks good so far in the Pioneer league. What do you expect as he moves up to A ball? Also does his defense profile anywhere but 3b?
(AnthopoJays from Houston )
I haven't seen Snell personally, but I talked to a scout who really believed in him. Snell is still working on mechanics and the command should improve going forward. Dozier is putting up solid numbers in the Pioneer League, but from the video I've seen it looks like he's a 3B going forward. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are any of these arm prospects going to make an impact in 2 years for fantasy owners?: Roberto Osuna, Lucas Giolito, Heath Hembree, Matt Wisler, or Blake Snell?
(Hector from Santa Ana)
I'd bet on Wisler of that group. Hembree should be a major leaguer, but we'll see if he's doing anything of fantasy import. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Bret, I play in a fairly deep competitive keeper league 16 team with a 20 man minor system. I am always looking for the edge in future top prospects as they carry quite the value in mid season trades etc. In 2011 I was able to grab a pre breakout Taveras and Bogaerts, since that year I am always looking for prospects who look to really make that jump from back end or outside the top 100 to future top 30 stud. I was wondering if you had some names to watch in A and Low A, that could make these leaps, particularly position players. Alen Hanson and Polanco are already picked up, Adalberto Mondesi is spoken for as well, trying to stay ahead of my competition.
(Brandon from Toronto)
If you want a few off the radar names, how about Zach Eflin and Dilson Herrera. And if you don't need to dig quite that deep, check out Dorssys Paulino, Blake Snell, Jeimer Candelario and Joe Ross. (Bret Sayre)
