2021-06-30 13:00:00 (link to chat) | The Angels are playing Luis Rengifo in RF (.138/.167/.259) in RF. When do we see Jo Adell (.262/.318/.579 at SL)? (KerryFam4 from Florida) | I get the desire to see Adell (I was basically his biggest booster pre-2020 call up), but there were real issues exposed and it's not clear to me that his slugging at Triple-A necessarily negates those concerns. He needs to make better contact on pitches in the zone, or he's going to get eaten alive like Keston Hiura did before his recent adjustment. Once he makes that change, I think he'll show up in Anaheim. (Craig Goldstein) |
2021-01-21 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Sorry if this was answered somewhere that I missed, but did Jo Adell not qualify? (Jason from Nashville) | Adell along with a few other guys that weren't strict PA/IP cutoffs got bumped by the new rookie eligibility rules they added to account for the 2020 season. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2020-11-13 12:00:00 (link to chat) | How much has Jo Adell's value fallen, a year ago he was trout 3.0 and Acuna 2.0, now there is a lot of bust talk and he may never develop the hit tool....??? (brad from NJ) | I'm pretty glad I don't have to rank Jo Adell this year. The in-zone contact rate was bad which seems stickier than some other negative hit tool markers. The swing has gotten even noisier though, so it's possible there is a mechanical fix here. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2020-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are a couple guys you’re looking to ravound next year? (Quincy from Ames) | Is it cloying to say Jo Adell? I don't think he's this bad even if I am legitimately concerned about his in-zone contact rate in general. Adell, Dahl, Victor Robles, Yoan Moncada just to name a few. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jo Adell struggled to lift the ball in his first game in the majors. How worried about this are you? (JP from CT) | Jeffrey is making fun of me because of a comment in our gchat last night, but I was a little surprised to see him hit a grounder in his last at-bat. I'm not worried but I expect him to drive the ball more, generally. Also the play at first on his grounder to Seager was closer than it had any right to be. (Craig Goldstein) |

2020-06-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat. I have been seeing a trend of expert starting to lean towards Lux as the second best prospect and Adell as third of course after Franco. What say you? (brad from NJ) | I totally understand the Lux love. He's up and he's good. I think he might be safer than Adell, but I don't think there's nearly the upside that you get from Jo Adell. I think Adell should be closer to #1 than #3. (Mark Barry) |
2020-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | When do you see Brandon Marsh coming up? How do you think he compares to Carlson, Monte Harrison, kelenic, Rodriguez etc. (Tommy from LA) | I think Marsh arrives in 2021 at this point. He likely begins the season back in Double-A, though he should move to Triple-A pretty quickly (as soon as Jo Adell moves on to the majors). I prefer all those outfielders (except Harrison) to Marsh (Harrison really should not be part of this conversation). I view Marsh as a potential 5+/5/5+ bat, which is not too dissimilar from Dylan Carlson (5+/5+/5). Both Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic are next level in tools. At peak, I think Marsh could hit around .275/.350/.450/20/15, give or take, which is a stones throw from Carlson (.280/.360/.490/25/10). I just think he carries a bit more risk given his injury history, proximity, and production. We do really like Marsh here at BP. (Jesse Roche) |
2020-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat) | What can I expect from Jo Adell this season? Is he worth rostering in a 10 team fantasy league? (matzabal from co) | I'd want some clarity on how and if teams are manipulating service time before I took any prospect in a redraft format without a clear path to playing time, like say Luis Robert. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2020-03-11 13:00:00 (link to chat) | how long will I get to watch Jo Adell here before the angels stop being scummy? (Chansen8895 from Salt Lake City) | I'm guessing we see him in the majors sometime in late April. Brian Goodwin isn't the worst stopgap option in the outfield until then. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Give me the names of top prospects who are going to come up this year? (Charlie from Atlanta) | The list is extensive. Here are top-50 prospects who likely will be in the majors at some point in 2020: Jo Adell, Gavin Lux, Luis Robert, MacKenzie Gore, Carter Kieboom, Dylan Carlson, Nick Madrigal, Jesus Luzardo, Dustin May, Brendan Rodgers, Nate Pearson, Casey Mize, Forrest Whitley, Alec Bohm, Cristian Pache, Ryan Mountcastle, Spencer Howard, and Matt Manning. There are obviously others, and even more who will surprise, but I'd wager these prospects will arrive at some point. (Jesse Roche) |
2020-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Alright,
the elephant in the room:
will Jo Adell make the 2020 Opening Day roster for the Angels? (Donnymo from Davis) | No. I'd guess May-ish if I had to. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-11-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does JRod have an upside comparable to Jo Adell? (Martin from Berlin) | Well, that's some whiplash. I am of course conversely the high guy on staff on Jo Adell (no, Craig doesn't count). But there's a short list of potential superstar outfielders this cycle, and Rodriguez is one of them, sure. (Seattle Mariners Top 10 Chat) |
2019-11-18 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jo Adell is great and all but this Angels farm system still seems depleted and disappointing, like everything Craig has ever done. Anyway, Jo Adell reminds me of prime Matt Kemp, is that a reasonable comp? (Yuri from Israel) | I think the shape will be a little different, better glove, more game pop, maybe more .270-.280 than .300+. I've used Justin Upton before, although Kemp is a better physical comp for Adell (who somehow keeps finding good weight to add). Kemp also had a weird peak among all-star level players, with the MVP season following a disaster year, and uneven seasons around them. (Los Angeles Angels Top 10 Chat) |
2019-11-11 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If forced to rank players in terms of future value over the next 10 years of their MLB career, would Wander Franco occupy the same tier as Yelich, Acuna, Soto, Lindor, etc.? If not, who would be some fellows in his tier? (Bill from Capitol Hill) | Man I love Wander Franco, but you can't rank him in the top tier of major league producers until there's some major league production. I made this point last year that by June or so, I would have take Juan Soto comfortably over Vlad jr and any other prospect. Look, it's perfectly plausible that he ends up as one of the 10-15 best players in baseball for a good stretch of his career, but you can't rank him with those guys yet. (The fellows in his tier are Jo Adell, Luis Robert, Adley Rutschman, those kind of names) (Tampa Bay Rays Top 10 Chat) |
2019-10-18 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Steve got a couple of true/false questions for you :).
O'Neil Cruz will at some stage in his MLB career lead the league in home runs?
Jo Adell will be at some stage in his MLB career will win the Triple Crown ?
Forest Whitley will strike out 250+ in at least one season of his MLB career?
Thanks for the chat mate. (boatman44 from Liverpool) | ONeil Cruz could lead the league in home runs, given that Pete Alonso//Joey Gallo/Cody Bellinger/Christian Yelich/Nolan Arenado/etc. all get hurt. In other words, not liekly.
Jo Adell will probably strike out too much (but hey who isn't these days) to have the batting average/OBP necessary to win it. Whitley like I stated earlier has the highest upside of any pitcher in the minors. Given how the Astros work with pitchers, a 250 strikeout season would not shock me. (Steve Givarz) |
2019-10-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Seems Jo Adell got schooled in AAA, over 120 AB's and ZERO HR's....ouch! Any cause for worry? (marcos from Italy) | He's 20 and was on his third level of the year, the other two of which he destroyed. The only cause for worry about Jo Adell is finding an adequate word to describe his ceiling. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-10-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What non playoff team do you see making the biggest turnaround in 2020 (Pinnacle Racing from Miami) | Assuming you mean like, wins gained relative to the year prior there are three that stand out to me as possibilities. San Diego (we were a year early on the hype, additional experience/graduations of rookies, maybe a better manager, full season of Paddack/Lamet), Cincinnati (tougher one bc of division but the run differential says they were better than this, I like what DJ has done with the pitching, maybe a fuller year of Senzel), Los Angeles Angels (Jo Adell) (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-10-04 14:15:00 (link to chat) | How reckless would it be to trade Chris Paddack for Jo Adell in a dynasty format? What do you see as fair value in terms of major league talent for a prospect like Adell? (NGBags11 from Upstate) | Craig will tell you to always trade the arm for the bat. Paddack has significant major league success already, but if he's *only* this good (and given the durability risks) I'd go for it. I suspect Adell is going to check in again as the second best prospect in baseball and he's a close-to-ready bat. There aren't many arms with <2 years of high end major league performance I wouldn't deal for him. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-09-27 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Assuming service time shenanigans, is Jo Adell up immediately after Super 2? (Ed from White Plains) | Eh, I don't know if there is a need to wait that long, given the Angels win-now attitude. At worst it should be after the clawback date. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-09-06 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Jordyn Adams didn't have a standout statistical season, but he more than held his own. For a guy with precious little high-level baseball experience, did he actually overachieve? Would you say he's proving to be a real baseball talent rather than "just" a premium athlete? (Not Jordyn Adams from Here) | I don't know if I'd go with overachieve, but I think we do forget both just how brutal the MWL is to hit in for a 19-year-old and that not everyone is gonna be Jo Adell in the pros from day one (would that it were true). That said, he's still quite raw and it may take some time for the physical projection to, well project. I suspect he's more or less held serve as a prospect for us (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-08-30 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Jon, this isn’t really Mike Trout. I often get frustrated with the Los Angeles of Anaheim largely because they have arguably one of the greatest positional players in history on their team in Mike Trout and they’re just never that good. Who in their minor league system is there to get excited about? (Mike Trout from Anaheim, CA) | Well, there's this Jo Adell kid, who I'm told is pretty good.
But aside from him, ehhhhhhh maybe Brandon Marsh? Toolsy OF, pretty close to being ready. Don't know a ton about the low minors, and since the planet will be a sizzling husk by the time those guys become relevant, I'm not sure it matters. Carpe diem! (Jon Hegglund) |
2019-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How is west coast living so far? I was just out in Portland for a wedding and came back rather impressed with how the climate is around there. As for a fantasy dynasty baseball question, I have a glut of high upside outfielders on my roster (including Jo Adell), would I be wise to try and shop around Max Keplar this offseason to try and sell high on him? (Mike from The Good Land) | The West Coast is a different world, man. It's the dry season now, so it's like 80 degrees, sunny, and not humid every single day. Then it's a gorgeous 60 degrees every night. No wonder everyone is outside all the time here! As for Kepler, I like him a lot, as long as the rabbit ball stays in place. He's got a bit of BABIP movement that could see him hit .275, too. But, yes, if you have a lot of outfielders, you should be shopping him. (JP Breen) |
2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat) | What team could use Kole Calhoun? With Trout manning CF, Justin Upton solidly in LF, and Jo Adell loudly knocking on the door, Calhoun's 2020 option is reasonable, but not on the Angels. Why do we hear buzz about Castellanos, but not Calhoun? (Dylan from RI) | Easy answer used to be Cleveland but they just picked up two outfielders. Braves could maybe use him since they're playing a (hot, admittedly) Duvall right now? I think the Angels unload him in the offseason. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-07-11 23:00:00 (link to chat) | In a 20 team, keep forever dynasty league with an outfield of Yelich, Acuna, Juan Soto, Schwarber, and Jo Adell. I have been trying to move Adell for pitching (active or prospect), but I am getting little reasonable interest. Am I overvaluing? What pitchers should I target? (beringstorm from Tacoma) | Nice disguise, Craig. You are not overvaluing, he's the #2 prospect in all of baseball. In a 20-team I would require a top-10 starter as the starting point of a package if'n I were to move Adell (which you should only do right now if the arm you acquire is going to chase a title for you this year) (Wilson Karaman) |
2019-07-09 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Adell, keller, madrigal, trammell. Least mlb impact over years 20 & 21? Who should I shop for this year improvements? (Vic from Iowa) | Keller or Trammell. Madrigal is close and will get you steals even if he isn't a star. I have my concerns about Keller's continued development in his org, although I can't really bake that into his ranking as much as you'd think. Trammell is in the process of unborking some swing stuff so that might take some time. Hold Jo Adell close and never let him go. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-07-09 12:00:00 (link to chat) | What odds do you give for these prospects to debut THIS season: Jo Adell, Luis Robert, Casey Mize, Dustin May, Bo Bichette, Gavin Lux. (The Colonel from Pasadena, CA) | Best bets are probably Bichette as a September call up and May as a utility arm for the stretch run/playoffs. I imagine the Tigers are going to be very cautious with Mize after the shoulder issue. Robert and Lux could hypothetically be an injury away at some point though. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-07-09 12:00:00 (link to chat) | How good is Jo Adell going to be? And are there anymore prospects in the pipeline that can help him and Trout in the next couple of seasons? (Patrick from San Antonio) | Angels system is sneaky good now, but some of the next couple of seasons help (Marsh, Jones) has stagnated a bit. Adell and Trout gives you a heckuva core though. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-07-08 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Will Ospreay is the Jo Adell of wrestling. It’s really stupid that he’s not at the top of everybody’s lists right now. (The Whole Damn Show from @deeej15) | We have reached the wrestling segment of the chat.
I like this comparison, in that Ospreay is the most talented and spectacular wrestler in the world, just like Adell is the most talented and spectacular prospect, but Okada has that certain floor that Franco provides. And there's arguments for any of them. (Jarrett Seidler) |
2019-06-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Given the gap between the Astros and everyone else in the AL West so far this year, and the baseline they're working from talent-wise, when do you see the potential for a challenger in the division, a la the Twins taking over Cleveland's assumed top spot in the Central? Same goes for the Dodgers and the NL West. (Carl from Richmond, VA) | The Astros and Dodgers definitely seem to be better set up for the future than almost anyone in baseball, despite the incredible baseline they've been working from for three seasons now. So I know what you mean. That said, one only need to look at Cleveland to remember things can change dramatically over the course of a season (though Houston seems more inclined to plug holes with cash). I can't imagine that MIke trout, a healthy Shohei Ohtani and maybe Jo Adell won't be able to get over the .500 gap next season, and the A's seem congenitally inclined to turn on a dime. The Padres, meanwhile, loom in the NL West. It's hard to not worry that this is just how things are in MLB now, with one or two serious division races all season, but I have to hope that's not the way of the future for the league. (Ginny Searle) |
2019-05-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are your top 10 dynasty hitting prospects right now? (Eugene from Monroe) | For guys that haven't debuted yet, I'll say: Wander Franco, Keston Hiura, Kyle Tucker, Jo Adell, Alex Kiriloff, Austin Riley, Taylor Trammell, Brendan Rodgers, Luis Robert and Yordan Alvarez (Mark Barry) |
2019-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Dynasty league question please - when it comes to bats, list the top three that you see as having the best chance to land on the top 20 prospect list for 2020?
How about for 2021 please?
thanks (Marcolio from Gallipoli, Italy) | A good place to start is our top 101 this year. Wander Franco, Jo Adell, Taylor Trammell, etc. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Craig Have you had any news about Jo Adell timeline to start swinging ,extent of injury etc? Thanks. (boatman44 from Liverpool) | No real changes from what was announced in the spring. Look for him to get back to it around draft time. No reason to rush him back from his injuries. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-03-11 16:00:00 (link to chat) | In a 10-team mixed, 6x6 H2H keeper league (AVG, OPS, QS, K/9 + other standard stats), 15 keepers, pretty deep rosters. Based on our league and draft settings (details unimportant), I am likely set up for drafting either Ohtani or Jo Adell (my favorite prospect still available) as a keeper in a keep-forever league. Who are you taking? (Ben from Alabama) | It's Ohtani for me. Adell is a terrific prospect but it's hard to compete with a guy who has already shown high-end major league ability on both sides of the ball. If Ohtani makes the two-way thing work over a full season, he's a first round pick, and he has two paths to premium value even if he doesn't. (Darius Austin) |
2019-03-08 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Franco or Adell? (Sammy from Miami) | I've gotta go with Jo Adell. I like his speed more than Wander Franco's, so he has a higher chance of being a true five-category guy. But I don't blame you if you want an elite MI guy. Franco offers better batting average upside, which is becoming as rare as stolen bases. Really it's a choice between two top-10 guys who aren't that far apart. (Kevin Jebens) |
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat) | Jordyn Adams, decent shot he's the big riser on the 101 next year? (Graig Coldstein from Duke) | It's really all about the hit tool with the uber-toolsy athlete types. If he looks good or even just holds his own against more advanced pitching? You betcha. But I think Adams is going to be a slow burn guy -- Jo Adell is the exception, not the rule - BC (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre) |
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat) | Question on how these rankings work. Based on these rankings, in a dynasty format you would always chose the player that is ranked above the other? For example in a dynasty draft would you take Bichette over Whitley because Bichette is ranked 12th while Whitley is ranked 16th? Or do you prefer whitley over the few guys ahead of him like Kiriloff, Riley and Bichette? Just trying to figure out the best way to read the list. Thank you. (Fish and Chips from Seaside) | To best use this list, you have to know where you are in the contention cycle and what your league tends to value most. If you're ready to compete right now, there's a good argument for taking, say, Kyle Tucker over Jo Adell, etc. If you have a loaded infield and zero pitching and want to pop Whitley over Bichette, that's fine too. Basically, we make tiers because we're saying you can prefer any one player over any other in that tier and we'd understand. What we wouldn't understand is preferring, like, Kristian Robinson to Jesus Luzardo. When guys are many tiers apart we suggest using it more as a straight valuation list/guide. - BC (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre) |
