2020-12-04 12:00:00 (link to chat)Posey and Yadier Molina: How much more work do they need to do to improve their HOF case?
(Mike Wilson from Rhode Island)
I don't have a huge hot take on Molina's HoF case, although I'd note if he cruises in so should Brian McCaan. Catchers are a tricky eval for anyone and you end up succumbing to more #narrative arguments. I think Posey is most of the way there and the MVP and World Series titles help push the counting stats over the line, but he probably needs an okay decline phase to be a first ballot guy. I guess watch how Mauer does since he's a decent comp so far. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)In an NL-only league that scores OBP and SLG instead of AVG, is it time to cut bait on Yadier Molina and Buster Posey in favor of waiver guys like Kurt Suzuki, Tyler Flowers, or Brian McCann?
(Tynan from Tacoma, WA)
I'm facing a similar Posey question in a couple of leagues. I know injuries are involved, neither have really hit for *any* power. In the OBP/SLG format, especially in redraft, I'm cool with moving on, as crazy as that feels to say. (Mark Barry)
2019-02-25 16:00:00 (link to chat)Danny Jansen looks like a lock to start in Toronto. What are realistic expectations for his stat line in 2019?
(CubbieBear from Chi-Town)
Yup, he's pretty much a lock. Conventional wisdom (and ADP) has a clear top-8 at the position, but I'm not so sure that Jansen doesn't outperform a Willson Contreras or Yadier Molina by season's end. PECOTA has .235/14/49/48/2 in 412 PA. I'll push the average up to .250, and the RBI up by 5-10, but otherwise this looks right to me. (Jon Hegglund)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give me the pros and cons of Chris Okey? Is thought to be able to stay at catcher?
(Gest from Oh)
Pros: He's got some pop from the right side, and he should be able to stay at catcher.
Cons: Long swing, and not going to remind anyone of Yadier Molina behind the plate.

I see a backup catcher. There's nothing wrong with that, but I was surprised that he was a top 50 selection. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)My dynasty league appears to hate catchers...Derek Norris, Yan Gomes, and Yadier Molina are all on waivers in a very deep 12-teamer, and there is NO trade market (other than when I overpayed for Sal Perez in my first year in the league and didn't know about the value of catchers until Brian McCann was dropped for David Murphy). Is this the case for all dynasty leagues?
(John from Texas)
I don't play in any dynasty leagues. I would assume that given the keep forever nature of dynasty that the finite shelf life of catchers would make this more likely than in a Roto or redraft. But I'd have to ask our dynasty experts.

Bret?

BRET?!?!?!? (Mike Gianella)
2015-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was in the ballpark for Austin Hedges' first career homer yesterday. What are the odds he ever becomes a starter?
(Alex from Anaheim)
Are we talking about starting for a few seasons, or for half a decade? If it's the former, then I would say very high. This isn't a Christian Bethancourt situation, where Hedges is 90 percent arm and nothing else. Hedges is a more complete defender, and I think we've seen how those types can latch on as starters without producing much with the bat-be it Mike Matheny, Brad Ausmus, young Yadier Molina, Jose Molina, Rene Rivera, whoever. Is a team going to build around Hedges, or make him a lifer? No; he's not going to hit enough for that-but employing Hedges as a starter until they find an upgrade? Yeah. Absolutely. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any info on the Cardinals' attempts to develop an in-house catching backup for Yadier Molina who's better than Tony Cruz (which isn't a very high bar)? Does Carson Kelly have a realistic chance of becoming adequate? Are there others I don't know about? Yadi isn't going to last forever...
(Bill from New Mexico)
I do think Kelly has some potential to help at the MLB level, but it could still take a while for him to get there. I've heard encouraging reports on the early progress he's made behind the plate, and I there is hope for the bat. Kelly may arrive in time to help the transition from Molina, but I'm not sure he's going to be ready in time to be a viable backup instead of Cruz in the short term. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Which baseball player would be the best at curling?
(Beau from San Francisco)
Justin Morneau, born in British Columbia. I would also pay too much money to watch Yadier Molina try it and become terrific at it. (Matt Sussman)
2014-07-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Welcome to the chat room! Got any idea why the Cardinals found it necessary to defenestrate George Kottaras so quickly as Yadier Molina stand-in? Is he THAT bad at catcher defense? Supporting evidence?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Yeah, he is. In 2013 he put up -33 runs per 7000 pitches. That's really bad. Worse than Salty, and worse than A.J. Ellis (who admits he's a terrible framer). (Noah Woodward)
2014-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Harry! I just read that your pitch-framing data credits Yadier Molina with +157(!) runs over the past 5 years. Added to his bWAR, fWAR, WARP, or any other yardstick I know of, Molina would suddenly and *easily* be baseball's best player over that timeframe (5-6 WAR better than Miggy Cabrera). Does it (1)make sense to you, or (2)make you want to re-appraise your own numbers?
(Bullwinkle J. Mussolini from Whassamatta U.)
Makes sense, and I feel very good about the numbers we have. They'll be released on BP and Brooksbaseball.net this month, along with blocking, maybe a new look at throwing and some new stuff on game calling. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Tucker Barnhart? How do you evaluate and predict a catchers defensive ability, game management, and all those other "intangibles" for a catcher. Maybe those skills don't directly relate to fantasy, but I think they indirectly affect your pitchers (especially the young ones---see Yadier Molina). I guess what I am asking is who is the next (either in the 2014 draft or in MiLB) Ron Karkovice, Gary Carter, Jim Sundberg, Roy Campanella and in my humble opinion, Yadier Molina?
(Eli from Boston)
This is probably a better question for Parks and the MiLB crew here. I'm not super familiar with Barnhart, as he's not a fantasy asset. I can tell you that the best defensive catching prospect right now is Austin Hedges, and Mr. Hedges is not a Top 100 fantasy name. (Ben Carsley)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What major league position player would you most like to see on the mound?
(Seth from Detroit)
Yadier Molina or Andrelton Simmons. (Mark Anderson)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would offering Victor Martinez and Julio Teheran for Yadier Molina in an 11-team points league where pretty much everything counts and there are 7 freezers per year be an insult?
(Yatchisin from Spitball City)
No, you're trying to cash in on Teheran's hotness. I don't think it'll get accepted, but it's not a ludicrous initial salvo to test the waters. I hate when people offer AJ Ellis & Jason Marquis for Yadi Molina and act like that's a reasonable way to test the waters. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)14 team dynasty league. Who wins long term? Wieters and Starlin Castro for Yadier Molina and Andrus?
(Carl from MD)
I'm not sure either side loses. Both sides get a lot of talent. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Yadier Molina have a legit shot at NL MVP over Posey/Braun? Who's the NL Cy Young?
(Brian_K from Missouri)
I kinda don't think so, which is a shame, because Yadi has had a ridiculous year. I'm sure he's getting a ton of press in STL, but you don't hear much about him in the national MSM. I think it's Posey's to lose right now. He's got everything going for him: the comeback from injury, a division win, and (obviously) he's been playing like a house a'fire since the ASB.

NL Cy Young? Hell, I don't know. I thought Kershaw would run away with it, but this injury has been terrible for his chances. Totally up in the air now, I reckon. (Ian Miller)
2012-08-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)The splattering of Yadier Molina by Josh Harrison in a home-plate collision is renewing calls for rule changes to reduce the number of injuries from catcher/runner impacts. Got an opinion on that?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I'm generally anti-splattering, unless insects are involved. Real insects, not just Hunter Pence. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-07-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank the top 5 catchers for the rest of 2012 in an obp league?
(Jim from NY)
1- Buster Posey
2- Joe Mauer
3- Yadier Molina
4- Brian McCann
5- Mike Napoli

Miguel Montero and Matt Wieters could easily jump into the mix. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Picture this: Dickey deserves to make (and possibly start) the ASG. However, none of the presumed NL all-star catchers have experience catching a knuckler. Dickey lobbies to have Josh Thole added to roster as his "personal catcher". Request is turned down because now ... "the game counts" and Thole is not worthy of a spot on the roster. Comments?
(dianagram from VORGville)
Personally, I want Zack Greinke to start the All-Star Game just because it's in Kansas City. Others, like Dickey, are more likely candidates though.

As for the scenario, it's interesting. I can see it being a possibility, complete with Thole not making it. And I wouldn't be too saddened by it. Catchers may not be used to catching the knuckler, but I bet they can if necessary (especially for 2 innings). the more important consideration, though, is what La Russa thinks about catchers catching the knuckler. I bet he'd be happy to give Yadier Molina that chance. If Brian McCann is the starter though, he might think differently... (Larry Granillo)
2010-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any guesses on what blackmail material Tony LaRussa has on John Mozeliak in order to force him into make all these moves (Trade Ryan, keep Skip, sign Laird, etc)?
(Andy from Chicago)
One way to think of it is that this is one of those slow-motion divorces where one side's going to give the other everything it wants, so that he can choke on it. Schumaker has no business being a starting second baseman in the major leagues, but Laird's a fairly reasonable fall-back position in case anything bad happened to Yadier Molina, because he's at least durable, and if you're down a starting catcher, that's handy. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Russell Martin just done? Are speedy catchers just always prey to Sick Boy's theory of acting from Trainspotting?
(Cory from LA)
I'm reasonably optimistic, particularly given that he's back to playing ball and won't miss Opening Day due to the groin problem.

You know, for all of the flaws he showed last year, Martin was still the most valuable catcher in the NL this side of Brian McCann and Yadier Molina according to WARP.

All that said, I don't get Trainspotting reference. How does Sean Connery's career fit into all of this? (Jay Jaffe)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you aware of any fantasy-baseball-like games out there that give defense its due? One reason why I have a hard time getting interested in fantasy is that it seems to chronically undervalue guys like Franklin Gutierrez, Yadier Molina (and the other Molinas to some extent), etc., whose gloves are what make them stars. Are there leagues and systems that might scratch that itch?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I haven't seen any leagues with good defensive statistics, just the basic kind I would never use in analysis. I did play in Ball on a Budget at Beyond the Box Score last year, and that used WAR, so defense was included. (Marc Normandin)
