2017-04-11 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Juan Soto about to jump up the prospect rankings? (Craig from DC) | He has less than 50 at bats above rookie ball, and he was ranked as the 57th best prospect in baseball coming into this year by our guys. He could very easily mash and wind up jumping 20-30 spots, but given how far away he is and the fact that he won't play a premium defensive position he could backslide pretty far too.
Not sure if that's helpful, but now you have me pulling up Courtney Hawkins and getting all sad. (Nick Schaefer) |
2015-07-28 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Who has maxed out their frame more, Courtney Hawkins, Micker Adolfo or Miguel Herrera? (James Fegan from Elkhart) | You seem salty about that JAM-MEX game. It's close between Hawkins and Herrera but you gotta give it to El Piojo. Also if you ever look up a photo of him during his playing days you can pretty much confirm that there's no way anyone in their right minds would ever want to fight him. I don't want that coming at me ever. Nope. No sir. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2015-03-25 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Courtney Hawkins has looked good this spring, but all the top prospect lists seem to have written him off. Do you have any thoughts on him? Like his upside and chances of reaching it. (cracker73 from Ohio) | Bad ball hitters crush it in the spring all the time. Pitchers are working on certain things and don't really care about getting you out. He's a strong kid with raw pop, but is a mistake-hitter through and through. The body concerns me too. I don't like his chances of becoming a regular. (Jordan Gorosh) |
2014-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any high school prospects you like from the upper Midwest? Here in Minnesota, last year we saw LHP Sam Hentges go in the 4th Round. And just across the river, OF Jeren Kendall was a top-100 prospect, although he went to Vanderbilt. Who do you like this year? (CGAnderson from Minneapolis) | Good question, and I think Kendall is going to be a hell of a player for Vandy.
If you count Ontario then OF Demi Orimoloye is very intriguing. Let's call him the Canadian Courtney Hawkins. His swing is a bit more raw at the same age but he's a better runner and has made huge improvements over the past year and it looks like he's within striking distance of the first round at this point. Stateside, Michigan OF Nick Plummer is a guy that is going to get some early round looks as well. He lacks the kind of loud tools you'd typically associate with an early round high school prospect, but makes up for it with precocious on-base skills. One of the best pure hitters in the high school class and he pairs it with average playable power. Both of these guys are going to have big range of opinions from scouts depending on their taste, as they are very contrasting players. Orimoloye is the raw ingredients guy that you dream on, Plummer already displays valuable skills but doesn't have high end athleticism. (Todd Gold) |
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat) | What are the chances Courtney Hawkins puts together a credible major league career? Last year's debacle apparently didn't kill him. That's a victory right there, isn't it? (GrinnellSteve from Grinnell) | Developmental speaking, surviving and rebounding from setback is always a positive thing. But I don't see Hawkins as an impact talent at the major league level. Could be a AAAA type or maybe an up/down power guy only guy, but I don't see the hit tool utility to bring the bat into a major league regular profile. (Jason Parks on the Top 50) |
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Going on a week-long baseball road trip in NC starting tomorrow. Anyone on the Salem team I'd want to see(when they play Winston-Salem)? (Silverback38 from VA) | Bad luck - Salem is pretty much the only boring affiliate Boston has this year. Try to go when Brian Johnson is starting, and look out for Simon Mercedes, who I know turned some heads this spring. On offense, it's Vicino and Dent, which isn't inspiring. The good news is you'll see Courtney Hawkins and Tim Anderson on the other side of the field, and if you're hot the breeze from Keon Barnum's swing should cool you down. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Did any prospect come to camp who drastically improved/got worse to the point where it greatly changed your opinion of their ceilings? (MonkeyEpoxy from Amarillo) | A few: Chris Bostick with the Rangers looked a lot better than I expected. It's a 2B profile, but I'm sold this kid can hit, which could make him more than just a utility option down the line. He really impressed me. I wasn't especially high on A's BJ Boyd coming in, but I dropped him a grade after seeing his spring physique and swing at the plate. I'm not a fan. I wanted to like Courtney Hawkins more but I just can't go high on the guy. It's not a role 3 or anything because of the power potential and athleticism, but I can't put a major league regular grade on him. He's a 4 for me. (Jason Parks) |
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Let's say Chicago or Detroit called saying they want my players and are willing to offer prospects. Who should I ask for? Both farm systems I think stink. (Kevin from Houston ) | Considering you can't yet ask for this year's draft picks, the pickings are going to be pretty slim. From Detroit, the obvious answer is Nick Castellanos, but you could also be intrigued by players like Endrys Briceno, Drew VerHagen, Brian McCann, and Steven Moya. From the White Sox you can look at Courtney Hawkins, despite what Mortimer says, and I still believe in Trayce Thompson a little bit. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is there anyone in the White Sox' system (including September call-ups) that have a somewhat-conceivable shot at being above-average regulars? (Ethan Spalding from Madison, Wi) | Courtney Hawkins obviously had a disappointing season but still has potential. Erik Johnson and Semien have a chance to be role 5 guys, which isn't crazy exciting or above average but still solid. I'm looking forward to checking out Tim Anderson at instructs in a couple weeks. I've heard good things there. (Jason Cole) |
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat) | THREE??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!!? (Momma Hawkins from Behind you) | I assumed I would start with this one. Yes, I graded Courtney Hawkins as an organizational player. I can recognize the plus raw power, but I have severe doubts on how much of the power will be used against quality pitching. Hawkins' pitch recognition is to the level that pitchers are able to exploit him in every at bat. Physically, Hawkins has a body that has the potential to get worse.
Going forward I hope Hawkins is able to make the necessary adjustments, improve his hit tool, and jump back onto the prospect radar. For me, it just is not there right now. (Zach Mortimer) |
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Are there any notable guys you and Prof Parks strongly disagree on? (Shawn from My Cubicle) | From what I can tell, there aren't many that we're complete opposites on. I think I'm a little lighter on Taijuan Walker than he is, and I think I have a little more belief in Courtney Hawkins than he does. Although given Hawkins' start (45 K's in 23 games!), I'm starting to wonder...even though he is in High-A. (Jason Cole) |
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Courtney Hawkins - what's his ceiling? (xavier from texas) | First-division corner outfielder, but I'm not as high on Hawkins as others. I know he's a Texan and I love the back-flipping aspect, but I've seen him several times at the pro level and I don't see the loud tools. He has a good approach, and he can sting a ball when it hits the barrel, but his bat has never grabbed me and forced me to love it. Sample size, I guess. (Jason Parks) |
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat) | We're used to being limited to one, but 0 in the top 101? Where art thou Courtney Hawkins? (justiniodiddly from Chi) | I'm not sure where he is. He was close to making it. Was on initial list. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects) |
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I've always heard Steve Finley comps on Dahl. Is it insane to hear a baseball prospect writer say Courtney Hawkins perfect world comp is Jim Rice? (Mike from Utica, NY) | Comps can be ridiculous. I get it, Courtney Hawkins is black so let's make sure to offer up another black player as a comp. It can be very lazy, but then again, most online scouting is lazy. (Jason Parks) |
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What have the reports been on Courtney Hawkins? I assume he's the best prospect the White Sox have, right? (Justin from Chicago) | Great athlete, speed, strength, can throw, plus bat speed. I think he's their best prospect yes. (Jason A. Churchill) |
