2021-03-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey, thanks for doing the chat. Can you give me an over/under for Zach Eflin holding the gains he made in 2020? Thanks. (ari blum from ny) | Hey, thanks for spelling Eflin correct, rather than Elfin. I don't know that it's reasonable to expect he holds the gains he made in 2020. DRA thought he was an ace. But something like a solid 3rd starter (which Philly definitely needs)? I'm like 60/40 he holds that level. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Zach Eflin seems to have returned to respectability. Real or a mirage? (Phil E from Mainline) | He's a fine 4/5 type, but you probably always want to upgrade from. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-10-18 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Steve, is there anywhere on the BP site where you can see how many minor league options a player has left? It would be great if it was in the player profile or somewhere similar (Ron from Texarkana) | There is not at the moment but many websites have them. I don't refer to them as options but instead as by "years". A player has three years to be optioned back and forth between the minors and majors (some get four but those are rare-ish). This can be in years 1-3 of a player, or up until the final year of team control. Teams often manipulate player's options for extra roster flexibility, but in some cases (such as this one with Zach Eflin https://sports.yahoo.com/phillies-temporary-demotion-will-cost-breakout-pitcher-20000-221349178.html) it can be a PR negative. (Steve Givarz) |
2018-07-12 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What can we expect from Zach Eflin going forward? (Red from Wisconsin) | Good question. DRA is much kinder to him this year than it has been in the past, but he's still outpitching it by more than a run. Some guys simply do that. Is he one of those guys? We don't have enough of a sample to tell us yet. I'm tempted to say err on the side of history, but he's also not the same pitcher he was last year. I think he could be a useful arm, but I don't know that he's the guy you hold out of Manny Machado trade negotiations. (Nicolas Stellini) |
2016-07-13 15:00:00 (link to chat) | What kind of stats should we expect from recently promoted Zach Eflin in Philly? Do you think the league will figure him out the second time around, or does he have enough pitchability to a solid MLB and fantasy starter? Cheers (Duke from Winterset, Iowa) | Solid but unspectacular; I'm not fantasy expert, but I wouldn't lean on him. (Brendan Gawlowski) |
2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Seems with the Velasquez injury Zach Eflin might be getting the call. What are your thoughts on him as a pitching prospect & what should we expect? Any chance he can hang on in the rotation or is he more of a pen arm long term? (Paul from Not Sure) | If he gets the call, I think he should be able to handle himself. Pounds the strike zone with two above-average pitches. Just worried about the breaking-ball(s), but he should be a fine backend starter. (Christopher Crawford) |
2016-06-21 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Who would you rather have in a dynasty league: Mike Clevinger or Zach Eflin & any particular reason? (Jerry from Earth) | Clevinger. When it comes to pitching prospects in roto, I like to bet on stuff. Strikeout rate is the best proxy for stuff in the stat line. Clevinger's strikeout rate throughout his minor league career has been much better than Eflin's. (Scooter Hotz) |
2015-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Where would Andrew Heaney, Tom Windle and Zach Eflin have ranked if they were still in the org? (Dustin Nosler from Stockton, Calif.) | Heaney would have slotted in behind Pederson and ahead of Holmes. Windle was a fringy back of the top ten guy that probably would have settled in the 11-15 range. Eflin as high as right after Holmes and low as after Anderson. So your top ten would have been:
1. Seager 2. Urias 3. Pederson 4. Heaney 5. Holmes 6. Eflin 7. Lee 8. Anderson 9. De Leon 10. Sweeney (NL West Top 10s With Nick Faleris) |
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat) | My big brother may be in the big leagues already, but in the end he'll be "the other Ross", won't he? (The other Ross from SD) | You've come to the wrong place looking for Joe Ross love. Try, like, any of my colleagues. I don't think Tyson is that special either. Let's talk about Zach Eflin. Zach Eflin > Joe Ross. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Can you give me 5 SP prospects you are higher on than industry? I really like Sean Manaea. (JoJo from SD) | Manaea is a good one to like. I think I'm higher, or at least more ready to gamble on, Fried, Zack Lee, A.J. Cole, Zach Eflin and Allen Webster than are some of my peers. I was very high on Giolito last season compared to most, but the industry seems to have caught up with me there. I'm lower on Biddle, Ranaudo, Taillon (slightly), and Lance McCullers than are some in the industry, it seems. (Ben Carsley) |
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Zach Eflin a top 75 prospect? (padremurph from San Diego) | Not for me. Not yet. ( I reserve the right to change my mind and rank him in the top 75) (Jason Parks) |
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Bret, I play in a fairly deep competitive keeper league 16 team with a 20 man minor system. I am always looking for the edge in future top prospects as they carry quite the value in mid season trades etc. In 2011 I was able to grab a pre breakout Taveras and Bogaerts, since that year I am always looking for prospects who look to really make that jump from back end or outside the top 100 to future top 30 stud. I was wondering if you had some names to watch in A and Low A, that could make these leaps, particularly position players. Alen Hanson and Polanco are already picked up, Adalberto Mondesi is spoken for as well, trying to stay ahead of my competition. (Brandon from Toronto) | If you want a few off the radar names, how about Zach Eflin and Dilson Herrera. And if you don't need to dig quite that deep, check out Dorssys Paulino, Blake Snell, Jeimer Candelario and Joe Ross. (Bret Sayre) |
