2018-02-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)I play in a 2 catcher 5 x 5 AL/NL rotisserie league with 15 owners. Two related questions, please: Any recommendations for best value catchers near the end of a snake draft, at both number 1 and number 2? A few years back I drafted Steven Vogt at Utility knowing he would get catcher eligibility. He did, and was one of the top fantasy backstops that year! Anyone like that this year?
(jipcho from Taipei, Taiwan)
Looking at mid 300 or so ADPs on the NFBC site, Alex Avila is at 361. He seems to have a path to playing time and is coming off a solid offensive season. Jason Castro is back there also. He made some offensive improvements last season in Minnesota and was closer to league average. He’ll not likely get back to the glory days of 2013, but you could do worse at C2. As for guys without current C eligibility who might get it, I don’t see anyone who sticks out. (Scott Delp)
2017-05-03 20:00:00 (link to chat)Alex Avila or Stephen Vogt? Thanks
(Hal from Montreal)
God bless Alex Avila, but... no. Vote for Vogt. (David Brown)
2017-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Alex Avila a better option than Rupp and Vogt ROS?
(Ryan from Montreal)
I think he is. Is Avila going to keep these numbers up? No. But he's as good of a bet as any to provide you some worthwhile production at catcher (for his tier). I know the playing time isn't what you'd want, but he really is putting up some solid production. (Eric Roseberry)
2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Why is Alex Avila still catching for the Tigers?
(Patty from BGSU)
He's an excellent defensive catcher, a skilled pitch framer and he gets on base. I wish Ausmus would bat him at the top of the lineup for this reason. (Matt Sussman)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Alex Avila in 2014? Can he return to his 2011 form?
(Steve from Chicago)
He can, but he really needs to stay healthy. Could be bias of watching EVERY day, but I feel like he gets beat up more than any other catcher. Balls off of his body, off of the mask, bats swung around to hit in the back of the head. Just ALWAYS something. I know it happens to all Cs, but I really feel he gets a percentage more than most. (Paul Sporer)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Mike,12tean H2H ,hr, r, RBI,ave,sb ,xbh.Need a push Wieters has had a off season,available are R. Martin,Avila,Y.Gomes.Looking for a fix.Thanks
(Chesty from New Bern,NC)
Hiya Chesty.

I probably like Wieters more than you do, but of those guys I'd be fine with taking Russell Martin over Matt Wieters. Martin has almost 10 steals (he has 9) and the power numbers are relatively close to Wieters'. I have no problem pulling the trigger there (although keep in mind that Martin goes through BA droughts).

Alex Avila's hot right now but I don't like buying in the middle of the streak. Yan Gomes will get more PT with Mark Reynolds' DFA, but I still am not convinced he's going to be a full timer. Try Martin. (Mike Gianella)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Paul Sporer. I have Alex Avila in a super deep 22 team scoresheet league. According to Rod Allen he's now "cheesing like a chess cat", does that increase or decrease his value going forward? Thank you.
(ChoppertoChipper from Edmonton)
It puts him *juuuuuuust* behind Posey and well ahead of Carlos Santana, who is apt to cheesing like a checkers cat far too often. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Alex Avila going to be good again?
(Aaron from Detroit)
Sure! (Matthew Kory)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Alex Avila? I currently have him as my starting catcher in a 16 team h2h dynasty league with McCann on my bench. Will he be a viable option while McCann is hurt? Will McCann even return to being a fantasy starter?
(Brent from California)
See above WRT to Avila. Re. McCann, he's been worked very heavily over the years and dealt with some injuries, but even throughout that he hit 20 HR last year and even added 3 SB's! Did you realize McCann is only 29, too? Far too early to write him off in any format. (Cory Schwartz)
2012-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see big (or at least notable) regression from Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta? The seasons posted by these two were key factors in the Tigers winning 95 last year.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
I think any time you see a guy post a 6 WARP season who has never done anything like that before, you expect a good deal of regression. Peralta's numbers were more in line with his career, although again any time you see an outsized performance you expect some falloff. (Colin Wyers)
2011-08-26 16:00:00 (link to chat)With Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez done, the Tigers have an extra $20M/year to play with in the offseason, I say go get Jose Reyes, put him at second, then you can run out an infield of C Alex Avila, 1B Miguel Cabrera, 2B Reyes, SS Jhonny Peralta, 3B Nick Castellanos. Sound like a plan? If not who should the Tigers go after with the $20m?
(DetroitDale from Florida (eternal spring training))
I would check with Dave Dombrowksi on that stuff -- he seems to have Tigers going pretty good these days (John Coppolella)
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Donning your GM-cap for a moment....if you had been in Detroit making decisions, would you have made the deal with Victor Martinez? Or would you have found a cheaper DH-bat and kept the 1st round pick in this mucho-hyped upcoming draft? Thank you.
(lemppi from Iowa)
A lot depends on how serious they are about getting him time behind the plate as well as at DH, because if he starts 60 games or more as a catcher, it's hard to turn that down for what it means for an offense, especially when the alternatives for playing-time partners for Alex Avila were one low-OBP right-handed swing-and-miss slugger or another. Considering how much money got thrown at guys like John Buck, I think Dombrowski paid a premium in the right way. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi CK - Love it! Any prospects that you have unexplained affinities for?
(iorg34 from Minny)
Todd Frazier, because the bat will play. I find myself hoping Zack Cozart gets taken seriously, given that Paul Janish isn't really a solution, and I'm interested in how Tommy Manzella pans out. It's hard not to like Scott Sizemore and Alex Avila for the Tigers. I'm interested in seeing how Jose Ceda's comeback goes. I think this is the year for Brandon Wood, or at least I hope so. I root for Hank Conger. I'm more fond of Ian Desmond and Shairon Martis than probably makes sense. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gerald Laird will be useful to the Tigers? What do you think of Alex Avila and what do you think his chances are of playing as a starter for the Tigers next season? Who would be the better starting catcher?
(steph from michigan)
I'm a big Avila fan, but maybe it's because I had him as my Tigers sleeper coming into '09 and he made me look very smart. I think Laird is the far better defender, but Avila could offer more with the bat. I would also hope that Avila behaves himself better at basketball games. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on the sudden rise of Alex Avila? Can he be a legitimate starting catcher for the Tigers?
(Boston from Ann Arbor)
I'm a big believer, and yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-10-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)Many Tigers' fans want Alex Avila to play next year in front of Gerald Laird. I think its early for Avila to be counted on even though Laird is iffy. Your thoughts?
(lemppi@msn.com from Ankeny, IA)
Can I hedge? If I'm the Tigers I go into next spring with the catching job as a competition between the two. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)I enjoyed seeing Alex Avila's recognition in your article this week. What is your long-term projection on him?
(George from Charlotte)
If I'm the Tigers, the catching job is wide opening going into the spring. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Alex Avila (C, DET) so far? Have you heard anything about his expected role next year - starter, backup, AAA?
(Capt Science from New York)
I'd bank on him being the starter next season. The Tigers love him and not just because his dad is the assistant GM. This kid can play and he's a real throwback type on top of having talent. (John Perrotto)
