2020-05-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If you could drop any non-all star in their prime from the last 20 years into the KBO who would it be and why? (Craig Fans from No. 1) | I consulted Patrick Dubuque on this because he's my go-to KBO guy. He suggested Jordan Hicks because a) the relievers there are...not good and b) no one throws hard, so 101 is just unfathomable. Add in the extremely contact-oriented swings that are generally employed and it'd be fun to see how that would all interact/if approaches change. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who is a relief pitcher who will become the starting closer this year or next year who has the potential to really break out. I say Munoz. What say you? (Peter from SD) | Munoz would be my choice. Yates is in the final year of his contract. There has been talk of a possible extension, but if the Padres are looking to sell midseason, I have to imagine Yates will be on the move. However, the acquisition of Pagan clouds matters. Other than Munoz, and the aforementioned Karinchak or Clase (Hand also is in the last year of guarantees with a 2021 club option), I like Ty Buttrey. Hansel Robles is in the final year of his contract and the Angels are far from a lock to be competitive despite the Anthony Rendon signing. Also, do not forget about Jordan Hicks who may return late in the year from TJS. (Jesse Roche) |
2019-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What's my future role? (Carlos Martinez from Saint Louis) | Closer. Maybe on a team that doesn't have a healthy Jordan Hicks. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-02-18 16:00:00 (link to chat) | In Nl only, 10 team keeper OBP,k9 league that counts net steals and holds, Need to drop one of : B Dozier, K Marte, J Hicks (Stringer from Baltimore) | Dozier gets a boost in OBP leagues, but Marte has SB upside he hasn't tapped into yet, plus he will qualify for 3 positions. Jordan Hicks throws hard, which is nice, but he walks too many, which is bad. He's risky if he doesn't figure out how to miss more bats and walk fewer batters, but because of SV+HD, he's enticing. Depends on how much you want to gamble on Dozier rebounding well and Marte actually taking that step forward. If you think you could get one of them cheap in the draft because others aren't believers, then that's the one I'd drop. If you want to force an answer from me, kick Marte for the tiniest playing time risk compared to Dozier. (Kevin Jebens) |
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat) | How good can Nate Pearson be, is there a comp you think is somewhat in the ballpark? (Ted from Ohio) | He's a tough comp (which can make him a tougher ranking). It's. bit of the Michael Kopech problem where literally nt starting pitcher in MLB actually throws this hard, so you end up with like Jordan Hicks or Edwin Diaz. (And hey, if he turns into Edwin Diaz, that's a great outcome). He's also JuCo guy so a little bit older than you think, and hasn't pitched significant time in even A-ball yet. So this is a long way of saying, there isn't really a comp but he could be extremely good. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2018-04-23 20:00:00 (link to chat) | I've seen Wander Javier's name pop up quite a bit in these chats (and I believe it is even a bit of a running joke now?) but to be honest I haven't paid too much attention to him as yet. However, I've now been offered him for my Jordan Hicks in my dynasty league so felt the need to ask the question.
Is this a deal I need to be doing given Wander's considerable upside vs Hicks value likely tied to being a future closer (which can be fickle)? (Warren from Australia) | Definitely a running joke. Sometimes I wonder if there's an entire cult of Dusty's lined up waiting to ask about him. I see Wander as a prospect who can be good across the board but not great at any one thing. Still needs to prove a lot. As for the deal, it's fair to take it. Just know there's a lot of fluctuation that can happen in the next three years. The good news is it's a reliever you're losing (and I don't consider them that valuable) (Eddy Almaguer) |
2018-02-05 12:00:00 (link to chat) | I've read varying reports on Jordan Hicks. Can you tell us what the BP team thinks of him? Thanks. (Ryan from Montreal) | Okay, lightning round time:
Just missed the 101, might have best non-Reyes in the Cards org, but higher reliever probability (Top 101 with Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2017-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jordan Hicks is getting a lot of attention around these parts, and I know you guys were aggressive in your ranking of him. Have you heard anything this year that would make you believe you weren't aggressive enough? (Bill from Saint Lou) | Not yet. Cardinals system was sneaky deep, but he has the stuff to outperform the ranking, sure. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2017-04-28 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Can you tell your thoughts on Jordan Hicks? (Ryan from Montreal) | We had him in our Cardinals Top 10: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=30958
Things haven't changed much thus far. He's a long way off, but there's ceiling there. (Craig Goldstein) |
2017-04-05 23:00:00 (link to chat) | What are you hearing about STL SP Jordan Hicks? Have read some very interesting pitch grades from big time sources lately. (a concerned parent from the internet) | The internet is no place for a concerned parent. Or, let's face it, anybody, really.
Hicks was a dude we chased upside on by tossing into the back of our StL top ten list, and given the muddle of options in that range that's something of an endorsement of the ceiling. Very good fastball, bigtime hook, not much in the way of mechanical consistency or a usable cambio yet. The performance in short-season wasn't great, but lots of raw material there. He'll be a guy to watch in his full-season debut this year. Also, let me just say that I am thrilled that baseball is back and that Chris Sale is a Red Sox and...just all of it, man. Get 'em, Sandy https://c.o0bg.com/rf/image_1200w/Boston/2011-2020/2016/07/04/BostonGlobe.com/Sports/Images/tai_20160704_redsoxVsRangers_sports_14.jpg?uuid=SVOuVEJFEeavwprHi5KLcw (Wilson Karaman) |
