2020-12-04 12:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for taking questions today. Where are you on Lewin Diaz? Does he get the 1st base job next year?
(Ryan from Montreal)
I think the Aguilar tender probably sends him back down to Triple-A for a bit depending on how the NL DH situation resolves itself. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-09-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bat only, who do you think has the better career, Lewin Diaz or Bobby Dalbec?
(The Colonel from Pasadena, CA)
Gimme Diaz. (Mark Barry)
2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know we're in Small Sample Size Land but how concerned are you of Evan White's 39% K rate and inability to hit the cheese? He has legit exit velos, hard hit & barrels on Statcast but his XBA and XSLG are terrible against all pitches. What does it all mean for his future -- he's 24. Bonus question: Evan White or Lewin Diaz?
(The Colonel from Pasadena, CA)
He's been a lot better of late. Obviously that much swing and miss is a concern, but the guy jumped Triple-A and almost certainly wouldn't have been up in the majors without that contract. At the same time that contract was given to him in part because of a belief in his ability to adapt. If you look at his splits from August 17 on, he's down to a 33% strikeout rate. Still not great, but much more palatable. I'm not all in on White, I never was, but I don't think we should make too much of this.

In purely bat terms I might take Diaz but I think White is a better overall player. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)He did so well in LIDOM and now the Marlins are starting him, do you think there's another level to Lewin Diaz?
(Jonah from Acme)
Maybe if the power really plays, and who can say what the state of the ball is week to week, but he strikes me still as a solid, but unspectacular regular. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-04-13 12:00:00 (link to chat)Lewin Diaz question. I've seen more than one "expert" comp his upside and profile to Jose Abreu, however, his rankings don't seem to reflect a player of that caliber. Is it just that the 1B/power profile doesn't warrant a lot of value? Or do you think the Abreu comp paints too rosy a picture?
(Keyser Soze from Utah)
A little of both probably. Abreu is like a 7 hit and Diaz's bat isn't that good, and if your bat isn't that good if it slips at all relative to the projection, you've got a pretty average first base profile. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-01-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would Lewin Diaz, Jaylin Davis, Prelander Berroa, and Kai-Wei Teng all be included here if not traded last year at the deadline?
(muldoonangus from South Dakota)
First two yes, in the next ten somewhere, Diaz higher by bit. The other two just miss. (AL Central Top 10 Chat)
2019-09-27 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any under-the-radar 1B prospects (ie not Andrew Vaughan) that you like for next year?
(Slippy Pete from The Sea)
It is difficult to talk me into the on the radar first base prospects a lot of the time. Maybe if you think Sherten Apostel is a first baseman. Lewin Diaz is perfectly fine too, but perhaps not under the radar enough (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-08-02 16:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances Alex Kirilloff ends up being the future starting first baseman for the Twins on the depth chart?
(Nathan from MN)
Kirilloff should be fine in a corner outfield spot. I think the Twins might have found their future first baseman in Lewin Diaz. (Jon Hegglund)
2019-08-02 16:00:00 (link to chat)Lewin Diaz was traded to the Marlins.
(cracker73 from Florida)
Crap. You're right. DELETE DELETE DELETE (Jon Hegglund)
2019-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think that Lewin Diaz is finally having a breakout? Will he possibly make mid-season top 100 lists?
(cracker73 from Florida)
I'd say it's really nice to see him do this and show this kind of power in the FSL, but he is repeating the league a bit and he isn't exactly young for the level (in terms of being a prospect). First base profiles are tough sells in these parts, so I think it's unlikely he'd land on our midseason list (which is a top 50). (Craig Goldstein)
2018-01-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Tristen Lutz, Brent Rooker, or Lewin Diaz for a dynasty league? I know fantasy isn't your forte, but from an offensive angle, who's bound to excel more?
(Adam from MIL)
If Rooker can stick as an outfielder (or at least enough to retain eligibility), he probably has the best balance of floor and upside in the bat. He has some big fans on staff. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-11-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I be excited more for Brent Rooker or Lewin Diaz? Why?
(Samuel from Minn.)
Probably Rooker, similar big raw, more advanced, should move faster, a better chance he isn't a first baseman. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-09-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)What can we expect from Lewin Diaz next year? Is he someone that can improve his hit tool enough to tap into that raw power in games and break out next season?
(JP from KC)
Getting out of the Midwest League will help (and he didn't lack for doubles), the raw power is huge and he's a good enough hitter he shouldn't have to sell out for it. I'm a tough sell on first-base only guys, but he's a breakout candidate. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-05-22 23:00:00 (link to chat)Got some questions on low level prospects who seem to be performing well in Taylor Trammell, Lewin Diaz & Tatis Jr. Has your opinion changed on any of these players if you had any coming into the season?
(Leonard from None of Your Business )
Trammell's an Athlete, and it's been encouraging that he's held his own with the stick so far given he was thought to be fairly baseball-raw coming into the draft. Advanced approach has stood out, even as a report I've heard indicates his swing mechanics are still pretty inconsistent swing-to-swing. Diaz is one of those dudes who was always going to be a slower burn, but early full-season returns are encouraging. Still very aggressive, but it's broadly the good kind of in-zone aggressiveness. He has massive power and pairs it with some intriguing contact skills. Tatis is grabbing the Midwest League by the horns and showing some real high-end projection already. He's probably done the most early on to improve his lot, though all three have had really nice starts to their seasons. (Wilson Karaman)
2015-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson. Are there any Low Minor players whose name is not yet widely recognized and you are looking to keep an eye on as the season concludes to possibly jump on for a name breakout next year?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Leaving out the '15 draftees, Victor Robles is probably the biggest helium guy of the year. Our Mark Anderson just tossed three 7's onto his ledger, linked below. Javier Guerra and Amed Rosario are a couple interesting shortstops. And while another one, Jorge Mateo, has gotten a lot of attention for his wheels, Rockies A-ball CFer Wes Rogers is a dude with a similar skillset & more polished hit tool. Potential SB beast. Jomar Reyes is a fan favorite of our scouting team. Amaurys Minier & Lewin Diaz in the Twins system are also both interesting raw power bats. Arms you'll be hearing a lot more about include Anderson Espinoza, Franklyn Kilome, Michael Kopech (though he's suspended), and the now-in-High-A Francis Martes (whose CB is just disgusting). (Wilson Karaman)
2015-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Let's get insanely obscure. What are your thoughts on Lewin Diaz? Where do you think he'll start the year and where do you think he finishes?
(Steve from Minnesota)
YOU CAN'T STUMP ME!

Another guy I haven't seen in person, but reports are that he has above-average pop and he has an advanced feel at the plate. Many, many years away from contributing, but that'd qualify as a sleeper prospect. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Chris & Nick, who do have as some of your favorite Low Minor, high ceiling prospects to keep an eye on for 2015, before their stock gains recognition this season, ex. Tapia last pre-season or Devers by its conclusion?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
I like what I've heard from some evaluators on Lewin Diaz. I unfortunately didn't get a chance this year to go down to Instructs (prior commitments) to see for myself, but there was some buzz on him. 2015 may be a bit early given where he is, but a name to definitely keep on the radar.
