2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Ned Yost just inconsistent or is he getting better?
(William from Spokane)
He's getting better. A crucial thing happened in September. The Aaron Crow Game (the cousin of The Jonny Gomes Game) showed the limits of Yost's rigid bullpen management. After that game, pitching coach Dave Eiland implored him to be more aggressive in using Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis.

One point to Yost's credit: He listened. The next night, Herrera pitched in the sixth. Davis pitched in the seventh.

Another point to Yost's credit: He did not waver. Because the Royals lost that next night, and Yost could have easily backslid into the routine. He didn't.

During the ALCS, multiple Orioles officials lamented to me their frustration that Yost had optimized his bullpen deployment. It was almost unfair, they said. And this was when the team wasn't even using Danny Duffy, who was their best pitcher for much of the summer.

So, in short, Yost has gotten better. He still does goofy things, like letting his No. 3 hitter bunt in the first inning. But they've found a horseshoe. At this point, it's Ned's world, and we're all just living in it. Hope you are all enjoying the #Yostseason. (Andy McCullough)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hiya Christina . . . thanks for chat. Breaking news from Yanks this morning is that Dave Eiland is out as pitching coach. So, would you infer that inconsistent Javy and A.J. are being pinned on him?
(dianagramr from NYC)
More's the pity, then, because the overlap between people who have employed Vazquez and Burnett and the people who have been frustrated by them is almost perfect. Maybe there's more involved, but if it's just a matter of tossing a head to the mob, it's a pity, and here's hoping he lands on his feet. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that AJ Burnett makes 30 starts a year for the life of his new contract?
(mattymatty from Philly)
Each year? Almost none. Burnett is not a healthy pitcher. He's talented, occasionally dominant, but has shown both physical and mental frailties. One of the more surprising things here for me is that Burnett was influenced strongly by pitching coach in coming to Toronto. He's pretty much tossing that aside, which I can't decide - does it say more about Dave Eiland or less about Brad Arnsberg? I don't like the contract and there's not even an opt-out to save them. There's probably one, maybe two years in there where they'll get the performance they want. (Will Carroll)

2009-10-28 17:00:002009 WS Game OneWith the hiring of Brad Mills, I wondered why teams were looking at Red Sox coaches rather than the time honored "steal from the best" strategy that is an annual tradition in football. The Yankees staff is made up of an odd mix of vets (Tony Pena) and lifers who don't have much profile (Mick Kelleher, Dave Eiland). The Phils are the same way, with only Pete Mackanin as a former manager, albeit the interim type, twice. Does this signal that having more specialized coaches with a lower profile, usually of the non-retread, ready-replacement type might be better? (Will Carroll)
