DateQuestionAnswer
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hardest player name for you to spell?
(dianagramr from NYC)
I can spell Doug Mientkiewicz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with the best of them, and I know my Derrek Lee, my Derrick Turnbow and my Derek Jeter, to say nothing of my Jarrod Washburn and my Jered Weaver and my Jaret Wright. I was a spelling bee champ in sixth grade, and also finished second in fourth and third in fifth.

The one that gets me is Mark Teahen. I ALWAYS spell it Teahan, and right now I just had to look again to see that I got it correct. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-10-23 16:00:00 (link to chat)I hear a lot about the smart decisions that the Yankees make with their money, but not a lot about all the poor decisions (Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, Kei Igawa, etc.). Does it make a whole lot of sense to congratulate them for big contracts when the opportunity costs are essentially nil?
(Christopher from Nashville)
I don't think anyone congratulates them for big contracts or lauds smart decisions. In fact, more people discuss their poor decisions than praise them for having a lot of money. (Eric Seidman)
2008-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would Dusty's decision have been acceptable or maybe even "correct" if the game was at the end of the season(something like 1 week or less to go) and the Reds were in contention(either tied for the lead or a game out)? As a philosophical matter when if ever is it ok to potentially overuse a pitcher like Dusty did?
(dokomoy from LA)
Yes. It's a continuum, which is why while I think Baker's use of Mark Prior down the stretch in 2003 was errant, it was also defensible. (His postseason usage was bad.) It's why I defend the Indians' use of a 21-year-old Jaret Wright in 1997. Everything has to be viewed through the lens of winning a championship. A May game in San Diego for a team like the 2008 Reds is far, far from a championship. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)I realize this is impossible to answer with any certainty, but do you have any gut feeling on Harden's health this year?
(tschiera from Brooklyn)
I think he'll throw 80-120 innings around a couple of DL stints. I put him in a category with guys like Prior and Wood, and suggest that a complete year off will help. Sometimes you just need to heal, and the cycle of surgery to rehab to pitching and back is wearing.
Troy Percival and Jaret Wright are two guys who come to mind who took a year or more off and came back with the ability to pitch. (Joe Sheehan)

2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft CoverageOne of the great things about being at BP is having great help just a few keyboard clicks away. I asked Rany, who did his fantastic series on draft history, if he remembers a draft that was better 11-20 than 1-10. Rany jumped into action for me, and found just one in 15 years: 2002.

Top Ten: B.J. Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis.
11-20: Hermida, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir, Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels, James Loney, Denard Span.

The best example is 1994, where Garciaparra, Konerko and Varitek went 12-14. Needless to say, the top 10 that boasted Paul Wilson, Ben Grieve, Todd Walker and Jaret Wright wasn't as good. (Bryan Smith)
