2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I know all will be revealed soon in your Dynasty list, but I’m in a bit of a conundrum with Griffin Canning in a keeper league. Considering the current state of his elbow but also his secure rotation spot, where would you place Canning among this batch of pitching prospects? (Monty from Chapel Hill) | We have Canning between Ian Anderson (69) and Daulton Varsho (70), though I would not oppose ranking him behind, say, Daniel Lynch (83). The elbow injury is concerning, but we are withholding a more significant drop at the moment. (Jesse Roche) |
2019-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Griffin Canning just Kyle Gibson 2.0? He generates a ton of whiffs on multiple pitches, but it seems to be a side effect of pitching outside the zone too often. (Dylan from Providence) | This seems overly kind to Gibson's ability to miss bats? Canning already generates a better K% than Gibson ever has. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How would you rank these pitchers in a dynasty format? Deivi Garcia, Ryan Weathers, Griffin Canning, Grayson Rodriguez, Jordan Balazovic, and Zac Gallen... thank you! (Nathan from Florida) | Man the Garcia talk has been extreme. I prrrobably slot him over Canning and Gallen and have it like this:
Garcia, Gallen, Canning, Weathers, Rodriguez, Balazovic (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-05-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Can I set and forget Griffin Canning in my lineup ROS? (Kennedy from Felix) | All the swinging strikes are pretty exciting, that's for sure. I think you can set and forget him at least until he starts facing teams for the second time. Even then, he's still good, just maybe not *this* good. (Mark Barry) |
2019-05-17 16:00:00 (link to chat) | It seems BP was the biggest on Griffin Canning. What are your impressions of him? (Freddy from Elm Street) | I like him as a solid SP long term. He seems to be struggling at times with location and going through that thing where hitters really tee off after they get a good look. Canning has a .494 OPS the first time through the order, and an 1060 the second time through (yes, these are tiny sample sizes). I see a mid-tier arm eventually. (Mike Gianella) |
2019-05-06 23:45:00 (link to chat) | Is Griffin Canning a starter long term? (Teddy from Atlanta) | He's another guy I saw do good things a bunch of times in college, and he was mid-90s with four pitches last year while speeding through Orange County's entire minor league system. Yeah he's a rotation guy, but for the cursed mound a full-traffic hour-and-a-half from the east side of Los Angeles. (Wilson Karaman) |
2019-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Logan Gilbert seem liable/well-suited to be on a fast-track a la Griffin Canning? And has he looked better than expected in the pros or simply fully back to normal from his low-velo stretch after being overused at the end of college? (Scootim from Wendy's) | We covered Gilbert in a Ten Pack earlier this year, and will have some updated notes on him coming on Friday. I don't think he'll move quite as fast as Canning, but Seattle isn't afraid to push guys and he has the polish to move faster than other 2018 first-rounders. His velocity has generally been 90-93, as you'll see from Brandon Williams' note at the end of the week. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-04-26 16:00:00 (link to chat) | How excited should I be as a Griffin Canning owner? (Ned from Nabisco) | You should be 83 percent excited. It's early, but he scaled way back on the walks, which is nice, and hasn't really taken a step back anywhere else. He's probably just an injury or two away, which is also nice, given his organization. (Mark Barry) |
2019-04-12 16:00:00 (link to chat) | who do you think are the next two/three impact pitchers to come up? (matt from MD) | Does Mike Soroka count? I know he already made his debut, so perhaps not, but I don't think it'll be too long before he works his way back into this Braves rotation.
If not then I think Jesus Luzardo is in the big leagues as soon as the A's are confident he's fully recovered from his injury. It wouldn't surprise me if Angels soon decide that they could really use Griffin Canning, who had a nice first start of the year at Triple-A. Whitley is the wild card - I could see him being up in a few weeks or staying down for 3 or 4 months. (Darius Austin) |
2019-02-04 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Griffin Canning make an impact in fantasy by 2020? (Kevin from Chanahon) | yes he could. (Mike Gianella) |
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Griffin Canning: is he approaching the upper echelon of pitching prospects, or do you worry about the walks? (Slippery Pete from Texas) | This was always in the tank if he could stay healthy. Gonna need to see it for a bit longer before he's a Tier 1 arm, but on his way. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
