2020-08-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jerry dipoto said he expects young players to be traded for one another this deadline. What's your favorite made up young player for young player trade? (Chris from Washington) | A fun question and one I should spend more time thinking about, but I'll revert to a deal I was talking about in a chat with some friends. It's not exactly "young players" but it is cheap players and that's probably more what Dipoto meant: I think Cleveland acquiring Mike Yastrzemski for Zach Plesac would be interesting, if they're truly upset with what Plesac did. They need the offensive and outfield help, and certainly have the pitching depth to do this.
I don't think it'd ever happen, to be clear. Cleveland values their pitching too much to consider it, but it was one that crossed my mind. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-09-06 12:00:00 (link to chat) | My kingdom for a scouting report on Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac! ;) (The Colonel from Pasadena, CA) | I suspect the league is going to catchup with Plesac next time around, as it's tough to live in the zone as much as he does with the fastball. There's a collection of fringe->average offerings and he could be useful utility arm, but he's probably not a top five starter for Cleveland long term. Civale I liked a bit as a prospect, I'm obligated to keep track of the CT dudes, and the cutter might be enough to keep his contact profile on the good side of average even if he never misses a ton of bats. I don't think he's quite THIS good, but no reason he can't be an average starter for a bit. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2019-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | There have been a few SP that came out of nowhere (at least for me) that look quite good (perhaps some BABIP luck or SSS). What OFP/Likely grades would you give: Zach Plesac, Zac Gallen, Aaron Civale, Jordan Yamamoto, Cal Quantrill. (The Colonel from Pasadena, CA) | Off the top of my head:
Gallen: 60/55
Yamamoto: 50/45
Quantrill: 60/50
I'm holding off on answering the Cleveland guys. I was just talking about them (and Bieber) and I need to dig in on what the coaching staff is doing to unlock these guys and if I view it as sustainable. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Everyone here is raving about Zach Plesac. Breaking ball is fringy but it's a crossfire delivery with plus command. Thoughts? (Kenny from Cleveland) | ENOUGH already with this Funke! I mean Plesac. I'm not expecting anything special. No. 5/6 starter maybe. Fits in the mold that Cleveland has with Bieber and Civale of rarely walking anyone. The question for me with that profile is whether they can miss bats and be around the zone that frequently. Bieber has made that adjustment. Not sure if Plesac's stuff works on the same level, personally. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-05-31 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi JP. 2 questions: Any tips on under the radar SP in the high minors w/2/3 upside? Already have gallen. Second, what are your thoughts on Zach Plesac? (pats1124 from Durham, NC) | Not to be glib, but I'm not sure there are under-the-radar guys in the upper minors with that kinda upside. The internet community has gotten so much better at this stuff. Maybe a guy like Kyle Muller? Tony Santillan? I still don't think Brusdar Graterol or Ian Anderson get enough love. As far as Zach Plesac is concerned, he's interesting because the velocity ticked up significantly. I'm skeptical of his ability to stick in the rotation because he lacks a true breaking ball, and straight fastball/changeup guys don't have a great recent track record in the big leagues. (J.P.
