2021-04-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Spencer Howard come back up as a starter?
(Buff from Colorado)
I hope so. Velasquez really belongs in the bullpen. The Phillies likely want to both manage Howard's innings and service time. I would expect him to be up as a starter full-time by midseason. (Jesse Roche)
2021-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you expect from AJ Puk and Spencer Howard?
(darielsantana from Santo domingo)
I doubt either break camp in the rotation (or even with the team). Puk did not have much command and his velocity was down in the low 90s in his spring debut. He may need a good bit of time to get where he needs to be. Ultimately, he may end up as a late-inning arm given his injury/command issues. Howard is a far better bet as a starter long term, and he has impressed this spring when healthy. A balky back likely sends him to the alternate site to start the season, but I expect him to return before long, especially with the likes of Matt Moore and Chase Anderson holding spots in that rotation. (Jesse Roche)
2021-03-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Spencer Howard makes the Phillies' rotation out of camp? Or is he destined for long relief and join it in time? Or... something else
(Derrick from PA)
I think it's unlikely he makes it out of camp without an injury or something to slow down Matt Moore/Vince Velasquez. I'm not sure it matters. So many rotations are going to see less than full seasons from starters coming off an abbreviated 2020 that whether someone is in the rotation or not when camp ends is more a matter of timing of inning than significance. (Craig Goldstein)
2021-02-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am in a dynasty/keeper league. I am looking to rebuild this year and play for the future. If I am looking at pitching, is it better to auction rookies (Pearson, Howard, Manning, Patino, etc.) or auction track record guys who are coming off injuries (Sale, Clevinger, Syndergaard, Sevarino, etc.)?
(JA from Virginia)
It depends on how contracts escalate in your league. Normally, I think it is best to target high-upside youngish talent at a low cost to lock up long-term. Of those you mentioned, Severino, Thor, Pearson, Patino, and Manning are excellent targets. We are less enthused about Spencer Howard. Both Sale and Clevinger are aging out of a rebuilders window. (Jesse Roche)
2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Craig, are the Phillies in as distinct a situation as I suspect? Their rebuild seems to lack the prospects and farm system that they had tried to create years ago by trading Cole Hamels, Ken Giles, and the rest of the former core. That has left them top heavy with great, but pricy, free agents and trades but little depth. Is it WEIRD that they haven't seen much more than Aaron Nola and Alec Bohm and maybe Rhys Hoksins emerge as future pieces? Because the Marlins look like they've lapped the Phillies.
(definitely not a BP writer who likes the Phillies from uh philadelphia but)
I think that's pretty fair. Matt Winkelman had a good thread on this recently, but it's something of a byproduct of missing on the draft as badly as they have. Hoskins was a great development, and Bohm looks like a win. Spencer Howard, too. But you're looking at maybe role players out of a first-overall pick in Moniak and a top-10 selection in Haseley. It's hard to create the type of perpetual motion machine that teams want when they're not hitting on those picks as at least everyday guys.

My biggest problem with Philly is that they lack depth at the major-league level. Farm systems are great, but only if they produce the depth I'm talking about or can be used to acquire it. The pitching beyond Nola and Eflin is concerning (though I'm hopeful for Howard long term), the top-end names you mention are great but there is a gaping hole if Realmuto leaves and no real plan to replace him in house (Marchan is up but probably a bit away).

It is a team built for now but struggling in the here and now. That's always going to be a tough team to swallow. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)From a fantasy perspective, for 2020, would you rather stash Spencer Howard or MacKenzie Gore?
(James from Boston)
For 2020 alone? Howard. I'm not convinced Gore gets much run. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-06-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you think the game restructuring (be is tournie or shortening in an obscure way) will change the value or bubble players/prospects? I immediately think of Kyle Wright, Logan Gilbert, Spencer Howard, Tucker, Lowe etc My concern is that these guys don't see the light of day then you are stuck with an anchor on a roster that is too good to cut but no one will pay for. Thanks and stay safe out there! -Stan
(coffeeguy8806 from Chicagoooo)
I think Spencer Howard making the Opening Day roster as the 5th starter was one of those not-so-secret secrets, so he's probably likelier to contribute in a present sense than the others. I've always held out for Tucker, but the more and more I talk to people, I get struck with the "The team isn't creating room for him for a reason" vibes. Same goes for Lowe.

I also think that the restructuring could be okay for bubble guys, especially if they expand rosters to 30+. Those guys that might've languished in Triple-A could see more opportunities with the likelihood of a minor-league season decreasing by the day. (Mark Barry)
2020-04-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I traded Mookie Betts for Spencer Howard, CJ Abrams, and Nate Lowe. Did I dominate the trade?
(Cyle from Sioux Falls)
It depends on league size/scoring, but I would not trade Betts for that package in most formats. Sorry :( (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who you got if you can only pick one...Spencer Howard or Tarik Skubal?
(Different Alias from Same Guy)
Howard. His stuff is simply better and he likely arrives early in 2020, though I do really like Skubal. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who you rather have in a dynasty fantasy league: Ian Anderson or Spencer Howard?
(BSK from Baltimore)
It's pretty close but I'd take Anderson right now. If you said you preferred Howard, I wouldn't scream at you until you cried, though. But I could. I have that ability. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give me the names of top prospects who are going to come up this year?
(Charlie from Atlanta)
The list is extensive. Here are top-50 prospects who likely will be in the majors at some point in 2020: Jo Adell, Gavin Lux, Luis Robert, MacKenzie Gore, Carter Kieboom, Dylan Carlson, Nick Madrigal, Jesus Luzardo, Dustin May, Brendan Rodgers, Nate Pearson, Casey Mize, Forrest Whitley, Alec Bohm, Cristian Pache, Ryan Mountcastle, Spencer Howard, and Matt Manning. There are obviously others, and even more who will surprise, but I'd wager these prospects will arrive at some point. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty keeper league....available farm guys are Jasson Dominguez, D. Carlson, S. Howard, G. Rodriguez, Torkelson, Hancock, Austin Martin, Bleday, R. Greene. Please rank...Thanks
(Mr. Fister from Arlington)
Open universe!

(1) Dylan Carlson, (2) Jasson Dominguez, (3) Spencer Torkelson, (4) Austin Martin, (5) Emerson Hancock, (6) J.J. Bleday, (7) Spencer Howard, (8) Riley Greene & (9) Grayson Rodriguez (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey thanks for the chat. How would you rank pitchers S Howard, Lodolo, J Gray, E Cabrera, and B Marquez??
(sykklone from IA)
Spencer Howard, gap, Josiah Gray, gap, Nick Lodolo / Edward Cabrera / Brailyn Marquez (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ok I got one more. How do you have these ranked. K Robinson, D Carlson, M Luciano, CJ Abrams, D Varsho, S Howard, and J Gray. Thanks.
(sykklone from IA)
I could refer you to the dynasty 101, but it was a collaboration so my valuations are a bit different. I rank them as follows: Marco Luciano / Kristian Robinson / Dylan Carlson, small gap, CJ Abrams, gap, Spencer Howard, gap, Daulton Varsho / Josiah Gray (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better, Tarik Skubal or Spencer Howard?
(ab257 from CT)
Howard. I am intrigued by Skubal but the injury concerns are present in a long term sense. The stuff is really fun, though. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the expected timeline for Spencer Howard to get a call up? What is a reasonable expectation for performance upon call up?
(Craig from Chicago)
Mid-June? I'm guessing there, I don't have a great sense if Philly would turn to him if someone is out for a bit or if they'd try to spot start like, Enyel De Los Santos for a little. I'd expect him to miss bats and miss the zone, not the type to dominate immediately. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-12-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Spencer Howard be equal to or even better than Nola going forward? Seems to me that the raw stuff is even better than Nola's, but maybe the ability to control it is not quite there yet. Thx
(bob from philly)
We ranked Nola as the 60th best prospect in baseball before 2015. Howard's probably a tier better than that at the moment, but that also wasn't my list (and I'm guessing 2015 Jarrett convinces me to have him 30 spots higher). But we're looking at outcomes, and Nola is basically a #2 starter who has already popped an ace level season. Howard has that level of stuff, but the command issues make me think he ends up more of a good number 3. (Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat)

2019-10-21 12:00:00 (link to chat)Can Spencer Howard become the next Aaron Nola----is the upside comparable in your mind? Thx
(bob from philly)
He's more of a stuff over command guy than Nola is, but I could see that kind of performance as an upside comp, yes. I think he will also be similarly volatile in the majors. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-10-18 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who surprised you the most out in Arizona?
(Adam from Austin, Texas)
Geraldo Perdomo surprised me a lot, showing quality defense and quality feel to hit from both sides of the plate. Jeremy Pena also surprised me with his defense and abilities at the plate. Pitching wise Sam Delaplane showed me why he had such a high K rate in the minor leagues thus far. I wasn't able to see Spencer Howard during the regular season because of his injuries but he sure looked the part in Arizona. (Steve Givarz)
2019-10-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)Spencer Howard likely to break camp with the Phils? Tinstapp or someone to get excited about?
(Quincy from Ames)
He could actually use a little consolidation time in the upper minors, and they are gonna hold him back for the service time anyway. But yes, read Steve's eyewitness from this week and then get excited. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-10-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Between Spencer Howard and Brusdar Graterol, who is the better fantasy prospect and who is the better real life prospect? PS, congrats on the new job!
(Jon from DC)
okay, look, it's prrrrrobably Howard in fantasy and maybe real life, because he's got a better chance to start and a fuller arsenal of pitches but if I'm picking one of the two give me Graterol's gas. His fastball is an incredible building block for a rotation and I know he's had some hiccups and missed time but...that's the arm I want. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-16 12:00:00 (link to chat)In terms of future ceiling and realistic likelihood of achieving it, who do you like better out of Grayson Rodriguez and Spencer Howard?
(Abel Archer from Travis AFB)
Howard is both closer to the majors and has the better present stuff. You could argue Rodriguez has more ceiling, but not significantly so. I think they are going to be fairly close on the 101 when it shakes out. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)In terms of future ceiling and realistic likelihood of achieving it, who do you like better out of Grayson Rodriguez and Spencer Howard?
(Abel Archer from Edwards AFB)
I think I'd roll with Howard (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Spencer Howard is awesome. I realize that's a statement and not a question. What do you think his impact can be as soon as 2020?
(Walt from Philly)
He's been fantastic. I think it's worth pointing out though, that he's missed time and has only accumulated 50 or so innings this year. That's going to make it hard to be a full time starter next season, and also means we've got a smaller sample size of his performance this season. That said, our reports on him and his stuff are good, and I'm a long-term believer. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Spencer Howard has been electric. What are you expectations for him moving forward?
(Aaron from PA)
Howard is someone I wish I would've been higher on prior to the season. I think he could be a legit SP2, and the stuff has seriously spiked in the past calendar year. He's currently profiling as a guy who can rack up strikeouts with quality ratios, and that's crazy-valuable as a starter right now. (JP Breen)
2019-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the latest injury news on the Phillies' Spencer Howard? Sidelined two months now with 'shoulder soreness'
(djbrown from Texas)
It's been reported that he's throwing down in their complex so I wouldn't expect it to linger too too much longer. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)In this day and age, how is it still possible to have prospects out with 'unknown' injuries for a prolonged stretch? (Vidal Brujan, Spencer Howard etc..)
(djbrown from TExas)
Well, "unknown" is often just a side effect of "undisclosed." I don't know that it's our right to get into every players medicals anyway, but enough people usually know what the injuries are at the time. They're just not talking about it. (Craig Goldstein)
2018-05-25 12:15:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite pop up arms so far this season? Jalen Beeks and Denis Santana come to mind.
(Charlie from Sunnyvale)
I mentioned Paddack just before, but guys like Suarez who was mentioned earlier in the chat...Francisco Morales and Spencer Howard from Philly. Bryse Wilson in Atlanta. Oh and speaking of Atlanta, we need to be talking about Touki Toussaint like we used to. (Craig Goldstein)
