When looking through reports are there physical attributes or scout type words that you look for when comparing deeper/younger prospects. IE physical projection vs already filled out. Thanks! For deeper/younger prospects, I look for bat speed, bat-to-ball ability, raw power, and raw speed. In fact, the physical aspects that may be the easiest to scout for these prospects are what draws my eye. Things like strike zone judgment, plate discipline, all-fields ability, spin recognition, etc. are easier to develop over time and are extremely variable for young hitters. As for pitchers, I want to see present fastball velocity and at least one promising secondary. Command and repertoire depth take time to develop. Athleticism and a good frame (6-foot-2 to 6-foot-5) is also ideal. Bigger/smaller often equates to relief risk in some shape or form. A clean, repeatable delivery is a plus, while balancing against deception. I do not really ascribe by the physical projection mantra. It really needs a lot of context as some body types, while thin, are simply not likely to add impact weight as they mature. Guys like Triston McKenzie, for instance, are not going to suddenly not be pencil thin. I like high-waisted, long-legged, and broad-shouldered frames. An ideal scout frame is Fernando Tatis Jr. I am all about a foundation to build from rather than hoping that foundation eventually develops. This really should be an article for the prospect team. Even with a 26 percent K rate, his overall performance at 18 seems amazing. (Keith from Farmington, CT) | What he's doing at 18 is amazing. He's went from being a borderline prospect when the White Sox traded him to a legitimate top prospect. He needs to cut down on the strikeouts but the power is real, two hardest hits I've seen all year have been by him.

(David from Not Sure) | Sierra's a polished glove, good shot to stick, the power was more Appy elevation than actual raw pop and he's gonna need some refinement at the plate. Tats is less likely to stick, but has more offensive upside. We actually had a fun internal conversation about it Tatito was Vladito and vice versa, what their respective national profiles would be.

I wouldn't get too caught up in the Appy HR total, as he was appropriately exposed as Not Manny Ramirez in the NYPL. But he's got the goods to develop into a real good SS, with a stick to be valuable at the position. Tatis is veeeery likely a 3B, and he's already shown a bunch of aggressive swing-and-miss, but there's a quality fantasy bat in here somewhere. Always bet on big-league bloodlines when in doubt, and take a last-round flyer if your league goes 175-200 deep - maaaybe 150 if you're feeling salty? (Wilson Karaman) |

It's always difficult to assess hitters in the low minors that are nearly half a decade away from the majors. I think you have to start off by gauging the defense. Can this hitter stick at shortstop? If yes, then it becomes about future projection, not necessarily scouting the stat-line. Park factors and environments matter too. (George Bissell) |
