BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2018 Imagine a toolbox filled to the brim with the some of the best tools you’ve ever seen, but every time you try and hit a nail with that top-quality hammer, you miss. Maybe you'll eventually hit that nail, maybe you won't. Maybe you're Michael Gettys.
2016 The toolsy but raw Gettys did fascinating things in his full-season debut. His 21 outfield assists tied for the Midwest League lead, and he turned more double plays than the entire outfields of five teams. On the downside, his quick bat remains unscuffed by baseballs—he struck out in 31 percent of his plate appearances. Although concerns about the hit tool are softened by youth, we all get older, and his ability to adjust will determine how far he goes. The athletic center fielder possesses undeniable physical talent, but his inability to solve even A-ball pitchers makes those tired Drew Stubbs comparisons that have dogged him since he was drafted all the more sobering. Still, there is plenty to dream on, and Stubbs did get his face on some baseball cards.
2015 The Padres popped Gettys in the second round out of a Georgia high school, then signed him away from a verbal commitment to the University of Georgia. A two-way player who some felt could have been drafted as a pitcher, Gettys shows electric tools as a position player. His range and arm in center field are excellent. He has quick hands at the plate and drives the ball with authority when he makes contact, which isn't often enough, especially against anything other than a fastball. Speed and defense will get Gettys to the big leagues, with his eventual role determined by how well he makes adjustments as a hitter along the way.

2017-04-05 23:00:00 (link to chat)Could Michael Gettys become one of the best fielders in baseball?
(Justin from NY)
I dunno if I'd be willing to go that far on him, though I'll get my first looks at him since August next week. Certainly the raw tools/physicality of an above-average centerfielder were there last summer, though wasn't convinced on the instincts. Stay tuned, he's one of the returners to the league I'm most excited to see re: off-season development. FWIW here's what I wrote about him last year: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=30231 (Wilson Karaman)
2016-06-21 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Gettys giving us reason to believe long term, or is there still a lot of reason for skepticism?
(Tim from San Diego)
There's plenty to like with Gettys. The main reasons for skepticism would be: (1) he has a lot of steals this year, but he's also been caught stealing quite a bit, and (2) his OBP is being propped up by a lot of HBPs, which might not be sustainable if he starts getting out of the way or if those HBPs take their toll and either put him on the DL or keep him banged up enough to prevent him from performing up to his capacity. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-05-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)How legitimate is Michael Gettys' strong start to the season? In dynasty formats, he's a high ceiling power/speed outfielder, right?
(fawkesmulder from Orange County, CA)
The speed is legitimate. I'd like to see a somewhat lower strikeout or more power (not necessarily both) before buying into the power. The ceiling is high; with prospects like this for me the questions are always 1) will that power translate and 2) will there be enough on baseability (yeah, I made up a word during the chat, what of it?) to make him a top-tier everyday player as opposed to a second division regular with a lot of speed, with all kinds of outcomes in the middle of these two extremes. The jury is still out for me. (Mike Gianella)
2015-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Michael Gettys' season thus far? Impressive to be holding his own in full season ball?
(padremurph from Los Angeles)
I would disagree that Gettys is holding his own (statistically, at least). That said, he's young and raw; his production isn't going to matter for years. (R.J. Anderson)
2015-03-25 19:00:00 (link to chat)Of course I don't expect you to offer thoughts on all of these guys, but since I don't know who you got a look at, I hope you'll excuse me listing several you might have info on: Greg Bird, Michael Gettys, Magneuris Sierra, Gilbert Lara. Thanks!
(Andrew from St. Louis)
Bird- keeps hitting, but I'm still not sold. Passive approach, no real defensive value, swing can get long
Gettys- phew, tools, man. Guy has a legit 8 arm, 7 speed, plus raw pop. But, I'm not sold he can hit with that swing. His bat is not in the zone for very long.
Lara- kind of a weird, choppy swing. First movement is down toward his back hip, but he makes it work. Unbelievably strong, but he won't be able to hit anything above the belt, so the plate disc will have to be an asset.

I haven't seen Sierra yet, but should get plenty of looks at him in the MWL this year. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)What prospect(s) have surprised you the most this spring with their #rig?
(RIP Jason from Chicago)
I knew Mazara had #rig but he showed copious amounts of rig during the week. Michael Gettys showed flashes of rig. He chased after balls in center like he was angry the ball dare even think about landing in the outfield. Rangers camp in general showed #rig everywhere. (Ryan Parker)
2015-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Ryan, who do you have as some of your favorite Low Minor, high ceiling prospects to keep an eye on for 2015, and are looking to jump on before their stock gains recognition this season, ex. Tapia last pre-season or Devers by its conclusion?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Forrest Wall and Michael Gettys. (Ryan Parker)

2015-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any hitters yet unknown to general public catch your eye this spring which will soon be well known?
(Rick from NYC)
Define public. If you mean this ESPN crowd then Tapia and Mazara.

If you mean the BP crowd then Forest Wall and Michael Gettys

Here's some real unknowns that I saw and just kept writing things like "kid is a ballplayer, all he does is hit, love how he plays, etc..."
Josh Van Meter- Padres
Austin Cousino- Mariners
(Not Junior) Spivey- Rangers (Ryan Parker)
2015-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you have higher actual realizable prospects for….Michael Chavis or Michael Gettys?
(Nate from Florida)
Chavis likely Gettys is making the right improvements so far.

So it's like a race, Chavis got the head start but Gettys just realized he was running with a boulder tied to his feet. (Ryan Parker)
2015-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will Michael Gettys be Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, or just Carlos Gomez?
(Philip from San Diego)
When is "just Carlos Gomez" a bad thing? (Ryan Parker)
2015-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which NL West 2014 Draft bat has the best fantasy baseball impact? Forrest Wall, Michael Gettys, Alex Verdugo, or Marcus Wilson?
(tlw08 from The Great White North)
Gettys is the biggest upside. Wall is the safest bet. Verdugo needs to be run through the full season gauntlet, because it's been a Jekyl & Hyde act over the last 18 months and we don't really know what we have here, yet. Wilson has five-tool potential, but is a slow developmental burn. (NL West Top 10s With Nick Faleris)
