2020-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Marlins have had a nice story in 2020 and are still alive in the NL playoffs. Who are your 3 top (pleasant) surprises for you from their organization? And, if Sandy Alcantara is not included among those 3 players, could you please evaluate his progress from being a Cardinals' signee?
(ironcityguys from daBurgh)
It basically all has to be on the pitching side, right? I was revisiting that Ozuna deal and they got him and Gallen (and Sierra) out of it. That's not bad at all. Can I include Gallen? I know they flipped him for Chisholm, but he really blossomed in Miami before the deal. If not, it's hard to criticize what they've gotten out of Pablo Lopez and Brian Anderson.

Regarding Alcantara, I think I'm most impressed with the refinement to his control. He's really around the zone a lot, and hasn't always been that way. He's also become a lot more consistent, generally. I saw him a bunch last year and one inning could unravel him. Small sample, but it didn't seem to be the case this year. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-10-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sandy Alcantara was a horse this year. Too many IP for a young pitcher? What do you see as his future?
(ironcityguys from urban area)
Ehhh. He made 32 starts and was good enough to go deep enough into games and accumulate the innings. He had ~160 innings in 2018, so this doesn't seem like a drastic jump for someone who has the frame for it. I think he's a solid 3 most of the time, maybe a 3/4? He had some ugly outings but someone you close your eyes and at the end of the year, it is pretty good. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can BP develop a weekly planning tool for determining which Sandy Alcantara will show up?
(Jim from Chicago)
If only. I saw him in person in DC last week and he was really good...until he wasn't. I don't think he's consistent inning to inning, much less on a weekly basis. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-04-12 16:00:00 (link to chat)12 team, Roto, 5x5, dynasty keeper (no penalty for keepers)... Who wins: Carlos Correa, Sandy Alcantara for Al Mondesi, Forrest Whitley. Thanks!
(James from New Hampshire)
I think we're looking at the very real possibility that Mondesi is a better fantasy option than Correa, and Whitley is so far ahead of Alcantara for me that Mondesi doesn't have to beat Correa. (Darius Austin)
2019-03-15 16:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you project to make the Marlins rotation?
(Flex F Fox from San Diego)
I don't like to admit it, but I kinda sorta really like Trevor Richards. He started to strike dudes out down the stretch and had a 3.57 DRA in 126 1/3 innings. Otherwise, I'm guessing Urena, Chen, Straily and then maybe Pablo Lopez until Caleb Smith comes back or Sandy Alcantara is ready? (Mark Barry)
2019-02-18 16:00:00 (link to chat)You like Sandy Alcantara and Jonathan Loaisiga in a dynasty?
(Jenn from Athens GA)
It's relatively close, but I'll take Loaisiga. Seems to have three pitches well above average. His walk rate at the MLB level wasn't good, but Alcantara's been worse, above 6.0 BB/9. They're both young enough to figure that out, though. (Kevin Jebens)
2018-06-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Sandy Alcantara's lower K rate in AAA was the result of coaching him to be more of a pitcher vs. thrower or is he bound to be lit like a pinball machine?
(Tyler Durden from LA)
Alcantara has had such a weird pro career the least couple seasons. I think the stuff is too good to consistently square, but everything else is pretty up in the air. I'm not one to get too worked up over the results of a dozen starts though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-02-28 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some ETA 2018 prospects that could help a contender in dynasty? Like outside the top 25 on the 101 (already rostered). Thanks
(Jojo from Sd )
Not sure if you mean past 25th overall or outside the top 100? Woodruff, C.Burnes, Gohara, Y. Chirinos, Dustin Fowler, Chris Shaw, Sandy Alcantara, C. Stewart, W.Adames, Jose Adolis Garcia, R.Arozarena, R.Armenteros, T.Mahle. (Eddy Almaguer)
2017-11-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sandy Alcantara... whatchoo got?
(Cole Whittier from Pasadena, CA)
Springfield is a terrible place to pitch, and the stuff actually got better as the year went on. Still a decent chance he's a reliever long term, but don't think his stock has moved much from pre or mid season. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-04-05 23:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty rebuild (25 man x 20 team) where prospects must be carried on roster. Which of the following acquired assets have highest upside/best chance to be "pillars" for the next championship?? ' Bats: Gallo, Josh Bell, Vlad Jr., Nick Williams, Brad Zimmer, Willy Adames, Mateo, Robles, Ames Rosario, Corey Ray Arms: Bundy, Reyes (post injury), Matt Manning, Sandy Alcantara, Walker Buehler
(Loria's Cousin Fazzie from Milwaukee,, Wi)
In terms of cornerstone ceiling, I'd put Gallo, Vlad Jr., Robles, and Reyes in that category of guys I could see topping out as top-50 players. Maybe Ray too? There's varying degrees of risk baked in there - for instance, Gallo's more likely Russell Branyan than he is Babe Ruth. Vlad Jr.'s like 11 and carries the associated developmental risk, etc. It's a solid collection of talent for a rebuild with a window 3-4 years out. (Wilson Karaman)
2017-01-18 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Bret, I could use some help on deep dynasty assets for a prospect draft. 20 team dynasty league, 150+ prospects owned. I have two upcoming picks and I've put together a list of 10 guys that I'm having a terrible time differentiating. My list is: Jake Bauers, Jahmai Jones, Lucas Erceg, Christin Stewart, Taylor Trammell, Alec Hansen, Walker Buehler, Sixto Sanchez, Justin Dunn, Sandy Alcantara I was thinking about one hitter and one pitcher but really I just want the two best values from that list. How would you rank the top 3-5 in case a few get taken between my picks? Obviously some of them are closer to the majors and some are much farther away which is why I'm struggling. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
(treynay3 from Grand Rapids)
I'd go Jones, Alcantara, Erceg, Dunn. (Bret Sayre)
2017-01-18 20:00:00 (link to chat)What is your opinion of Sandy Alcantara? Starter? Reliever?
(Blake from Med Hat)
Could be a pretty dynamic starter, but still a ways away. (Bret Sayre)
2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Sandy Alcantara some kind of diamond in the rough? His name seems to be popping up a lot, recently..
(Ron from Texarkana)
I'm not sure he's a diamond in the rough. He's gotten a lot of love on this site, as he's shown some big, big stuff on the mound. The fact that he's in the Cardinals' system certainly helps. People rightly give St. Louis the benefit of the doubt when it comes to developing pitchers. (J.P. Breen)
2016-08-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the next big prospect nobody is talking about?
(Kyle from Tampa)
One of the guys I fought to include in our top 50 is Sandy Alcantara. He's another quality arm in the Cardinals system. He's gotten beat up in High-A since his promotion but he's 3 years younger than most of the league. The fastball is a 7 and has quality movement to it. The changeup features quality armspeed and he has feel for the pitch. The determining factor will be the curve but it has flashed average for me. If he continues to make adjustments you're looking at a possible #2 starter for the Cardinals in a couple of years. Watch out. (James Fisher)
2016-06-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Higher ceiling: Sandy Alcantara or Junior Fernandez?
(James Fisher from Peoria, Ill)
Couple of question in the queue about Sandy Alcantara and Junior Fernandez so I'll tackle them together. I've seen them both and would take Sandy Alcantara if given the choice. He is the more projectable guy at this point and the command will come because the delivery is cleaner. (James Fisher)
2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has there been any news updates on Yadier Alvarez, and do you like him or Sandy Alcantara more for a dynasty league?
(Ron from Texarkana)
Haven't heard much on Alvarez lately. I'll probably take Alcantara right now because of less volatility but Alvarez much higher upside. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-05-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Highest upside below AA, non Espinosa/Brendan Rodgers category
(Matt from San Diego )
There's a ton of guys below AA that I could go with here but I Sandy Alcantara has a chance to be a monster for the Cardinals. He's long, lean and still growing. The delivery is clean and he has a plus plus fastball with secondary offerings that grade out above average. (James Fisher)
