2020-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)After the abbreviated 2020 spring It would appear that Franklin Barreto is ready to take over at 2B full time. Are parts of his game that are seriously lacking that the A’s feel a platoon with Tony Kemp is necessary or do you think they introduced this concept as a ploy to push Barreto’s performance? Thanks for your insights.
(CubbieBear from CHI-TOWN)
That all seems a little optimistic though I would be thrilled to see Barreto run with it. He's never been able to show the patience in the majors that he has in the minors (small sample, but relevant at this stage). I don't think he needs to be platooned but the A's are compiling depth and Kemp is a useful piece as a platoon, and allows for less of a dropoff if Barreto doesn't turn out as hoped. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)One unsettled job competition is 2B in Oakland. I've picked up Franklin Barreto in a few places, thinking he might earn a full-time job and make good on his pedigree (he's still just 23 or 24). What do you think of his prospects for 2020? And in a dynasty, would you rather take a flier on him or someone with a safer job like Isan Diaz?
(Pete from Providence)
Barreto likely receives plenty of playing time this year, but he is far from guaranteed a full-time job, especially with Tony Kemp and Jorge Mateo potentially siphoning off plate appearances. I do like Barreto as a late flier in most formats. He has plus raw power and speed. Just unclear if he will ever make enough contact to stay afloat. Barreto is still young, though (just turned 24 in February), so I am holding out some hope for fantasy relevance as soon as 2020.

That said, I do prefer Isan Diaz who has a more secure role (granted, it comes with a short leash) and plenty of upside himself (think .260/25/5). (Jesse Roche)
2018-06-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Kyle Tucker getting a call up soon? Should I be stashing him in my league? Once he graduates, who replaces him in the Astros top 10?
(Carl from Fresno)
Carl, I think you've gotten the drift that I'm not an prospects guy. But I do kinda know the Astros. Not enough to be able to help you with the Top 10--that's a Jeffrey question, ask him tomorrow at 1 PM--but I do at least know who Tucker is. I would not rule out a callup--when your second best OF is Tony Kemp, you have an issue, and that's nothing against Kemp--but Derek Fisher's been better in Fresno (granted, he didn't do so well in Houston), so I'd expect him to get called up next. (Rob Mains)
2018-07-26 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Tony Kemp a player you could see the Astros moving? Would he become a full time player? Would he succeed?
(Roger from New York)
Absolutely I do, and I'm not sure he'd be a full-timer on most teams. I wasn't super high on him when I wrote him up for this year's Baseball Prospectus Annual, but I love how he's reaching base this season. He could be a fun fit for the Royals if Whit Merrifield moves on, and could definitely start for the Marlins. Regardless, I enjoy watching him play because of his combo of skills. (Bryan Grosnick)
2017-09-18 23:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson who are five of your favorite prospects that you personally just like?
(Adniel from nyc)
Edwin Rios, Tony Kemp, Garrett Hampson, Rogelio Armenteros, Jose Trevino. How's THAT for a collection? (Wilson Karaman)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Aaron Judge running as fast as he could ran into Tony Kemp, how far would Kemp fly?
(Vince from Saratoga)
I believe if that were to happen we'd have a superhero the likes of which we've never seen. Or villain if you hate the Astros and Yankees, which I know many of you do. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance Tony Kemp can be an MLB regular?
(Grizz from Chi)
Yeah, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it. He's a really smart hitter with plus speed, but there's no power, and the defensive profile is fringe-average because of so-so hands and a below average throwing arm. I like him more as a speed weapon off the bench, but weirder things have happened. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Tony Kemp for real? He seems to play a mean defense and his bat has been on fire all year. What can we expect from him in the majors and when do you think he'll get the call? Thanks!
(Mark from Houston)
I think this is a reasonable take http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=90 ... role guy, good, but not an everyday player. (Harry Pavlidis)
2015-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which of these "fringe" prospects can you see playing beyond this label and their division 2 projections and being above average regulars some day? Mac Williamson, Preston Tucker, Darnell Sweeney, Tony Kemp, Devon Travis?
(GI JIM from Uranus)
Do you remember the seen in 30 rock when Kenneth is Tracey's work wife and he gives him the plan for the day and then Tracey says "I'M NOT DOING ANY OF THAT!" ?

That's how I feel about the names you just mentioned. Sweeney and Kemp the best of the bunch though. (Christopher Crawford)
