BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Muñoz repeated Double-A to start last year, and repeated his habit of beginning the year on the DL (hamstring), but then proceeded to rake his way into a Triple-A promotion. He added outfield to his résumé in Nashville, mostly in center field, but he also showed up for a few games in the corners, and he is strong-armed enough that he could work in right. The issue isn't his defense at short, but that his bat won't earn its way into a major-league starting lineup without more walks, more pop or both. If you're light on bat, your options are to be Andrelton Simmons with the glove or to play everywhere so you manager can combine two bench spots into one and carry a sixth lefty in the bullpen. Muñoz is not Andrelton Simmons, so he appears to be taking the latter path to the majors.
2017 Yairo Munoz saw plenty of time around the horn in 2016, but it’s his offensive positioning that needs refining if he’s going to turn a slap-happy stroke into a viable home run rate.
2016 Benjamin Franklin famously said, “He that can have patience can have what he will.” Munoz could test the A's in this regard, as he has all the tools to stick at shortstop, but questions remain about his focus after he committed 34 errors between Low- and High-A. He has a plus arm in the field and enough range for the position, but his sloppy footwork might cause him to shift to third as he advances. He'll show plus speed at times, though this is likely to play closer to average as he fills out his frame, so he won't be able to compensate for mistakes that way. But Franklin wasn't just thinking of Munoz's defense when he told us about patience; the prospect's approach at the plate needs work as well. He's got good feel for the barrel and above-average raw strength but hits off his front foot too often. Then again, Franklin also said, “Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out," so maybe Munoz is just doing his best in the face of conflicting coaching.

2018-05-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)What’s your take on Yairo Munoz? Stats in brief MLB stint not great but never easy when you’re only getting limited opportunities here and there. Gone back to AAA and has performed strongly. Decent dynasty asset?
(Warren from australia)
Ehhhh, probably more of a utility guy than anything else. (Nicolas Stellini)
2015-12-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Of the following crew of current shortstops how many, if any, can stick at the position: Franklin Barreto, Chad Pinder, Yairo Munoz, Richie Martin, and Mikey White?
(Jack from San Jose )
This is a GREAT question. We are starting this chat off with a GREAT question. I would say all but Pinder have a realistic chance of staying at shortstop. If I was betting on which ones would, however, I'd say Martin and Barreto. Pinder will play it as a utility guy, and the same to White, but I can't see it regularly. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)I've been hanging on to my last $1 forever in my dynasty league. Here are a few guys who have risen up my list. Looking for most upside here. Who should I spend my $1 on? Domingo Acevedo,Jordan Patterson,Kevin Padlo,Wilson Contreras,Harold Ramirez,Johan Mieses,Chad Pinder,Isan Diaz,Willy Garcia,Yairo Munoz
(TheDave from AR)
I'd throw that dollar on Isan Diaz, Wilson Contreras and Yairo Munoz in that order. (Mauricio Rubio)
