- Brewers RP Jim Henderson notched his 16th save by firing a perfect ninth inning.
- Brewers SP Wily Peralta allowed just one run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings.
- Giants SP Matt Cain allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings.
(62-50) Dodgers - 1 at 5 - Cardinals (66-46)
(69-45) Braves - 2 at 1 - Nationals (54-59)
- Braves SP Julio Teheran spun six innings of one-run ball.
- Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez allowed two runs over seven innings but suffered a loss.
- Nationals OF Bryce Harper singled and launched a solo homer.
(49-63) Cubs - 8 at 9 - Phillies (51-61)
- Phillies SP Kyle Kendrick was charged with five runs – four earned – over six frames.
- Cubs SP Edwin Jackson was smacked around for seven runs on 10 hits and two walks over just five innings.
- Phillies 1B Darin Ruf doubled in a run and also ripped a solo homer.

- Tigers SP Justin Verlander allowed one run in eight innings while striking out seven.
- Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI against the Indians on Tuesday.
- Tigers OF Don Kelly went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
- Indians SP Justin Masterson allowed five runs over seven innings in a loss.
(64-50) Rangers - 8 at 3 - Angels (51-61)
- Rangers SP Yu Darvish went 7 innings allowing three runs for the win.
- Angels SP Garrett Richards was decent striking out five over six innings while allowing three runs.
- Rangers base runners ran wild stealing six bases off Angels C Chris Iannetta including three from OF Leonys Martin.
(57-55) Yankees - 2 at 3 - White Sox (42-69)
- White Sox SP Chris Sale allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings while striking out six.
- White Sox OF Alejandro De Aza went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Yankees SP Hiroki Kuroda allowed three runs over seven innings.
- Whoite Sox 2B Gordon Beckham went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
(49-61) Twins - 7 at 0 - Royals (57-53)
(69-46) Red Sox - 15 at 10 - Astros (37-75)
- Red Sox OF Shane Victorino went 3-for-5 with four runs scored.
- Astros SP Jordan Lyles lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits in a loss.
- Astros OF Robbie Grossman went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
- Red Sox DH David Ortiz went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
(53-60) Blue Jays - 7 at 2 - Mariners (52-61)
- Mariners SP Felix Hernandez suffered his worst start in over a month, allowing six runs -- three earned -- over five innings.
- Blue Jays SS Jose Reyes went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
- Blue Jays SP Josh Johnson twirled five shutout innings in a victory.
Inter League:
(64-48) Athletics - 1 at 3 - Reds (62-51)
- Reds SP Mat Latos went scoreless over 7 1/3 innings giving up just four hits and three walks.
- Athletics C Derek Norris hit a pinch-hit home run against closer Aroldis Chapman.
- Reds OF Jay Bruce went 1-for-4 with a home run.
- Athletics SP Dan Straily allowed two runs in four innings.
(66-46) Rays - 1 at 6 - Diamondbacks (57-55)
- Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt posted an unusual line, walking three times, stealing a base and scoring two runs.
- Diamondbacks OF Cody Ross hit a three-run homer.
- Diamondbacks SP Wade Miley pitched seven innings of one-run ball.
- Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson was shelled for five runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.
(62-51) Orioles - 4 at 1 - Padres (52-61)
- Orioles SP Bud Norris was solid again allowing just one run over 6 innings for the win.
- Orioles RP Jim Johnson picked up his MLB leading 39th save of the year.
- Orioles OF Adam Jones blasted his 23rd homer of the year in front of his hometown.
Player Transactions:
National League:
- Padres purchased the contract of SS Ronny Cedeno from High-A Lake Elsinore.
- Cubs sent OF Julio Borbon outright to Triple-A Iowa.
- Mets placed RHP Bobby Parnell on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 31, with a herniated disk in his neck.
- Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Giants have signed left-hander Ted Lilly to a split contract.
- Phillies designated OF Laynce Nix for assignment.
- Phillies activated OF Domonic Brown from the 7-day disabled list.
- Nationals purchased the contract of RHP Tanner Roark from Triple-A Syracuse.
- Nationals optioned LHP Xaiver Cedeno to Triple-A Syracuase.
- Phillies purchased the contract of LHP Cesar Jimenez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
- Cubs optioned RHP Eduardo Sanchez to Triple-A Iowa.
American League:
- Mariners released OF Jason Bay.
- Orioles optioned INF Danny Valencia to Triple-A Norfolk.
- Orioles activated 2B Brian Roberts from the paternity leave list.
- Mariners recalled RHP Carter Capps from Triple-A Tacoma.
- Blue Jays designated RHP Michael Schwimer for assignment.
- Blue Jays activated LHP J.A. Happ from the 60-day disabled list.
- Mariners optioned RHP Tom Wilhelmsen to Triple-A Tacoma.
- Indians recalled RHP Matt Langwell from Triple-A Columbus.
- Indians placed RHP Corey Kluber on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right middle finger.
- Angels optioned RHP Daniel Stange to Triple-A Salt Lake.
- Angels recalled INF Grant Green from Triple-A Salt Lake.
- Rays transferred RHP Alex Cobb from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Injury Updates:
National League:
- Nationals RP Ross Ohlendorf played catch Tuesday and reported no issues with his right shoulder.
- Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Wednesday.
- Cardinals prospect SP Tyrell Jenkins underwent season-ending surgery Monday on his right shoulder.
- Mets SP Jon Niese (shoulder) will make his third minor league rehab start Tuesday with Double-A Binghamton.
- Dodgers OF Matt Kemp said Monday that his sprained left ankle is progressing well.
- Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez reported continued improvement in the range of motion with his right shoulder Tuesday.
- Diamondbacks 2B Willie Bloomquist (hand) was cleared to take ground balls and play catch on Tuesday.
- Padres OF Carlos Quentin (knee) is likely out until at least Friday and could require a stint on the disabled list.
- Padres SP Cory Luebke (elbow) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday.
- Phillies 1B Ryan Howard (knee) has not yet been cleared to hit.
- Phillies SP Roy Halladay (shoulder) threw a five-inning bullpen session Monday.
- Pirates OF Travis Snider (toe) played catch Tuesday.
- Braves C Gerald Laird (kidney stone) could be activated from the disabled list as early as Saturday.
- Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is tentatively scheduled to start playing catch around August 22.
- Rockies SP Roy Oswalt (hamstring) will attempt to throw a simulated game sometime in the "near future."
- Giants OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) is expected to return around September 1.
- Braves OF Jason Heyward is considered day-to-day after leaving Tuesday's game with a muscle strain in his neck.
- The Rockies are considering placing OF Carlos Gonzalez on the disabled list due to his sprained right middle finger.
- Brewers SP Marco Estrada (hamstring) will start on Wednesday in San Francisco in place of the injured Tom Gorzelanny (elbow).
- Diamondbacks C Miguel Montero received an epidural for his ailing lower back last Friday.
- Braves SP Paul Maholm (wrist) threw a bullpen session Tuesday.
American League:
- Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (shoulder) threw off a mound at about 60-65 percent effort on Tuesday evening.
- Rangers SP Neftali Feliz (elbow) will move his minor league rehab assignment to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.
- Rangers SP Colby Lewis needs surgery to remove bone spurs from his hip and will miss the rest of the season.
- Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) has returned from his rehab assignment, but remains on the 15-day disabled list.
- Tigers RP Octavio Dotel (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A Lakeland.
- Yankees SP Michael Pineda (shoulder) has been shut down for the next week to 10 days.
- Yankees SP David Phelps has been diagnosed with a new elbow strain and will be shut down for two weeks.
- Dr. James Andrews has recommended a non-surgical option to treat Yankees C Francisco Cervelli's ailing right elbow.
- Red Sox RP Matt Thornton has felt continued improvement with his strained right oblique.
- Athletics C John Jaso is still experiencing concussion-related symptoms.
- Indians RP Josh Tomlin (elbow) will move his rehab assignment up to Double-A Akron Wednesday.
- Rays manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday that he expects OF Desmond Jennings (finger) to return around when he's first eligible.
- White Sox RP Brian Omogrosso underwent surgery Monday to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone spur in his right elbow.
- Angels RP Sean Burnett will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a small tear in his left flexor tendon.
- Rays SP Matt Moore (elbow) is hoping to throw a bullpen session this weekend.
- Angels OF Peter Bourjos (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake Thursday.
- Angels 2B Howie Kendrick is day-to-day after being diagnosed with a sprained left knee.
- Twins SS Pedro Florimon Jr. (wrist) is expected back in the lineup Wednesday.
- Twins OF Josh Willingham (knee) could be activated before the second game of Friday's doubleheader in Chicago.
- Royals C Salvador Perez awoke without a headache Tuesday for the first time since suffering his concussion.
Notes and Rumors
National League:
- Rockies prospect RHP Jonathan Gray was dominant in his debut with High-A Modesto on Friday, allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts over five scoreless innings.
- Mets manager Terry Collins said during a radio interview on WFAN Tuesday that he will use a closer by committee while RP Bobby Parnell (neck) is out.
- According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Giants have called off a deal with left-hander Ted Lilly.
American League
- Mariners interim manager Robby Thompson said Tuesday that there are no plans at this time to convert RP Tom Wilhelmsen into a starter.
