Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
FB 70 93-96 97 hit 95, 96 a lot; great downhill plane; late life with arm-side run; shows plus-plus potential but plays down due to lack of command; presently has more control to glove side than arm-side; needs refinement in delivery which could allow pitch to play to its' potential.
SL 70 84-86 86 tight, tight spin with tilt; breaks late; comes from same arm slot as FB; shows ability to throw for chase pitch and strike; has more command of this than FB; will throw in any count; loves to backdoor LHH, throw away to RHH; refinement in overall command will allow it to play plus-plus due to fear of FB.

I was throughly impressed with Matt Hobgood. It may not be what the Orioles fans want based on where he was drafted but there is something there. His delivery has a lot of effort and he falls off to the 1B side often. His hips open a bit early at times causing his arm to drag and the command to get loose. The FB plays at a plus-plus velocity but his ability to command it in the zone needs work. The SL is plus-plus offering and with command improvement, it will play up to its' potential of being a major league out pitch. There is no physical projection in Hobgood's frame and a chance he could add bad weight. As a reliever, he'll need to be able to throw back to back days and improve the command a bit but on that night Hobgood was effectively wild. It will be interesting to track his progress.
