Joe Palumbo

Born: 10/26/1994 (Age: 24)
Bats: Left Throws: Left
Height: 6' 0" Weight: 195
Mechanics
Slow and methodical windup with high leg kick into a medium stride towards home plate. Hips stay closed with flexible core full of tension before firing hips and unwinding. Arm whips from behind head to a three-quarters arm slot which can be hard to pick up out of the hand. Good extension towards home plate before release.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
Fastball 60 91-94 96 High spin rate four-seamer with plus effective velocity due to velocity and extension. Comes back a bit towards arm-side when left on right side of the plate. Plays well high in the zone.
Curveball 60 77-79 80 True curveball with plus depth, shape, and spin. Generally has good feel, although rarely he will lose release point for an inning.
Changeup 60 84 85 Flashes plus, with deceptive arm speed, plus tumble, and swing-and-miss fade. Currently inconsistent feel.
Overall

Palumbo is a tall and broad-shouldered southpaw with average athleticism. He is probably now about 20 pounds of good weight heavier than his listed weight.

Palumbo might not find the consistency in his currently below-average command to take the final step into his likely role in the back end of the rotation, but his stuff should play well in an MLB bullpen as a fallback. Improvements in command and consistency would improve his outlook to a mid-rotation arm, and there's potential to add a hard slider or cutter (which he's already been toying with) to the pitch mix as well.
