Tool Future Grade Report
Hit 50 An over-the-top swing path limits most of Downs' hard contact to the left side of the field and causes him to struggle with pitches on the outer-half of the plate. With a willingness to use more of the field, Downs' superior athleticism and coordination could translate into an annual .270-.300 hitter.
Power 55 The current swing promotes lift to left/left-center field, but also leaves glaring holes, most notably on the outer-half of the zone. Limited opposite-field power currently, Downs' wiry athletic-strength and a few slight swing adjustments project eventual 20-25 HR potential.
Baserunning/Speed 60 Plus-speed with good baserunning instincts and aggressiveness. A quick first-step and an efficient stride make 20-30 stolen bases/year feasible.
Glove 55 Plus-athleticism with good range in both directions. Soft/receptive hands and quick feet ensure development of plus-fielding actions. Prefers shortstop and capable of handling the position, although the lack of elite arm-strength puts more emphasis/importance on the efficiency of his fielding actions. Gold Glove-caliber as a second basemen. May offer most value in a Utility role, as his versatile skill-set and athleticism would make third base and outfield smooth transitions.
Arm 50 As a shortstop, arm strength is tested on off-balance throws and plays in the hole. Plus-athleticism and technique can compensate for lack of velocity. Gets the job done, generally.
Overall

Downs is a jack-of-all-trades, who may be capable of mastering one or two of those skills. His versatility may prove to be his greatest strength, as his offensive-production can overcome any defensive culpability. He's a dynamic speed/power combo ballplayer who's developing and fine-tuning his natural abilities. A Enrique Hernández/Mookie Betts blend.
