Having once cashed in on a comeback with the Nats, Hector Carrasco gave it another shot after being released by the Angels last summer, but was so flat he didn't earn a call-up from Columbus

The erstwhile utility pitcher was initially tabbed to replace the ailing Colon in the rotation, but a couple of weak efforts and a tough loss pushed him back into the pen. He spent the rest of the year there mopping up and pitching in middle relief and thrived in the role, giving the Angels old-fashioned relief succor in the form of multi-inning outings and stranded inherited runners. That sort of multi-inning role is one other teams could probably stand to create within their own pens.

Resurrections this surprising might force even the biggest skeptic to find religion, because Carrasco`s career had gone east of nowhere. He came back from Japan and not only rediscovered himself, he earned a $6.1 million, two-year deal with the Angels in the process. First thriving in the middle innings, Carrasco was pushed into the rotation to confront an emergency called `September,` and didn`t embarrass himself. However, he also drew five injury-weakened or simply weak lineups in those starts. Having performed his miracle, Carrasco is more likely to remind us why the resurrected were dead in the first place. Between his poor command and the Angels counting on him to step into the rotation as their fifth man, this is one comeback that`s all comebacked out.

After missing all of 2002 with rotator cuff surgery, the Orioles took a chance on Carrasco and set him up with the Triple-A Lynx. He started strong, and was soon Ottawa's closer. When Willis Roberts's injury opened up a spot in the pen, Carrasco came up and held it for the rest of the year, even though he wasn't very effective. He's been a lot better in the past, and as a free agent he could still be a nice addition to the back of somebody's bullpen.
