posted by Dave Kirsch on behalf of Greg Spira
For all of you who have been awaiting the REAL postseason awards (i.e. not the BBWAA mediot-induced ones), they are finally ready for consumption.
Without wanting to make the explanation of delays too long, let me say that I'm posting on behalf of Greg Spira, who has been in and out (and in and out and in) the hospital for several weeks, first with kidney problems and then with a pulmonary embolism and who knows what else. While collecting the votes, I was able to get in earlier than expected for some surgery of my own, which further delayed things. Special thanks to Steven Carter, David Nieporent and Dave Pease for tallying the votes. I'm recovering just fine, but I haven't heard from Greg in several days.
Before Gary Huckabay steps in with a shot of his own, I'll say: NO, my surgery was not for enhancement or enlargement of any body parts, it was actually a reduction of sorts. (Not a reduction of WonderGut (tm), though; that was donated to Davis, CA several months ago - sounds like it's thriving there - I keep donating a couple pounds every week.)
Now that I've veered entirely off the topic at hand, here goes, starting with ROY, then Cy Young, then MVP:

Participation was down sharply this year, from about 125 to about 80, presumably because I didn't spend any time threatening to place curses on anyone who didn't vote.
Dave Kirsch handled the receipt of the ballots for me. Dave got Mike Jones to do the AL ballot counting and Harold Brooks to do the NL vote counting. For their efforts, I nominate them for rsb sainthood.
Eventually, when I'm well, I'm going to check over the ballot counting, just to make sure everything is accurate. When I counted some ballots myself, I came up with different numbers than Mike and Harold did. However, considering my mental and physical state, I suspect their calculations are far more accurate than mine, and I'm using theirs. (My calculations weren't so different that the order of placement of anybody significant was changed; I got the same order of names)
One note on the point system for the Cy Youngs. I think it was Ted Frank who wondered why 10-8-6-4-2 instead of 5-4-3-2-1. And the answer is .... I'm stupid! It really should've been 5-4-3-2-1, but I was, indeed, stupid. Though the higher numbers do have the small advantage of eliminating half points when people put ties on their ballot.
As most of you know, we followed the BBWAA balloting method on the MVP and Rookie votes. However, last year it seemed that people wanted to vote for more pitchers on the Cy Young ballot than the 3 the BBWAA do, so we diverged from BBWAA methods on the two Cy Young ballots. I did check the AL balloting to see if there would've been any difference in the outcome if we had followed the BBWAA method, and there was no change in the order that any of the major vote-getters came in. I have yet to check the NL on that count.
Eventually, I'll go over the balloting, present the NL results in a way similar to the way Mike presented the AL results, and eliminate all the non-rookies from the Rookie of the Year balloting results.
But that won't happen for a while. And all the important stuff is all here. So now the results.
A few comments: We have two repeat winners from last year. Of the 6 award winners, 5 of them match the baseball writers' awards (I'm assuming the results of the MVPs this week). This is the first year in a long while on rsb that Roger Clemens did not win the AL Cy Young.

Now that the World Series is over - Congratulations to the winning Toronto Blue Jays - it's time to present the winners of the 1992 rec.sport.baseball awards. But first let me present a few details about the vote and how it was counted.
116 participated in this year's balloting. This was a 20% increase over the participation in last year's balloting. Not everyone who sent a ballot voted in every category, though. 110 people participated in the NL and AL MVP balloting as well as the AL Cy Young balloting, 109 people in the NL Cy Young balloting, 98 in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting and 89 in the NL Rookie of the Year balloting.
The AL races were far closer than the NL races. 2 of the 3 AL races were decided on the final day of balloting.
I counted every ballot that I received. My aim in interpreting the ballots was to accurately record who the voter wanted to vote for. Thus, votes for Mike Maddux went to Greg, Alex Karros to Eric, etc. Spelling was also occassionally a problem. One person voted for Cal Eldred by writing something along the lines of "Entret - Mil." A few people put players in the wrong league - e.g., Kenny Lofton in the N.L. In those cases, I tried to put such players at the end of the voter's ballot in the other league if there were spots available.
The only votes which were disallowed were for non-rookies in the Rookie of the Year balloting. Mike Mussina was a popular but unavailable choice in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting. In these cases, I always e-mailed the voter to give him an opportunity to change his vote. If there was no response, I treated the vote for the ineligible player as a hole and moved up the lower choices one notch each.
Several people tried to have empty spots in the middle of their MVP ballot. This was usually done so that Bonds could be 1 and there wouldn't be a 2,3, or 4 but would be a 5. This was not allowed for obvious reasons. Voters were free to leave as many blank spots at the end of their ballot as they wanted, but leaving blank spots in the middle was a no-no. In these cases, I e-mailed the voters in question and moved up the lower choices to higher positions. I did the same thing when a player appeared more than once on an MVP ballot (I eliminated the second appearance, of course).
Well, that's the administrative stuff. Now on to the results.
The voting information below should be easy to understand. Each column headed by a number reveals the number of 1st, 2nd, etc. place votes the player on the left received. TB is just the number of ballots the player appeared on. TP stands for Total Points.
Note - Because of some last place tie votes, adding up the numbers in each row will not always get you a number equivalent to TB.

OK, on with the good stuff. Just a reminder that votes were counted in a 5-3-1 points format (5 for first, 3 for second, 1 for third).
NL MVP 1st 2nd 3rd Total -------------------- --- --- --- ----- Bonds, Barry 38 16 2 240 Pendleton, Terry 30 13 11 202 Bonilla, Bobby 6 6 5 53 Clark, Will 'Nuschler' 4 5 7 42 Johnson, Howard 2 5 5 30 Gant, Ron 3 2 4 25 Glavine, Tom 4 1 2 25 Larkin, Barry 2 3 4 23 Sandberg, Ryne 1 1 1 9 Strawberry, Darryl 0 1 3 6 Smith, Lee 0 1 3 6 Butler, Brett 0 2 0 6 McGriff, Fred 0 1 2 5 Smith, Ozzie 0 1 0 3 Justice, David 0 0 1 1 Candaele, Casey 0 0 1 1 TOTALS 90 58 53 677
When Barry was informed that he captured this award for the second year in a row he promptly proclaimed, "Screw off". It's this reporter's opinion that he's never going to be a good player if he can't learn to be a team leader and good influence in the clubhouse. He could learn a thing or two from Bobby Bonilla and Andy Van Slyke, who are both fine young men.
Not a whole lotta surprises here, but the name of the person that voted for Casey Candaele is not being released until he's in a safe place. (Hint: it's *way* north and in a much less-traveled part of North America.) Barry Larkin, Ryne Sandberg and Fred McGriff really deserved better, but at least we got most of this stuff right, IMHO. Bobby Bonilla is reportedly excited about his third place finish and is looking forward to signing with the Angels .. or Yankees .. or Blue Jays .. or Padres .. or the Saskatoon Slurpee Sippers.
AL MVP 1st 2nd 3rd Total --------------------- --- --- --- ----- Ripken, Cal 55 13 1 315 Thomas, Frank 28 30 8 238 Fielder, Cecil 3 4 5 32 Griffey, Ken 0 4 10 22 Carter, Joe 3 1 2 20 Tartabull, Danny 2 0 7 17 Canseco, Jose 1 1 5 13 Clemens, Roger 0 1 5 8 Alomar, Roberto 1 0 0 5 Puckett, Kirby 1 0 0 5 Tettleton, Mickey 0 1 0 3 Franco, Julio 0 1 0 3 Ventura, Robin 0 1 0 3 Hrbek, Kent 0 1 0 3 White, Devon 0 0 2 2 Palmeiro, Rafael 0 0 2 2 Erickson, Scott 0 0 1 1 Fisk, Carlton 0 0 1 1 Davis, Chili 0 0 1 1 Molitor, Paul 0 0 1 1 TOTALS 94 58 51 695
Another set of reasonably good picks. Frank Thomas couldn't fight off an overwhelming number of first place picks for Ripken. When told of the award, Ripken announced, "I just wanna thank all those O's fans who stood by me and insisted to the rest of those net.statheads that the streak isn't affecting my play. Geez, I get about 20 days off during the season anyways. You'll have to excuse me now; I'm a little tired, and need to go home and hibernate for about three consecutive months."
As a Jays fan I'm ecstatic that Joe Carter did good things this year, but *come on*. No way does he deserve to be ahead of Danny Tartabull, Canseco, Clemens, Tettleton, Franco or even his own teammate Alomar, IMHO of course. And Kent Hrbek even being on the list really scares me. If he finishes any higher up there with Cecil, we may become a nation of beer swilling, oreo and milkshake eating tubs of lard. Wait, we already .. well, never mind.
Remember that goofy couple that made it to every minor (& major) league ballpark this year? Well, apparently Cecil Fielder has taken a cue from them and has signed an endorsement contract with Old Country Buffet restaurants; he intends to visit (and pillage) every one during the offseason.
NL Cy Young 1st 2nd 3rd Total -------------------- --- --- --- ----- Glavine, Tom 68 9 2 369 Smith, Lee 8 13 6 85 Rijo, Jose 4 8 6 50 Martinez, Dennis 2 7 14 45 Smiley, John 4 6 3 41 Avery, Steve 0 2 5 11 Martinez, Ramon 0 1 3 6 Harnisch, Pete 0 2 0 6 Benes, Andy 1 0 1 6 Smoltz, John 0 1 1 4 Morgan, Mike 0 0 2 2 Maddux, Greg 0 0 1 1 Belcher, Tim 0 0 1 1 Portugal, Mark 0 0 1 1 -------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 87 49 46 628
As expected, Tommy 'disco ain't dead as long as I'm around' Glavine took the honors for NL Cy Young. When told that he had won the award, he gave a blank stare into the r.s.bb camcorder and pronounced, "Leave me alone, man, I'm trying to work on my dancing steps and slides. I know what happened last time you guys tried to interview a pro ballplayer when he was dancing .. Lou Whitaker was laid up for a long time, man."
Lee Smith was surprised to find he had finished as high as second, but took advantage of the spotlight to actually give us some film. "Gorman, you mother%#(@$@(, like what you got for me? Tom Brunansky sure is a h###uva ballplayer, ain't he? Man, I'd like to come over to your house personally and .." At that point we had to shut off the camcorder for fear of our own lives and the loss of innocence of the average r.s.bb reader.
Mark Portugal was very disappointed he didn't receive more votes; he reportedly shelled out $500 for votes and only got $100 worth. He wanted us to relay that those of you who didn't keep up your end of the bargain can soon expect a visit from some friends of his ..
AL Cy Young 1st 2nd 3rd Total --------------------- --- --- --- ----- Clemens, Roger 69 7 1 367 Erickson, Scott 12 8 3 87 Abbott, Jim 3 10 9 54 Tapani, Kevin 2 9 9 46 Candiotti, Tom 0 7 7 28 Harvey, Bryan 2 3 7 26 Ryan, Nolan 0 5 1 16 Langston, Mark 2 1 1 14 Gullickson, Bill 1 1 0 8 Aguilera, Rick 0 1 1 4 Finley, Chuck 0 1 0 3 McDowell, Jack 0 0 1 1 -------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 91 53 40 654
As expected, the Rocket repeated as Cy Young winner for the vote that *really* counts, even if we aren't recognized by the West Mifflin Tribune. Clemens received one of the highest percentages of a total vote in any category, showing that r.s.bb readers really do know their stuff when Al Feldstein, Ronnie Townsend, Spike and John Navarra aren't included. Clemens was reportedly at a Catholic girls school giving lessons in manners and polite language when we tried to contact him, and as such was unavailable for comment.
Tom Kelly was extremely happy to see Scott Erickson as high as second, but expressed concern going into next season. "He's successful when he's aggressive, we've got to get him back to doing that." Pitching coach Dick Such also wore pride on his face as he announced that they're working with Scott to stay back and be more relaxed next year. Jim Abbott took time out from juggling practice to thank all those on the net who voted for him.
Tom Candiotti had a glazed, almost drunken look on his faced when told the disappointing news that he had finished only 5th. "That's cool, man" was all we were able to get from him. Bill Gullickson claimed ignorance when informed that two of his relatives had internet accounts and had participated in the voting.
NL ROY 1st 2nd 3rd Total --------------------- --- --- --- ----- Bagwell, Jeff 71 4 0 367 Merced, Orlando 5 24 3 100 Lankford, Ray 2 2 2 18 Gonzalez, Luis 0 4 4 16 Fassero, Jeff 0 2 2 8 Chamberlain, Wes 0 1 2 5 Cedeno, Andujar 1 0 0 5 Lewis, Darren 1 0 0 5 Hunter, Brian 0 0 4 4 Stanton, Mike 0 0 3 3 Osuna, Al 0 0 2 2 Pena, Geronimo 0 0 1 1 Wohlers, Mark 0 0 1 1 --------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 80 37 24 535
Rarely has a youngster traded for a set-up man gone on to dominate the ROY voting at the ML level the next year. Jeff Bagwell absoluted dominated the NL ROY voting to an incredible tune. We tried getting him to go visit Skippy Knoblauch, all of a few miles away, in order to save on phone costs but unfortunately Jeff wouldn't comply with our request. So, we don't have a quote from him. Tough luck.
Orlando Merced was said to be thanking Jose Lind for teaching him all about leadership and creating a good environment in the clubhouse. "If Barry Bonds knew half the stuff Jose does about intangibles, he'd be a great player", Merced was rumored to have said. He refused to confirm or deny any quotes.
Luis Gonzalez wanted to personally express his thanks to the astute r.s.bb voters for at least acknowledging his presence, unlike the sophomoric BBWAA writers. Andujar Cedeno openly wondered how he could get a first place vote after setting a record for most errors in a series, but wished to thank his cousin in Helena, Mont. Mike Stanton is still curious why nobody knew he had rookie status. Brian '.17 BAL' Hunter was going to express his thanks, but is temprorily indisposed and was unavailable for comment.
AL ROY 1st 2nd 3rd Total ------------------- --- --- --- ----- Knoblauch, Chuck 48 13 5 284 Guzman, Juan 25 18 5 184 Plantier, Phil 10 8 7 81 Rodriguez, Ivan 2 5 2 27 Martinez, Chito 1 1 7 15 Cuyler, Milt 0 2 4 10 Timlin, Mike 1 0 3 8 Mussina, Mike 0 0 2 2 Vaughn, Mo 0 0 1 1 Henry, Doug 0 0 1 1 ------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 87 47 37 613
Chuck 'Skippy' Knoblauch was ecstatic to find out that he took the r.s.bb ROY vote, evading a charge by flamethrower Juan Guzman. "Oh, that's just great, I must say, oh yes, oh I don't even *suppose* that I might get to meet Pat .. er, the President. Oh, that would be most excellent, I must say. I can't believe this is happening. I must say it's great." It's reported that Guzman burned the drapes in his apartment by shooting flames through his nose when he received the news that he had been beaten by that skinny little white guy from Texas. We have no way to confirm that, but we do know that Guzman was planning on picking up a 'George Bell/Mr. T starter kit' of gold chains if he won the award. Maybe it's better for his fashion sense and the eyes and stomachs of millions of viewers at home that he didn't win. Phil Plantier was happy to receive more recognition than he got from the BBWAA dweebs, and took advantage of the opportunity to explain his batting stance. "You see, one day I was, uh, meditating and I realized what a natural, comfortable position it was. I decided to adapt it to my hitting style and figured, well, at least I'll be able to concentrate up there if nothing else. I just hope I don't get too relaxed and the plate and, er, squeeze one out."
NL RPOY 1st 2nd 3rd Total -------------------- --- --- --- ----- Fassero, Jeff 13 4 0 77 Osuna, Al 9 6 3 66 Wohlers, Mark 5 1 2 30 McElroy, Chuck 3 1 2 20 Stanton, Mike 2 2 2 18 Castillo, Frank 2 1 1 14 Kile, Darryl 1 2 1 12 Young, Anthony 1 2 0 11 Oliveras, Francisco 1 1 0 8 Slocumb, Heathcliff 1 0 0 5 Melendez, Jose 1 0 0 5 Hammond, Chris 0 0 1 1 Sanford, Mo 0 0 1 1 Palacios, Vincente 0 0 1 1 -------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 38 19 13 260
Jeff Fassero gladly accepted his RPOY award in between rounds of 'boulder dodge', the new monthly event at the Big Owe in Montreal. He was last listed in critical condition after being pinned under a 13-ton chunk of granite. An unfortunate incident, but they've finally found a way to put fannies in the Big Owe.
Al 'Big Kahuna' Osuna was not available for comment, as he was too busy 'catching waves, dude'. Chuck McElroy was last seen at Kareem's place picking up some spare glasses when we were looking for an interview, and Heathcliff Slocumb was making the talk show circuit 'just cuz his name sounds neat', according to one publicist.
AL RPOY 1st 2nd 3rd Total -------------------- --- --- --- ----- Guzman, Juan 54 2 0 276 Timlin, Mike 6 11 6 69 Mussina, Mike 2 6 4 32 DeLucia, Rich 1 2 0 11 Morton, Kevin 0 2 1 7 Alvarez, Wilson 0 2 0 6 Henry, Doug 0 1 2 5 Frohwirth, Todd 1 0 0 5 Nagy, Charles 0 1 1 4 Willis, Carl 0 1 0 3 Leiter, Mark 0 1 0 3 Magnante, Mike 0 1 0 3 Chitren, Steve 0 0 1 1 Kamieniecki, Scott 0 0 1 1 -------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 63 27 13 409
Juan 'flaring nostrils' Guzman decimated the field in the rookie pitcher of the year competition to make up for his disappointing loss in ROY. He captured the highest percentage of any vote in the AL; Jeff Bagwell was highest in the NL for the ROY vote.
Rich 'Zzzzziiinnngg' DeLucia managed to pull a few votes out of the voters' hats, probably from sympathetic Mariner fans. Rumor has it a couple of his gopherballs are still traveling. Wilson 'no-hit but boom-boom' Alvarez won recognition for his brief brush with greatness.
NL CPOY 1st 2nd 3rd Total --------------------- --- --- --- ----- Pendleton, Terry 33 2 1 172 Hershiser, Orel 12 2 0 66 Smiley, John 3 2 1 22 Thompson, Milt 2 0 1 11 Smith, Lee 0 3 0 9 Sutcliffe, Rick 1 1 1 9 Leibrandt, Charlie 1 1 0 8 Avery, Steve 1 0 1 6 Belcher, Tim 0 1 2 5 Clancy, Jim 1 0 0 5 Strawberry, Darryl 1 0 0 5 Bielecki, Mike 1 0 0 5 Walk, Bob 1 0 0 5 Rijo, Jose 1 0 0 5 Nixon Otis 0 1 1 4 Harnisch, Pete 0 1 0 3 Bream, Sid 0 1 0 3 Terry, Scott 0 1 0 3 Samuel, Juan 0 0 3 3 Maddux, Mike 0 1 0 3 Cox, Danny 0 1 0 3 Gott, Jim 0 1 0 3 Greene, Tommy 0 0 1 1 Candaele, Casey 0 0 1 1 DeLeon, Jose 0 0 1 1 Johnson, Howard 0 0 1 1 Smoltz, John 0 0 1 1 --------------------- --- --- --- --- TOTALS 58 19 16 363
Terry Pendleton decided he had to just go out and dominate a category this year; since Barry Bonds was destined to win the MVP, Terry naturally set his sights on CPOY. He succeeded with flying colours. He credits most of his success to dumping Dan Quayle as his publicist and campaign manager.
Orel Hershiser said as soon as the piece of linguini attaching his arm to his shoulder had fully strengthened, he'd be ready to challenge for the Cy Young again. (Naturally, the linguini was donated by Tommy LaSagna when he went on his slim-fast diet. This may be the first time in the history of the game that a pitcher's future has been dependent on the eating habits of his manager; we know there's no way in hell he would've found any linguini in LA if Tommy wasn't on a diet.)
John Smiley promised not to slam his hand into the doors of taxicabs in the future, even if the distinct impression of another person's jaw finds its way onto his hand. Casey Candaele managed to get a vote in a second category, which begs the question: Does Al Feldstein *still* have access to the net, and if so, WHY? Otis 'toot toot' Nixon wanted to thank his supporters and indicated their thank-you packages will arrive from Columbia sometime this week.

Upon hearing that they had tied for Comeback Player of the Year honors in the AL, Chili Davis and Willie Randolph kissed each other and pronounced, "Just like my sister." They both expressed eternal gratitude that some of Cal Ripken's votes instead went to Bill Gullickson, Jack Morris, Bill Wegman, Don Mattingly, and Carl 'goober' Willis. "We couldn't have done it without the support of some of those fans that are convinced this was a comeback year for Don Mattingly, or that Bill Wegman and Goober Willis ever had anything from which to come back."
Reportedly, Ripken wasn't too fazed that he missed out on this award which should have been automatic. When questioned about CPOY, Ripken responded, "Really, the streak doesn't bother me at all .. I just take it one day at a time out there and hope that good things happen." When reminded that the question was about CPOY, he said, "Oh. Well, I would liked to have won, but let me reiterate that even if I would have won, the streak wouldn't be a big deal at all. The team is the most important thing."
Although it's been reported that Steve Howe has officially changed his name to Johnny Lovestuff to erase memories of his past, Howe and his agent were unavailable for comment. Bill Gullickson this time wanted to thank the 7 extended family members who took time out to remember him. Bill Wegman wanted to thank all those who voted for him, even though "It's like winning a 100 meter dash where there's no starting line". Don Mattingly was grateful that his ex-ex-ex-ex-girlfriend took time out to think of him, even though he questioned her judgement a bit.
We wanted to talk to Carl 'goober' Willis, but it seems he was indisposed saving up buckets of saliva and drool at home in preparation for the coming season. Rumors have placed Willis under the tutelage of hall of famer Gaylord Perry.
