San Diego Padres

Baseball Prospectus 1996

The dark winter appears to be over in San Diego. After Tom Werner's early '90s make-the-owners-like-me purge of every talented player on the roster except Tony Gwynn, San Diegans suffered through two years of Archi Cianfrocco, Frank Seminara and others of their ilk, players selected not for their talent but their price tag. The 1992 team which chased the Braves into September before fading was ripped apart as Werner established himself as the small-market poster boy.

Werner is gone now, having found stupidity works much better when making sitcoms then when running a baseball team. The architects of the dumps, Joe McIlvaine and Randy Smith, have moved on to New York and Detroit, respectively. And the Padres' new owner, John Moores, has shown a distinct willingness to at least try and improve the team. The moves this attitude has spawned have been inconsistent, but the trend is heartening for Padre faithful.

I believe the Pads are the clear-cut favorite in the NL West. They are the only team in the division which has a balance of offense and pitching, and they mix in a good defense just for variety. Their everyday lineup is the best in the division, with the on-base of Rickey Henderson, Tony Gwynn and Wally Joyner at the top, and a lack of any complete stiff, making up for an absence of power. The Rockies and Dodgers have a good power core, but will lack the runners on base which lead to 750-run seasons. The Giants have two of the best players of the '90s, but no one else who is better than even money to post a .340 OBP.

Joey Hamilton, the best pitcher in the division born in this hemisphere, anchors a shallow rotation. Andy Ashby now has 350 innings of good pitching under his belt, and makes it easier to believe he's for real with every start. Bob Tewksbury is a good innings sponge, and will stabilize the #3 rotation spot. Beyond that, the Padres have a number of options, some (Glenn Dishman) distinctly better than others (Fernando Valenzuela). Who manager Bruce Bochy selects to be the back end of the rotation will go a long way toward determining how well the Padres do.

Randy Smith's legacy is the bullpen. The Padres have a group of relievers who can bring it. Trevor Hoffman, who struggled with his location last year but has as good at fastball as anyone in the league, leads this group. Bryce Florie, Doug Bochtler and Dustin Hermanson all are hard-throwing right-handers who, collectively, could toss 220 innings of 3.00 ball. Ron Villone was part of the Andy Benes heist last summer, and struck out over 13 batters per nine IP last year. With Houston's trade of Dave Veres to Montreal, I expect the Padre bullpen to rival the Rockies' and Expos' as the best in the National League.

This team isn't the Indians. Only Hamilton is a sure thing in the rotation, and the offense is pretty old. The "inconsistent moves" referred to earlier? They signed Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley to six years' worth of expensive deals, with both players on the wrong side of 30 and unlikely to match their 1995 performances. But they have the fewest glaring weaknesses of anyone in the division and the best manager, not that that says much.

The problem for the Padres is that they may have to win this year. By 1997, their core players will all be in decline, and while they have some good young players on the way up, the contract status of the players currently in town will make it difficult to mix in the youth. I think they'll cash in this year.

I'm still not convinced, but I'm more willing to be. He's 27 this year, and a year even similar to 1995 would go a long way towards a division title for the Pads. His improved offense hasn't led to backbiting about his glove, making him a rare counterargument against NLoCD.

Exceptional walk rates, but not a whole lot else to sell. Two hot months away from a major league bench job, and I think if he gets a chance, he'll have a nice little career.

Reched AAA at age 21 for no apparent reason. Can't be taken seriously as a prospect until he actually has some success somewhere, and unless he hits .340, he's not having success, since his secondary skills are lousy. Still can't say "no prospect," but he's in trouble.

I think there's been an Oscar Azocar sighting. Judging from the walk rates of most of the Padre minor leaguers, he must be gainfully employed as a their roving hitting instructor. Homer's a prize pupil.

Took it up a notch last year, despite getting off to a dreadful start in the field. The Jack Murphy effect gave helped Caminiti to 27 errors, although his other defensive numbers were good. He's a key to the Padre season. They don't need another year like 1995, but they need him to at least match his 1993-94. He's a similar player to Tim Wallach, and Wallach disappeared when his career reached this point.

We've got six years of data. Five say he's not a real prospect, one says he's at least a minor one. That 1994 was good, but when a 21-year-old four-year pro has a big year in A ball, some skepticism is called for. Good defensive reputation. Traded to Detroit, where he'll have a clearer shot at a major league job.

His lack of development is maddening. At 21, he looked like he would peak at .300/.340/.510, with good defense. As recently as two years ago, he added walks to his game, improved defensively and was on track to be one of the best shortstops in the league. Now, he's trying to hold off Craig Shipley to keep his job. Still a player I'd want to keep, because if the talent takes over, he's an All-Star.

Well, if he was really a shortstop, he could be a player. Unfortunately, he's a cornerman who filled in for a few weeks. Not a bad bench player, but a terrible regular. Great name, and almost merits a roster spot for it alone.

With all due respect to the RDFC, and as much as I'd like to see him back at a 1992 level, it's over. He's 34, and had old player's skills when he was 26.

He wouldn't be my first choice for a leadoff hitter, but the return of the walks last year helped considerably. Wasn't having a particularly good year until he moved into the #1 slot in August. Extremely bad signing by the Padres, who assigned a disproportionate amount of credit for their improvement last year to Finley and Caminiti. The Vlad looks dead on, and if it is, the Padres have a serious problem. Good defender.

Has gotten better in his mid-thirties, a trait not entirely foreign to hitters of this type. He has no real power to lose, and makes his living by hitting line drives to left, so bat speed isn't a big issue. Can be expected to decline, but he's so high right now, has years to go. A serious threat to break the record for consecutive .300 seasons (17). Fun to watch.

Rickey's at an interesting career point. He is no longer a devastating base stealer, but because of his other skills, is still a fantastic player. He is finally moving to a good hitter's park for him. If he stops stealing and focuses on the rest of his game, he can be the second-best left fielder in the league nehind Bonds. A .300/.420/.530 year is well within his grasp.

Anybody who has a hot three weeks in March can stake a claim to the Padre shortstop slot this year. Holbert is third in line, but isn't as good as Cedeno and can't play multiple positions like Shipley, so he will probably start the year in Las Vegas. No star potential, minimal chance at a career.

Not that Bip Roberts is any great shakes, but to move a useful utility player for this mediocrity, then extend said mediocrity's contract by two years, is one of the dumber moves seen in a while. Joyner is as white-bread average as you can get, and if that changes, it won't be in the right direction. This signing also removes the final chance the team had to get Marc Newfield into the lineup, unless they want to convert him to shortstop or something.

About as close to the picture-perfect pinch-hitter as you can get. Left-handed, hits line drives, doubles power, can play a few positions when needed. A much better bench player than regular, and a definite asset for the Padres.

At the risk of being hooted out of the room, he reminds me of Albert Belle, circa 1990. Given that Belle's 1994-95 are out of line with any career path, I can easily see Newfield settling in at a .280/.330/.510 level this year, and improving that over time. Is completely screwed playing-time-wise, with Henderson, Gwynn and Joyner, all with expensive multi-year deals, occupying the spots he can play. Started the spring scalding hot.

In much the same situtaion as Newfield, except with year under his belt. Nieves has real power, but his strike zone judgment has deteriorated since he left the Braves' organization, and it shows up in all his numbers. Still a good prospect, but will have to earn his chances now. Traded to Detroit, which increases his value considerably. Recommended.

Why you would pay Wally Joyner millions to do what Petagine could do in his sleep is a mystery, but one which creates a real problem for Roberto. He cannot play the outfield, but he can be an above-average major league first baseman. His plate discipline is among the best in the game, and he hit's for average and power as well. Traded to the Mets; with Brogna out for a few weeks, Petagine needs to make his case forcefully if he's going to have a career.

Another veteran the Padres are enamored of, handing him a two-year deal this winter. Out of Fenway, he has no doubles power, so he needs at least a .360 OBP to contribute. When he's there, like last year, he doesn't hurt you. But at 33, the line between part of the problem and part of the solution is very thin. Reed will cross it this year.

While he has very little value in rotisserie, Shipley is the kind of player a manager loves to have. He can play all three infield positions, and even some outfield if necessary. He has enough offensive skills to make him a useful pinch-hitter, and can even pinch-run for the slowest guys on the team. He also has something of a platoon split, making him useful as half of a starter. It'd be nice if he would walk more than once a month, but all that does is keep him from becoming a useful regular.

Scab. May or may not have been denied a trip to San Diego by the players, who were rumored to have vehemently opposed his callup. Frankly, the self-righteous whining of some of the scabs was a bit ridiculous. Did they think they could participate in an effort to take jobs away from striking real major leaguers, and be welcomed with open arms upon their return? The players' union, despite all the bad press, was a heck of a lot more tolerant of scabs last year than you could expect, say, the Teamsters, or the UAW to be. The scabs knew what they were getting into, and when the owners were head-slapped by Judge Sotomayor, should have known better than to complain about the outcome.

OK, maybe it wasn't aliens. There was some erosion in Ashby's peripheral numbers last year, but it wasn't statistically significant. It could be he just took a while to get acclimated to the major leagues. If that's the case, and the last two years are his level, he's not going to have any problems putting the kids through Harvard.

One of about eleventy thousand Padre relief prospects, and not near the top of my list. I like him better as a starter, since he seems a bit too hittable for a relief role. His build and mechanics make me think he could be a successful starter, but someone in the organization needs to lead the way. As a reliever, he'll struggle, probably at AAA.

Has been flirting with success, without actually having much, since he was a prospect in the Toronto organization. (For ten points: who was he traded for?) I'd like to say I know which way his career is headed, but he's difficult to predict. It doesn't help that he never stays in one role for longer than 18 minutes. (Answer: Bud Black.)

One of the fun bunch. Bochtler came to the Pads, along with Ausmus and Ashby for Bruce Hurst and Greg W. Harris, in one of the worst trades of the expansion era. Funky motion, good movement and pitch selection, holds runners like a cross between Rick Aguilera and JoJo, the Dog-Faced Boy. Behind Hoffman and Florie, about even with Hermanson. Recommended.

Good command of a fantastic changeup makes him a prospect. Unfortunately, the change of speeds from his fastball might not be enough, as that pitch has been known to gather dust on the way to the plate. Does the little things like hold runners quite well, and if he makes it through the adjustment period, will have a fine career. Recommended, but be patient.

Needs to work out some control issues, and holds runners in a way that makes you think Bochtler is Terry Mulholland, but his slider is a dominant pitch, and he should have a fine season playing Mel Rojas to Hoffman's John Wetteland.

The strikeout rate is low, but he gets lots of groundballs, and adheres to the Ray Miller credo: work fast, change speeds, throw strikes. Intelligent pitcher; he does all the secondary things well, such as holding runners, fielding the position and, after a terrible rookie season, is an improving hitter. We'll still be discussing him in 2010.

Brought up prematurely last May, but the effects shouldn't be lasting. While he has the arm and the pitches to be an exceptional reliever, he's extremely raw, and has to cross the bridge from thrower to pitcher. He can't do that when he changes teams every few weeks. If left alone for 75 innings at AAA, he'll be ready to step in in 1997. There is at least a 1/3 chance the Padres will ruin him this year.

Over 50-odd innings, any of the "closers" in baseball can have an off year. Hoffman's was in 1995, when he lost a few MPH on his fastball, and spent much of the year with his neck craned, staring into the left field seats. He'll bec back in 1996, good as new. May need more work than he gets in his current role.

Another Randy Smith hard thrower, this one a Met system refugee. Currently a one trick pony, but it's a good trick. The Padres have the bullpen depth to bring him along slowly, and a year of junk relief good do wonders for Kroon's development.

How does this happen? A guy's moving merrily along, has two good years out of the bullpen in the majors, and five innings into his third season gets sent down and never returns. Weird. Mauser's bad year can be chalked up to shock at finding himself back in the PCL, but he's fighting an uphill battle in San Diego. Will be back in another uniform.

Unadjusted, he allowed just six homers last year between A-ball and AA. He's still pretty young, but if he can maintain that kind of pitching in the PCL this year, he'll mark himself as a prospect.

How many consecutive years do I want to be wrong...? OK. Sanders has all the things you look for in a starting pitcher. He's well-built, strikes a lot of guys out, doesn't walk too many batters and has a variety of pitches. He keeps bumping into injury problems, though. If healthy, highly recommended.

At least a full season of AAA away from being a factor at the major league level.

As much as I like him for the inning-eating capabilities, the average American League right-handed hitter hit roughly like Tony Gwynn against him last year. I don't care if you issue no walks, and never even have a three-ball count: you're not helping if you're being hit that hard. Will not have an ERA within one run of the league average this year; he'll either be great or awful.

He's not terribly effective anymore, but I think, if he's used right, he can be an asset. Spotting him in big ballparks and against teams with free swingers, and using him out of the bullpen as a long man when he's not starting, I wouldn't be surprised if he put up 130 innings of 3.50 ball. It would take a lot of nerve to use him this way, and if course he'd have to want to try it, but when you don't have clear cut #4 and #5 starters, what would it hurt?

1996's Ricky Bottalico. 80 innings, 2.00 ERA, a ridiculous number of strikeouts, very few hits and little power. And he'll get better.
