California Angels

Baseball Prospectus 1996

The Angels' 1995 collapse was one of the most misunderstood stories of the season. Overall, the team's 77-67 finish was much better than they had any reason to expect, and should have been considered a success. The anomaly was not their .300 play down the stretch, but their .600-plus play leading up to it.

The team rushed out to their fabled 11 1/2-game lead over the second-place Rangers in a three-week stretch surrounding the All-Star Break, during which Jim Edmonds, Gary Disarcina, J.T. Snow and Garrett Anderson performed nine miles over their heads. For a time, the Angels challenged the Indians for the league lead in run scoring, despite having two complete ciphers in the lineup in Damion Easley and the catcher, usually Jorge Fabregas. Key to this was the presence of Disarcina, who was running an .850 OPS in the #9 hole, a boost for any offense. Of course, none of these players were anywhere near their career norms, and a regression was not a matter of if, but when.

Crisis point #1 came on August 3rd, when Disarcina tore ligaments in his left thumb, an injury which sidelined him for six weeks. With no good alternative, the Angels trotted out the comedy team of Owen, Easley and Schofield to short during his absence, with horrific results. While much was made of the defensive impact, what it really did was cripple the lineup. The Angels 7-8-9 of an assortment of catchers, second basemen and shortstops was putrid offensively, producing virtually nothing.

At the same time the percentages, and Marcel Lachemann's bizarre decision to not carry a backup outfielder, began to catch up to Garrett Anderson and Jim Edmonds. Both had played almost every inning since Anderson's June recall, and now began to slump. The Angels paroled Dave Gallagher from Philadelphia in early August, and called up Orlando Palmeiro a few weeks later, but the damage was done.

The final blow was the mysterious slump of Tony Phillips. Acquired from Detroit before the season, Phillips was having the best year of his career through July, setting a career high for home runs while running his typical .410 OBP. His fade to average meant that an Angel offense which had employed seven solid contributors was down to two in Tim Salmon and Chili Davis. Without six runs a game of support, the weak Angel rotation was exposed. Despite a monster September by Tim Salmon, the Angels were caught and passed by the Mariners, and finally put to death by Randy Johnson and Luis Sojo on October 2nd.

That the Angels contended last year is undoubtedly a bad thing for the franchise's future. Rather than make the hard choices and build from the ground up around Salmon, Troy Percival, Brian Anderson and super-prospects Darin Erstad and Todd Greene, the Angels are now convinced their present collection of players is a contender. To that end, they tied up the aging Chuck Finley for four years and terminally mediocre Jim Abbott for three. They also added Steve Ontiveros, sparking a number of "guess when he goes on the DL" office pools. Assigning an inappropriate amount of blame to Phillips for their collapse, they let him go to Chicago while signing Tim Wallach and Jack Howell, who have combined for two good years in the majors in the 1990s, to platoon at 3B. 33-year-old Randy Velarde was brought in to fill either the second base vacuum or to reprise the super-sub role he performed with the Yankees. In either case, he's bound to decline.

Individually, these moves might not be damning. Collectively, they're signs the team can't tell a baseball player from Pocahontas, and that the Angels will regress to a .420-.450 level this year.

Good left-handed pinch-hitter/fifth outfielder. Walks enough to be useful at the start of an inning, enough pop to be used with runners on base. Finished the year with the Angels, and is now at the point in his career where he could turn up anywhere for three months.

Now that the Angel bandwagon has emptied, we can look at Garrett more realistically. Hit like Tony Gwynn through early August, but his lack of patience at the plate caught up with him afterwards and he slipped badly, ending up with a good, but hardly stunning, rookie season. Struggled against lefthanders down the stretch, swings at everything with seams and plays an indifferent left field. Hit .405 on 0-and-2, which can't last.

Will probably start the year at Edmonton, waiting for the 1988 flashback platoon of Wallach and Howell to falter. At that rate, he'd be in Anaheim on April 20th or so, but still has to watch Eduardo Perez blow his 11th chance before moving in at third. If the walk rate continues to improve, he'll have a good career. Otherwise, he's nothing special.

Singles-hitting, base-stealing outfielder who never hit until he was 25 in A-ball. He's no prospect, but if he can hit .320 in AAA for a few more months, he could become someone's fifth outfielder, a role his skills are best-suited for.

Hasn't gotten lucky yet. Correia is one of dozens of guys in the mix for major league utility infielder jobs. Some of them, like Craig Shipley, Tom Foley and Alex Arias, fall into a situation where they can have a career. Others like Correia and Dave Silvestri bounce around despite being no worse, and sometimes appreciably better, than the lottery winners. The ability to play shortstop is important in this battle, and Correia can, so his number should get called eventually.

A rare player who became a better hitter in his thirties, Davis has been the best regular DH in the AL over the last three years. Even without playing the field, he began to break down in 1995, and 1996 should be the start of the decline phase.

Captain of the Age 27 All-Star team, and the best bet on that team to fall off a cliff in 1996. Never walks, and the power is a fluke. A good defensive shortstop, but his hitting is so bad in a typical year that he hurts more than he helps.

It's official: 1993 was the aberration. With the arrival of Velarde, Correia's good year and the perception that he contributed to the collapse, Easley will need a good spring to stick with the Angels. A good defensive second baseman, fair at shortstop, and not fast enough that you'd keep him around to run, so he'll have to win a regular job to contribute.

That was random. Improved everything but his walk rate in 1995, going from marginal fourth outfielder to, for one year at least, the best center fielder in the league. Almost lost his job in May, but was the hottest of all Angels in June and July as they built their lead. Good defensively, strong, accurate arm. Will slip back toward average in 1996.

Should be the starting second baseman at Vancouver again this year, with absolutely no one behind him in the organization. No prospect.

Good fourth outfielder/pinch-hitter. Picked up by the Angels in August when they realized that playing Salmon, Edmonds and Anderson every inning of every game with a double-digit lead might be a bad thing. The light bulb went on a couple of weeks too late. NRI in Cleveland, probably won't make the team.

Craig's brother. Not a dime's worth of difference between them, and the Angels could do far worse than to make him the fifth infielder in 1996. The real question is: why hasn't anybody hired Daddy Grebeck to be their team's hitting coach? Look at those walk rates!

This makes no sense. Why would you waste 242 ABs on the decomposing corpse of Pedro Guerrero when you could be developing prospects? Actually, at Midland, Guerrero probably looked like a prospect, but it's still a waste of everybody's time. What, he's going to beat Chili Davis out of a job?

Just added to the Angels 40-man roster, but when a player's performance slips in his second year at a level, it's a bad thing. Young enough to rebound, but could also find himself sentenced to a third year in Midland.

One of two Hoseys (no relation) who have been trapped at AAA forever. Dwayne is probably going to be the centerfielder for the Red Sox, but Steve hasn't been so lucky. Could still help some teams, but the Angels aren't one of them. At 27, needs a break now.

JACK HOWELL	1962	3B
Played in Japan from 1992-95. The Angels, for some unfathomable reason, decided he would be an acceptable solution to their third-base hole and signed him in October. So he wasn't good enough to keep his job at 29, but now at 34 he's worth bringing back. R-i-i-ight....

Took an unscheduled leave of absence from the Royals last summer, leading to his release. This should have been a good thing for KC, but they immediately fed many of the ABs to David Howard. Signed by the Angels to cover their second base scar, he was awful, even by his standards. Defense has slipped enough that he has no business on a roster.

One of the worst contracts of the free-agent era comes to a close. The Yankees, with Dave Silvestri ready, Randy Velarde available and Fred Stanley still alive, elected to throw $6.7M at a 32-year-old Owen. Predictably, he was awful, and they dumped him on California for a nondescript minor league reliever. Could still be a decent utility infielder, but is done as a regular.

Born to be a pinch-hitter, Palmeiro is the younger brother of Rafael. He' s left-handed, sprays the ball and walks enough to keep the on-base percentage above average. He is not someone you want as a regular, but could be a good bench player if he gets a shot. He's reached the part of his career where luck becomes a bigger factor than skill.

Now with the White Sox, expected to play left field and bat leadoff. Another player who had his best years in his thirties. Actually was a good player in the late 1980s, but had a terrible time with injuries. When he moved to Detroit, he played less second base, which kept him healthy and in the lineup, and he's turned in five excellent seasons. The power last year was a blip, but he's still a good bet for 100 walks and a .400 OBP.

A mix of skills, amongst which nothing jumps out. With J.T. Snow's good year, there's no job for him in Anaheim, and he's 26, so he needs to break through now. Not as good a bench player as Palmeiro, Grebeck or Correia, so the outlook is poor.

A prospect after the big 1994, he slipped last year due to injuries and lack of plate discipline. About to be passed by George Arias, no reason to think he'll ever have a career.

Some speed, the occasional walk, but the power is completely unacceptable for a major league player. Could eventually latch on as a pinch-runner, but that' s his ceiling.

A great player. Hits for average and power, draws walks, plays an above-average right field with a strong arm. Best player on the team, best RF in the league, and is 27 this year. An MVP candidate.

Not shown: six singles in 30 AB for the Dodgers and Angels. He's not a major league player anymore, and the decision to sign him in August when Disarcina was hurt was a mix of panic and nostalgia. Will probably stick around forever as a coach and manager.

It was a good year by previous J.T. Snow standards, and his mediot stats (.289/24/102, unadjusted) looked nice, but it was an average year overall. His Defensive Average was terrible, calling the Gold Glove into question; he didn't get on base or slug particularly well and he has no speed. This is actually above his level, which makes him part of the problem, not part of the solution. Not that anybody will notice.

Velarde got on the wrong side of Billy Martin one spring, and has paid for it ever since. Despite having the glove to play short and the bat to play third, he's never been a regular at one position. He has been able to move into the role Tony Phillips made popular, playing three infield positions and some left field well, while being a productive hitter. As a utility player or second baseman, he'll be an asset to the Angels, but he probably can't hit enough to play third as a regular anymore.

Hoping to cash in on the tens of fans who remember his days at nearby Cal State Fullerton, the Angels signed Wallach to platoon with Jack Howell. What the Angels were thinking is...well, more than I care to know. This plan will fail. Neither player is a major leaguer at this point.

Best Prospect in 1994: Andrew Lorraine (C)	Best Rookie Starter in 1995: None

This list gives some measure of justification not just for the off-season signings of Abbott, Finley and Ontiveros, but for the musical chairs at the back end of the rotation, where Shawn Boskie, Mike Harkey, Mike Bielecki and Scott Sanderson toiled in 1995. Actually, the Angels have a couple of decent young pitchers in Phil Leftwich and Brian Anderson, but Leftwich is coming off an injury; Anderson should be good someday, but after last season, NASA made him a lucrative offer to switch careers and help cut the cost of launching spacecraft, and the Angels dealt him Cleveland. Look for the Angels to struggle mightily as their rotation ages and they turn to the farm for help.

His strikeouts have fallen off a cliff, while the rest of his numbers have leveled off. It's the line of a pitcher in his mid-thirties, which is why the trend is so disturbing for Abbott, who is 28. The Angels signed him for three years, just under $9M, which seems like a bad gamble. No better than a #3 starter, and could be worse if the control regresses.

Probably just an adjustment year, which wouldn't have mattered much if the Angels had performed to expectations. But their presence in a race forced them to jerk Anderson out of the rotation and bury him in the bullpen in September. Gave up a homer every 4 innings, which is Ackerian, but still had a 2-1 K/BB ratio, and his hits/9 IP wasn't unreasonable. Highly recommended in 1996 and beyond. Traded to Cleveland after the Angels violated the rule about cutting his salary by more than 20%. He should emerge as a 15-game winner in 1997. Highly recommended.

Had a string of good junk relief appearances early in the year, which led to a cameo in the rotation. Got hurt, which effectively ended his year. Might show up on someone's staff this year, might open a deli in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Either way, he'll be dealing meat. In the Braves' camp, will go north as 11th pitcher.

Along with Bielecki and Mike Harkey, formed the back half of the Angel rotation much of the year. Boskie was the best of the bunch, of which I'm sure he's terribly proud. Cut his walk rate enough to provide some hope. He's seven years younger than Mike Bielecki, and on the same track. Probable Angel fourth starter.

His peripheral numbers slipped considerably in 1995, but with very little change to his ERA. He probably deserves a shot in the Angel bullpen, but with three good RH relievers (Percival, Smith, James) there already, it's an uphill battle. For the next five years, could have a good year in middle relief at any time for anyone, but it's tough to predict when or where.

A great #2 starter, but with Langston slipping, he's a #1 now, and he's probably not going to improve much. He's as consistent as they come without ever being dominant. Eats innings like popcorn, throws lots of pitches and stays healthy. One of these things probably has to give, and at 33, it'll probably be an elbow or a shoulder. Maybe one year left at this level.

After blowing out his arm in the late '80s as a prospect for the Orioles, Habyan has fashioned a strong second career has a groundball-throwing, inning-eating middle reliever. With the caveat that this is a very unstable group, Habyan is a good bet to have a year very much in line with his past performance.

I'd make a Midland crack here, but Hancock has an excuse. He tore an anterior cruciate ligament while playing football at Brigham Young, and as you can see is still recovering. He's still just 24, and if he can get 200 good innings under his belt, should have a career. Pitching in the bandbox that is Midland isn't helping.

It's not a bad gamble, since Harvey had some great years for California, he's not going to cost much, and the potential upside is high. But after the Schofield, Howell and Fraser signings, it's hard not to wonder whether the lists for "Free Agents to Sign" and "Guys to Invite to the Old-Timer's Game" got switched. Not healthy in Arizona, probably won't contribute until June, if at all.

Get this: this is one of the Angels' real prospects. Honest. His good 2/3 of a year at Lake Elsinore isn't shown here. Janicki has had elbow problems, with a stress fracture in 1992 and tendinitis in 1994. He pitched well at Lake Elsinore, with a K/BB ratio of nearly 4-1. Should start the year at Midland. If the health problems are truly behind him, he's a good one.

Keling has progressed slowly through the system, having basically the same year every season from 1991-94. He broke through in his second year at Midland, and 1996 will be a pivotal year. The Angels have some openings at the back of their rotation, and Keling could be a candidate in 1997.

All the pitches have taken their toll on Langston, who's slipped considerably in the last two years. At 35, he can no longer be counted on for the quantity or quality of innings he once provided. However, if his role is reduced, he is limited to 100-110 pitches per start and given full rest between starts, he could still rebound and be a good pitcher for a few years. If his role is not adjusted, he will fall off the cliff.

After missing most of 1995 after surgery, Leftwich pitched well at Vancouver at the end of the year and will battle Jason Grimsley for the fifth starter spot. Leftwich isn't going to set the world on fire, but he's considerably better than the Boskie/Bielecki class, and he's never gotten killed at the major league level. Recommended, but watch carefully in spring training.

Signed with the Cubs. Patterson has been as consistent as you can hope any middle reliever will be. While used as a lefty specialist, he can get righties out, which sets him apart from the Rick Honeycutts of the world. 37 this year, but with these guys, how much does it matter? Probably 2-3 good years left.

An amazing year, and a testament to the overvaluing of the "closer" role. Percival had an infinitely better year than Lee Smith, really one of the five best relief seasons ever, contributed much more to the Angels' success than Smith, but was a well-kept secret most of the year. Pitchers who have years like this tend to flame out quickly (Rob Dibble, Duane Ward), so I'm hesitant to predict long-term success, but I think he's a fine pitcher to have in 1996.

Innings pitched have declined for four straight seasons, as back problems have taken more and more out of him. He's still mildly effective, but will never be healthy enough again for it to be relevant.

The question now becomes: does he get into the Hall of Fame? Yes, but in forty years it may look silly. And I don't know if he makes my Hall of Fame. His big advantage over Quisenberry, Gossage, et al, is that his save total will not be passed by a bunch of guys before he becomes eligible, so it will still look impressive. But the career relievers coming along now, like Wetteland, should push the record into the 600s. K/BB deteriorated last year, which is probably the beginning of the end. Off-season knee injury could hamper him. Don't look for a significant contribution until May.

Knuckleballer, bad ERAs which aren't really in line with his peripheral stats. Got a cameo last year with the Phillies after the comet wiped out the pitching staff, and was OK. Could have a career, but with the bias against knuckleballers, needs to pitch well in his next opportunity.

Highly regarded in the Dodger system, Van Ryn never worked out. The Angels snapped him up off waivers last spring and he pitched fairly well out of the bullpen in Midland, and in a dual role at Vancouver. Young enough to have a career, but needs to have some extended success before moving to the majors.

Not regarded as a great prospect, but there's a lot here to like. 2-1 K/BB ratio, decent H/9, still just 25. The problem is that 1995 was his first good full year. His fate is in the hands of others, since he's about fourth in line behind Leftwich, Valera and Springer for a job.
