The Player of the Year and Manager of the Year ballots are similar to the ballots the Baseball Writers Association of America voters use. The Player of the Year ballot has 10 slots, with a point system of 14, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points being awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th places. The Manager of the Year ballot has 3 slots, with a point system of 5, 3, and 1 points being awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.
The Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year ballots are both designed differently than the BBWAA's ballots in those categories. In the case of the Pitcher of the Year, we switched to a five-place ballot long before the BBWAA did, and so we came up with our own point system, one which didn't differ much from the old Cy Young system. (The new BBWAA point system for the Cy Young has more in common with the MVP system.) In the case of our Rookie of the Year, we've lengthened the ballot from three to five places, while the BBWAA has not. The voting system for these two awards is the same - 5 slots, with a point system of 10, 7, 5, 3, and 1 points being awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places.
Tie votes and split votes are not allowed.
You do not have to fill in every space on the ballot, but you can't leave blanks in the middle of your ballot, and you must vote for at least 5 players for Player of the Year, 3 players for Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, and 2 managers for Manager of the Year (if you choose to vote at all in those categories).
If you only want to vote for some of the awards, feel free to do so. It's not unusual for someone who only follows one league closely to only vote for that league's awards, for example.
Pitchers are most definitely eligible for the Player of the Year awards.
To be eligible for the Player of the Year ballots, players (including pitchers) must have appeared in at least 1 major league game this year. To be eligible for the Pitcher of the Year ballots, pitchers must have appeared and pitched in at least 1 major league game this season. Not every player and pitcher is listed on our Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year ballots for practical reasons, but we have tried to include everyone we thought could conceivably receive a serious vote. If we've left anyone out who should be on one of the ballots, let us know. To be eligible for the Rookie of the Year awards, players and pitchers must have been considered rookies by the rules of the BBWAA, which state that players who have previously had 130 at-bats, pitched 50 innings, or spent 45 days on a roster before September 1 (but not on the disabled list) in the major leagues in a previous season are no longer rookies. Note that some players who have been called rookies in the press are not rookies because they have spent a few too many days on the major league roster.
We have further limited the rookies
listed on our ballots to all rookie players who had at least 100 plate
appearances and rookie pitchers who had at least 25 innings pitched, 15
pitching appearances, or 5 starts this past season.
You can only vote for each player once in a single category.
