A player’s initial reaction to an injury often needs to be taken with a grain of salt. If a player always rolls on the ground with the slightest thing, when it happens again, there be an extra pause before people get worried. When Derek Jeter went down late Saturday night, it looked like he simply stumbled to the ground. Slow-motion replay and his initial reaction told a different story, though. Jeter couldn’t put any weight on his ankle, yet he did not want to be carried off the field. Athletic trainer Steve Donahue and manager Joe Girardi helped Jeter off the field and into the clubhouse.
Jeter suffered a broken left ankle and will miss the rest of the playoffs. His expected recovery time is three months. Jeter’s previous bone contusions may have played a role in the break, even if the fracture is not in the same exact location. He underwent further tests yesterday, but the Yankees are still reviewing the results to determine if he will need surgery. Jeter is also expected to meet with a foot/ankle specialist this week.
Jaime Garcia will miss the rest of the postseason and likely a good chunk of the 2013 season with his torn left labrum that will require surgery.
Sean Burnett is expected to undergo minor elbow surgery this week and is expected to make a full recovery in time for spring training. … Mike Napoli is expected to undergo LASIK surgery this week. … Mike Adams is expected to undergo surgery on October 18 to correct Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in his right shoulder. If he’s signed, he could miss the beginning of the 2013 season.
