Additions

John McDonald was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 25 with a strained left oblique and will be eligible to return immediately after the All-Star break. Manager Kirk Gibson admits that team is being conservative and explained that McDonald could have possibly returned in a week. Oblique injuries for hitters usually end up costing them about a month.

Subtractions

Geoff Blum was activated from the 60-day DL yesterday in a corresponding move involving John McDonald. Blum missed 76 days, a total much greater than the average of about a month for infielders. Blum figures to take over for the utility role that McDonald was in.
Bartolo Colon is going to come off the DL to start against the Red Sox today. Colon is luckier than most pitchers in that his oblique injury will only cost him 15 days. The average for starting pitchers is 34 days. Colin will pitch against a Red Sox team that has been struggling at the plate over the last week. At least we know that the stem cell surgery on his shoulder didn’t turn him into a terminator; he does, in fact, continue to break down. Given the fact that Colon is 39 right now, he probably will break down again in the future.
