Collateral Damage Daily for June 1

There were only a few updates on injuries yesterday, though they did involve key members of their respective teams. So without further ado, on to the injuries.

Additions

• Nick Markakis will be placed on the disabled list sometime today after a scheduled surgery this morning for his fractured hamate. He believes he originally suffered the injury while sliding about a week ago, but it was his last at-bat on Tuesday that made things a lot worse. The hamate bone is an odd-shaped bone that is commonly injured by baseball players. Jose Canseco, David Ortiz, and Pablo Sandoval have all had surgery to address fractures. Underneath this hook, blood and nerve vessels pass through. Fractures tend not to heal well. Markakis’ injury doesn’t appear to be that significant because he is initially estimated to only miss two to four weeks. Players often miss six weeks or more, so Markakis appears to be relatively lucky if his initial estimates run true.
• Troy Tulowitzki was placed on the disabled list after an MRI revealed that his left groin strain was more severe than earlier in the year. Tulowitzki felt pain as he was coming out of the batter’s box on Wednesday and had to leave the game shortly afterward. Because the groin is worse than before, the last thing the Rockies want to do is rush him back only for him to rupture a tendon and miss the rest of the season. To play it safe, Tulowitzki is going to be shut down for at least four days before thinking about starting baseball activities. There is a good chance he will only need the minimum 15 days, but groin injuries can be a little tricky. Ee’re going to have to wait three to four days to see how the groin responds to initial treatment.
• Matt Kemp was placed on the disabled list following another strain of his left hamstring on Wednesday. The new strain is a little higher in the hamstring than the previous one, but at least they were both mild or Grade I strains. The bad news is that strains, even mild ones, will take several weeks to months for the healing tissue to fully remodel. That doesn’t mean that Kemp will be in pain the entire time and miss months on end, but it is going to take more than the few weeks he was on the DL before.
