Collateral Damage Daily for April 20

The Red Sox are celebrating 100 years, but another long-standing franchise will have to deal with the disabled list on Friday. The Cardinals will essentially have Lance Berkman and Skip Schumaker trade places on the 15-day DL. The Rays' B.J. Upton will also disappear from the list; his lower back soreness is finally resolved.

Additions

• Lance Berkman aggravated his left calf strain on Wednesday and will need to head to the disabled list in order to finally get it healed. The injury has bothered him since last week. Usually calf strains don't take too much longer than the minimum to heal, but some have persisted for more than three months. Skip Schumaker is going to come off the disabled list and take Berkman's roster spot, so the news isn�t all bad for the Cardinals. The average TAv loss is not too bad at a -0.021, and the average time loss is three weeks.

Subtractions

• B.J. Upton will come off the disabled list today. He has missed over a month due to the soreness he experienced after colliding in the outfield during spring training. Acute lower back injuries such as this are relatively rare in baseball. They occur a lot more often because of gradual degenerative changes caused, in part, by the repetitive nature of the sport. Upton should be able to slide right back into the lineup; rookie Stephen Vogt will likely be sent down.
• Skip Schumaker will be activated today. His oblique strain has cost him about of month of time total, which seems to be about average for these strains. He will get back into the lineup almost immediately with both Jon Jay and Berkman injured.
