Have keeper questions? Still trying to salvage your league? Paul Singman can help.
Paul Singman: Hey all. Welcome to my inaugural BP chat. I'm here to talk about fantasy, keepers, prospects, and anything you want to (almost). Let's begin.
Alex (Anaheim): Is Marcum still rusty from being injured? Should I trust him less than I did prior to him missing time?
Paul Singman: I think it's fair to trust him less than you did pre-injury. With only a few starts left in the season, it's important to evaluate every pitcher on a start-to-start basis, and I'd trust him for his next start against the Mets.
neavling (Detroit): Avasail Garcia has burst onto the scene in Detroit, showing an unusual quickness for someone his size. How do you think he ranks among prospects? Has his stock risen quite a bit since the call up?
Paul Singman: Although his minor league numbers aren't great (still solid though), it's important to keep in mind he's been relatively young at each level, and anything he accomplishes the rest of the season in the majors at age 21 is certainly impressive. He has the tools to be an impact player, but there's still a lot of questions of whether he can realize his potential. Mostly he needs to learn patience at the plate, and his reduction in strikeout rate this year shows he's making progress. Definitely someone to keep an eye on for next year.
captnamerca (Florida): Hi Paul. Do you see Carlos Martinez in a SP role or an RP? And how does he do in either role? Thanks.
Paul Singman: As a hard-thrower without developed secondary pitches, Martinez fits the description of many relievers today. The Cards will keep him starting in the minors, but with a lot of potential starters in the organization, I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up making the transition to relief. I can see him as an impact bullpen arm in the near future.
Some Texan (NYC): What do you make of the Profar/Andrus/Kinsler situation in Arlington? Any chance Profar or Andrus slide over to 2B and give fantasy players another decent 2B option? Lord knows we could use it.
Paul Singman: It's a tricky one, for sure. I've read all sorts of ways to solve this, including moving one of the three to the outfield or trading one. I would guess Kinsler stays at second and the Rangers take the easy way out by simply starting Profar in Triple-A to start the 2013 season. Profar is still a baby at 19, and this delays his service time and allows for the possibility of an injury to solve this fortunate quandary.
edwardarthur (Illinois): Following on the question re Carlos Martinez, same answer re Yordano Ventura?
Paul Singman: Same answer, though given his diminutive size, I think it's even more likely Ventura becomes a bullpen arm. It's gotta be tough for a guy under 150 to maintain his velocity over a full major league season if starting. It's hard not to root for the guy, though.
captnamerca (Florida): What do Arizona and Milwaukee's rotations look like in 2013? (I think we'd all rather have Arizona's problems in that regard)
Paul Singman: As an A's fan I've learned 1) there's no such thing as too much pitching, and 2) when you feel you have too much pitching, it always seems to sort itself out. Arizona is loaded with pitching prospects and I'd guess a rotation of Kennedy, Cahill, Miley, and I'll say Bauer and Corbin, but Skaggs is obviously in the mix too. For Milwaukee I'd venture Gallardo, Fiers, Rogers, Estrada, and then either a free agent or Tyler Thornburg. By Spring Training of next year, the picture will be much clearer.
Paul Singman: And with that it's time to call it a wrap. Thanks to all those who joined in today with questions and for reading along. Good luck the rest of the season and have a good day.
