Welcome to Baseball Prospectus' Friday December 06, 2019 1:00 PM ET chat session with Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat.
This chat will be to discuss the Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Prospects List, released today.
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: Close to the halfway point baby
mickey (phila): The Phillies lost more games than any team for a 5 year stretch 013-17. Have any other teams lost that much and still ended up with such a poor overall farm system as a result?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: Well, that's a little unfair. The best parts of their farm system are now in the majors forming a young core of a playoff contender. Now, that said, most of those pieces other than Nola, they didn't need to deep tank to get.
Zac (Allentown): After a kinda ok few months in Philly, where do you think Adam Haseley would rank if he were still eligible?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: He was fourth on the 25U which would put him roughly on the edges of the 101. Jarrett likes him more than I do, as I get second-division/good fourth outfielder vibes from the profile.
Nc510 (Philadelphia ): What's the deal with Rojas? Seems like a meteoric rise. Is he another toolsy, no power, OF the Phils love to "develop"?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: Dude has pop. Check out those traps. He's a tiny toolshed.
Ed (Clearwater): Where does Logan O’Hoppe fall in your prospect list?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: Prep catchers man. There's some pop there, and the underlying fundamentals for an average catch and throw guy, but the swing is stiff and the overall profile is raw. I pref'd Aparicio among the Wport catchers.
Bram (North Dakota): For a nineteen-year-old middle infielder, Kendall (formerly Logan) Simmons had a really solid year in short-season ball. I know he's never gonna be a batting-average guy, but why doesn't he profile higher? Squint at his statline and George Valera's and they look almost the same, just to troll in hopes of getting an impassioned response.
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: He's fine. Like I get it. I had a few conversations with Wink about him over the course of short-season and list discussion. The tools are intriguing. I just don't feel strong enough that it will come together for him to the point where it really pops.
Murray (Bala): How nervous should we be about Garcia’s terrible year at Lakewood?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: It was bad. No way to sugar coat it. Jarrett lays out some of the reasons why it was bad and the blurb, and god knows he saw him enough. It was a needlessly aggressive assignment, so that can make level of nervousness difficult to parse. He looked better than the statline at least.
bob (philly): Can Spencer Howard be equal to or even better than Nola going forward? Seems to me that the raw stuff is even better than Nola's, but maybe the ability to control it is not quite there yet. Thx
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: We ranked Nola as the 60th best prospect in baseball before 2015. Howard's probably a tier better than that at the moment, but that also wasn't my list (and I'm guessing 2015 Jarrett convinces me to have him 30 spots higher). But we're looking at outcomes, and Nola is basically a #2 starter who has already popped an ace level season. Howard has that level of stuff, but the command issues make me think he ends up more of a good number 3.

Patrick (Merion): Does Damon Jones profile as a reliever or starter long term?
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: I'd give him every chance to stick as a starter as we think there's a bit more projection as a starter if he can hold the high end velo there.
Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat: We will wrap the NL East with the...sigh... Nats on Monday.
