Welcome to Baseball Prospectus' Wednesday February 06, 2019 9:00 PM ET chat session with Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre.
Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre will be releasing their Top 101 Dynasty Prospects list on Wednesday, February 6th. Come drop by and ask them about this, or about how they put up with Craig for all those years.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Hi everyone, thanks for checking in tonight -- this is Ben. Since Bret and I are both responding, we’ll tag our responses with our initials at the end in case you have any follow up questions. And also so that you know exactly who said the dumb thing. - BC
Charlie (San Jose): Who is your all ceiling top 10?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: We’ll start with a fun question. I’d say the top 5 guys on our 101 -- Vladito, Tatito, Robles, Eloy and Robles -- and then I’ll say ... Franco, Kiriloff, Reyes, Florial and Kristian Robinson. Also considered Kopech, Pearson, Valera, etc.
Rich (Willow Springs): I hate to quibble, but this chat is running a little late.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: You’re running a little late. Also I already forgot our rule, but the first answer was Ben. So is this. - BC
Jatheesh (Waterloo): Is Oneil Cruz a top 10 fantasy prospect if he sticks at SS?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He *could* be, but ... Cruz isn’t going to stick at short. He might be very athletic for someone his size, but he’s still someone his size. I think RF is the most likely destination, but won’t rule out third (which is a compliment toward his glove work given his trimmer Aaron Judge-ass frame) - BC
Teddy (New Lenox): Does Jesus Luzardo have ace upside?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He's got backend SP1 upside for me, yea. He's not as overwhelming from a stuff standpoint as someone like Whitley, but the pitchability and command are there to make the most of what he's got. -BS
Squirtle (Toronto): How close was Isaac Paredes to making the list?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He’d probably be in my top-150 because he’s close to contributing now. He’s tough to evaluate in dynasty because most of his value is likely to come as an accumulator, but ... he might not be quite good enough to stay in the lineup every day and accumulate. I don’t hate the bat though. - BC
Sean Miller (65th and Cottage Grove): Worth holding on to Isan Diaz or should I look for a sucker in a points league? Not asking for me... asking for a friend.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I don’t think Diaz is gonna be the guy we hoped he’d become a few years ago, but I do think he’s an everyday starter, especially on a second-division squad like Miami. The dream is he gets to .280 with 25 bombs on a regular basis, but I’d argue that’s his ceiling. Also, thanks for asking a question or eighty Sean/Shawn/Shaun/S. - BC
Seanmiller99 (Japan): Is this the year jeff Hoffman puts it all together and catches a little magic and finishes 4th in cy young? Big big fan of his
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I can’t tell if we’re being trolled or not, but ... no. Hoffman is a back-end starter or more likely a middle reliever at this point. I too once believed, but you gotta know when to fold ‘em. - BC
Hoss (The Plains): Ian Anderson ranked higher on the "regular" prospect list than on the Dynasty list. Is that because his perceived ceiling isn't very high? Thanks!
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I really, really like Anderson. I think it's just a function of us docking all pitchers somewhat given the attrition rate. He also probably won't have the elite strikeout rate we really crave from dynasty guys. But he's very good, and we're excited about him. - BC
Bryzzo (Illinois): How close was Adonis Medina to making the cut? He seems like he is getting a lot of hype with 3 above average pitches.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He was in our honorable mentions section. We like him as a potential fantasy SP4/5, and if you prefer him to any of the last five or six pitchers we listed or a bunch of teenagers we want to gamble on, you're well within your rights. I definitely prefer him to Brandon Lowe, who is only on the list because Bret is bad and dumb and wrong. - BC
Spoiled Rotten (Tinley Park): Who would you rather have in a dynasty? Touki or Soroka?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: So we appreciate everyone's questions, but this is the last one of this ilk we're going to answer, because the response is on our top 101 published today (we prefer Soroka by a wide margin). I say this not to be Mean Online, but to give people a chance to re-ask or re-phrase questions that ended up just as "who do you like better between two guys you just ranked " :) - BC
Miller, Sean (SeanMillerland): My friend and I were having a debate... Who would win in a 60 yard dash, Ben or Bret? Would the winner grade out as 40 /45 speed?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: This is tough to answer because we’re very different. Bret is older, but in better shape. I think I am more athletic overall but the body has become high maintenance. I think I would win in something short-distance like a 60-yard dash, but anything much longer and Bret dusts me. There’s also the possibility (nay, likelihood) that I’d take this race way too seriously and shear my hamstring off the bone. I think it’s important to note I’m confident we’d both lap Craig. - BC
Kurt (Napping with Bryce): Give one good reason not to drop James Kapreillian before this chat is over.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Your league rosters in excess of 150 prospects. Otherwise make like Snoop Dogg ft. Pharrell #topical - BC
Sean M. (Wlodarski Park, IL): If Brendan McKay were a 1 way player, either or, would that have improved his ranking? Not asking for me... asking for a friend.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: At this point we basically consider McKay a one-way player (pitcher). We don't see him as a viable bat. That's why he was prospect "102 for us -- he's a nice mid-rotation prospect but that's about it for dynasty - BC
John (Texas): Larnach over Gorman kinda surprised me. Explain yourselves!
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Larnach has sneaky power and a notably better hit tool. Gorman doesn't have 80-grade power - it's a 30-homer profile for sure, but I don't think the difference obnoxiously large as Larnach can get to 25 himself and he'll reach the majors first.
Collin (Austin): Bret tell me which IFAs you're bidding on in NPL.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I already bought Diego Cartaya and Tucupita Marcano, so I'm just about done with my budget. :) -BS
Sean M (Phoenix, IL): Austin Riley or Hudson Potts...Who makes a bigger impact with their speed? Who stays at 3rd into their 30s?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Neither are speed guys, but if I have to pick between the two I’d pick Potts. But again, I don’t see him as a dude who’s routinely going to challenge for/surpass 10 steals. Potts is also the “safer bet” to stick at third, but only because he’s a double-plus defender there. Riley should stick at third just fine too. - BC
Kevin (Tony's Backroom): Would you deal Adell Patino and Canning for Luzardo? Pitching is hard to come by, 16 team league.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Absolutely not. I don't care how hard pitching is to come by. -BS
Kurt (New Lenox): Is Luis Patino a future ace?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He is not. It would be more *fun* to call every talented young arm a "future ace," but how many fantasy aces are there per season? 8? 10? 15 in really good years? Patino has a live arm and we like him as a fast riser, but if you're asking strictly if he can be a top-15 starter some day I don't see that. Probably the only guys in the minors with that sort of upside right now are Whitley, Reyes and mayyybe Sixto - BC
Larri (Dc): What would your strategy be generally in a dynasty auction draft? Spend big bucks on the top guys (India, Mesa, gorman) or spend mid range dollars on (casas, apostel, gray, ornelas) as a general strategy?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Partially it depends on the depth of your league. The deeper, the more I'd spread it around a bit. This draft class is very wide and not very top-heavy, so if you have the opportunity to leverage some preferences in order to land 3-4 higher end guys rather than 1-2, you're in good shape. -BS
Jason (Rockaway): I miss the TINO podcast
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Maybe the real TINO podcast was the friends you made along the way? It was for us. - BC
Kelsey (Chanahon): My heat isn't working. The kids are all bundled up around the fireplace and I'm enjoying a gin a tonic with my slippers on, smoking a pipe and watching this chat unfold. I just want to thank you guys for giving me something to look forward to after a rotten day. Luis Castillo an ace?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I do not believe he is, and I don't think it's close. I think he ultimately settles in as a very useful but ultimately disappointing SP3/4 (only disappointing because people seem to expect so much out of him). -BS
Adwilk1231 (Boston): Who outside of your top 50 has the best chance to be in the top 10 within the next 2 years.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Basically, look for guys on our top-101 who we pegged as potential high earners (but who come with high or extreme risk). Florial, Cruz, Jordyn Adams, Hunter Greene, etc. You could also go with the guys who are uber far away like Kristian Robinson and Valera, but there just as (if not more) likely to be non-prospects as they are top-10 dudes. - BC
Flex (San Diego): Is Akil Baddoo a Khalil Lee light?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Actually, yea, though Ben might think I'm slighting Lee a bit. I don't think Baddoo is a big power or speed guy, but he'll have enough of both and he'll get on base. -BS
S miller99 (Utah): Seeing a lot of bregman comps for jonathan india lately, some mvps in the future perhaps?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: That is some extremely reckless comping right there, so no. -BS
Mokajige (Earth): Is someone like Sixto, Honeywell, Gore asking too much in return for Mikolas?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: On the one hand, you won't know until you ask. On the other hand it sure as hell is! - BC
Sean of the Dead (Fernway, IL): Pick two 3b to have for the next 6 years out of Elhuris Montero, Nolan Jones, Colton Welker, and Sherten Apostel? Most upside? Highest floor?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Well, we ranked Welker and Jones on the top-101 and had Montero in the HM section. Apostel is a popular sleeper guy right now but is farther away. So that’s the general order. Highest floor is Welker for sure. Most upside is probably Montero or Apostel. - BC
S. Miller (26th and California): No trolling. Just a guy who's trying to have a little fun but really interested in chatting prospects. Biggest helium candidate in the 101 who's stock could jump 40-50 spots? Gotta be a Jordyn Adams type, amirite?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I mean, it's basically anyone with an extreme risk profile. Adams, Robinson, Valera, any of them could be good candidates. -BS
Ben (Boston): BRET BARK TWICE IF YOU'RE IN MILWAUKEE
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: HOW DID YOU KNOW, BEN
John (Texas): I have Alec Hansen as a minor leaguer in a dynasty league but he only cost me $1 when I bought him a few years ago. Is he worth hanging onto given how cheap he is, or has his value taken that much of a dive that I should get rid of him and take a flier on someone else?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Most (sane) people would tell you yes, but I wouldn't drop Hansen just for the sake of dropping him. If there's a dude on our top 101 or HM section who's available, then sure, but I still love the arm. Definitely scared that he's just a reliever at this point though. - BC
Graig Coldstein (Duke): Jordyn Adams, decent shot he's the big riser on the 101 next year?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: It's really all about the hit tool with the uber-toolsy athlete types. If he looks good or even just holds his own against more advanced pitching? You betcha. But I think Adams is going to be a slow burn guy -- Jo Adell is the exception, not the rule - BC
davinhbrown (Moon): What J2 guys from 2016 or 2017 should we keep an eye on this year?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I'm deliberately excluding players from the 101, but I like Everson Pereira, Miguel Hiraldo, Eric Pardinho, Freudis Nova, Yasel Antuna (yes, still) and Leuri Mejia in varying degrees as potential risers. -BS
Dusty (Colorado): I think I'm moving on from Wander Javier. What can you tell me about Shevron Newton?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: We both know you're not, Dusty. Let's not kid ourselves. -BS
Hacek (Downtown): Can Touki Toussaint leapfrog Wright and Soroka or is he a middle reliever?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Lots of Touki questions tonight! I don't think he's leapfrogging Soroka (health permitting), but Touki vs. Wright is more of an open race. I think it's a question of upside vs. stability. Wright is probably going to be a very boring, effective and durable SP3/fantasy SP4/5. Touki could be an IRL SP2/fantasy SP3, or an IRL SP5/fantasy SP6, or a train wreck. Last year was a big step forward for him, but the bullpen risk is very real. Don't think he'd be a middle reliever though -- set-up man or closer. - BC
Sean M (McCarthy Park, IL): With the potential 3 batter minimum rule change, does that take some luster off of Brenden McKay's pitching prospect status? If you guys hypothetically rated him at 57, would that knock him down to, say, 77?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I don't think the rule change is a thing we need to worry about. For better or worse, McKay should be considered a pitching prospect only at this point, unfortunately. -BS
Taylor (Baltimore ): I’m inheriting a dynasty team this year.. First time playing dynasty. Any recommendations for year 1?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Take your time and evaluate your team. Figure out where you are in the contention cycle and let the decisions flow from there. But most of all, have fun. It's the best format out there. -BS
Brent (Orlando): What is Bo Bichette’s ceiling? Are we looking at a .350 OBP, 25 hr and 15 sb?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: As an absolute ceiling? Sure. If anything I have a bit of trouble getting him to that OBP -- I think he'd need to hit .300 or better in order to reach it. Not out of the question he does though. - BC
Sean niller (Minnesota): Chances mallex smith steals 70 bags one year before all said and done? One of my favorite names also
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He had 544 PA last year and stole 40, so I'm gonna say 70 is out of the question. - BC
Jason (Dallas): We only go 84 deep in the minors. I have Florial and J Jones - throw them back to acquire K Robinson, Brunson, Valera or give them another year? Thanks! I’m going to listen to Enya as long as your chat continues.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Any friend of Enya's is a friend of ours. It partially depends how shallow/deep your league is from a number of teams perspective. If it's relatively shallow, I might throw back Jahmai for Robinson. If it's deep, I might throw back Florial for either Robinson or Valera. -BS
Stoops (Stoopville): I have the No. 3 pick in my football dynasty league rookie draft should I take Kyler Murray?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I have him ranked first in my football dynasty rankings this year, but in the interest of full disclosure, he's the only college football player I can name. -BS
Chad (Trenton): What’s the upside of Ronny Mauricio? Can he be Tatis without the steals?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: With a little less OBP, sure. Of course he's years away from getting there. -BS
Charlie (San Jose): Did any of the following get consideration or should they be rostered in leagues that hold around 175 prospects? Julio Rodriguez, Mark vientos, Monte Harrison Jeter Downs, Josh Naylor
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Naylor got semi-serious top 101 consideration, and I threw Harrison into the HM. Vientos and Downs are fine top 175 names as well. Idk which Julio Rodriguez you mean! - BC
Thanks (Fargo): Do you think Andres Gimenez of the Mets can get regular playing time this year or next ? Would he need to switch positions with Cano, Rosario, and even Jed Lowrie. I thought maybe he could go to 2nd before the Cano trade. Thanks
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: This year, no. Next year, sure. If he forces the issue, a spot will open up for him, no matter where it is. I wouldn't overthink the impact on him. -BS
Jimmy (Six Callers Ahead Of Us): Only one C.J. Cron comp in this year's list I'm thinking about unsubscribing.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Some people are mad at us for the recurring CJ Cron jokes. Others want more. A guy just can't win. Kind of like CJ Cron. - BC
thshelley@yahoo.com (Concord, CA): Where would Adley Rutschman and Bobby Witt fall in your Top 101?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Rutschman would fall around the 50-60 range, and him being a catcher is the only thing keeping him from being the top pick in dynasty leagues next year. Witt would likely be in the 60-70 range, as so much can happen in the prep ranks between the winter and the draft, but the tools are 100 percent legit. -BS
easterbrook (ontario canada): With the next wave the Nationals young hitters, what ceiling would you give luis garcia?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He's got top-10 fantasy shortstop upside for me, and for a teenage hitter I like his odds of reaching that ceiling better than most. Bret and I are about the two highest guys you'll find on him anywhere, though. - BC
Sonic Not the Hedgehog (Eating Rings Somewhere): I am rebuilding in a dynasty league and the core of my team is made up of Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Bichette, Adell, Huira, Luzardo, Walker Buehler, Flaherty and Jameson Tallion. Some prospects that I have that are further away are Kelenic, Swaggerty, Hoerner, Oneill Cruz, Bryse Wilson, Eric Pardinho, Graterol, and Corbin Martin. From a roster construction stand point, would you trade Keston Huira for Forrest Whitley because I seem to have more hitting depth and Whitley has a shot to be an ace or would you keep Huira because pitchers are hurt so often and hitters tend to last a decade? Muchas Gracias. I will save you some rings.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I would not make that trade. If you're rebuilding, there's no reason to push in for pitchers until you're ready to turn the corner. -BS
Aaron s (Rochester): Who’s the prospect that no one knows but will be a household name by this time next year???
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Josh Jung. -BS
dtothew (Atlanta, GA): Favorite flavor of question, I'm sure - where would Franklin Barreto rank for you guys, were he still eligible? I get the K% is super high, but he's also very young and a toolshed.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Oh god, Barreto is sort of my kryptonite. I'd probably have pushed for him to rank in the 30s with Gimenez and Urias if he were still eligible, albeit for very different reasons. I still believe, for better or for worse. - BC
Seanmiller99 (Egypt): Giolito return to being the ace everyone knows he is?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Who is everyone? I want to speak to these people. This doesn't sound healthy. -BS
S. Miller (Family Pantry Parking Lot): Favorite Luis in 2028.... Patino or Oviedo?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: We'll probably all be dead so it won't matter. Eat at Arby's. - BC
Trent (Buffalo): When does Peter Alonso make his fantasy presence felt? 2021?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: By Memorial Day. I am skeptical that the Mets infield as currently constructed will stay healthy. -BS
Tom Hagen (The Mattresses): Do Alec Bohm and Jonathan India have any shot at star upside? Or have do I have them correctly pegged as solid regulars that maybe have a few AS seasons in them?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I think Bohm has a better shot at star upside than India, but I think pegging them as solid regulars is a very reasonable approach. -BS
Keaton O DeRocher (@thespokenkeats): How do I become a dynasty expert like the two of you and my champion?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Talk to people who are smarter than you, ask yourself "why" when you miss on dudes and don't assume someone is an idiot just because you rank a player differently. Also get lucky enough to learn from Jason Parks when you're 24 and don't truly know what a hangover is yet. - BC
Carlo (Chicago): I've noticed a trend that George Valera is pretty consistently a top 50 name on fantasy prospect lists and generally outside of the top 100 on regular lists. Can you comment on what might cause such a wide discrepancy?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: IRL prospect writers don't really put too much stock into complex league corner outfielders (I don't think Valera will end up sticking in center). For us, we just want the bat, and he's got the goods. -BS
Fish and Chips (Seaside): Question on how these rankings work. Based on these rankings, in a dynasty format you would always chose the player that is ranked above the other? For example in a dynasty draft would you take Bichette over Whitley because Bichette is ranked 12th while Whitley is ranked 16th? Or do you prefer whitley over the few guys ahead of him like Kiriloff, Riley and Bichette? Just trying to figure out the best way to read the list. Thank you.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: To best use this list, you have to know where you are in the contention cycle and what your league tends to value most. If you're ready to compete right now, there's a good argument for taking, say, Kyle Tucker over Jo Adell, etc. If you have a loaded infield and zero pitching and want to pop Whitley over Bichette, that's fine too. Basically, we make tiers because we're saying you can prefer any one player over any other in that tier and we'd understand. What we wouldn't understand is preferring, like, Kristian Robinson to Jesus Luzardo. When guys are many tiers apart we suggest using it more as a straight valuation list/guide. - BC
Rickey H. (Flipadelphia): Can only keep 6 but can keep them forever (12-Teams). Who gets kept out of JD Martinez, Yelich, Vlad Jr., Soto, Correa, Rizzo, Eloy J, DeGrom, Cluber, Cole, Carrasco. Thanks.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Soto, Vlad, Yelich, JDM, Correa, deGrom. -BS
Mama Vogelbach (Fort Myers): I'd like to have a word about my son's placement-or lack thereof-on the 101.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Hold on, let me send you Ben's home address.. -BS
S. Miller (Olympic Star, IL): Just traded away Trevor Larnach in a 16 team points dynasty league (16 minor league roster spots) as a pot sweetener to get Gary Sanchez. Will I be kicking myself in 2025? Should I feel better I held on to Brent Rooker as consolation?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Rooker is not in the same stratosphere of prospect as Larnach, but trading Larnach for Sanchez is a fine gamble. We like Larnach but I don't think he's going to be a true fantasy cornerstone ever, and Sanchez is a bit of a unicorn at his position. Sanchez won't be catching by 2025 though. - BC
Hacek (Richton park): How far back does Yasel Antuna's injury? Should I hold or move on to another penny stock J2 signing? Antuna's can't be too far off the 101 right?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: A healthy Antuna is a 101 candidate next year, so I think it's too early to fold on him unless you can get someone with similar upside back when you do. -BS
Quail (Man): Who are some of the top contenders to be the next favorite big beefy boy?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I am really, really rooting for Seth Beer. - BC
SGz (LA): I was surprised by the Kikuchi ranking, so I’d really love to hear the thought process of his realistic ceiling, as a Good 4th Starter. Even if he is a Rich Hill comp (limited but valuable innings), wouldn’t 110-125 very good innings calculate to a #3-ish at least?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I don't think he has quite the stuff (or the command of it) to be Rich Hill on a rate basis. Kikuchi is a good arm, but not a special one—he's way more Kenta Maeda than Yu Darvish, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with being Maeda. He's pretty good! -BS
Josh (Tampa Bay): How is Trammell a top 10 option? He doesn't seem to be showing a plus hit or power tool yet in games and isn't even young for his level. I'm confused.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Speed is at a premium in today's game and we believe in the hit tool, at least enough for him to make the most of his wheels. He's also not a knock-the-bat-out-of-his-hands speed guy; he could challenge for 15-or-so homers a season too. That's a damn fine fantasy player if you think the steals can approach 40, which I do - BC
Timmy Mac (The OH): Any rule change you're particularly interested in? Thank for the chat
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Kill the hold. -BS
Mike (Dover): Seth Beer, Jake Burger, Owen Sharts. Name a better trio; go ahead, I'll wait.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Well where the first two go the third usually follows. - BC
Gary Mack (In the back): I've seen India ranked higher than Larnach on most lists. I'm sure its negligible, but why do you guys have Larnach higher?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Larnach makes better and harder contact than India, and it leads him to having a higher ceiling with a similar floor from a value perspective. -BS
Angel Boy (Oakland): Any chance Lewis Thorpe gets a little stuff bump and he's more than just a 4? I still can't ignore the k rate either. I'm more excited than I should be.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I am a Reformed Thorpe Believer. I think his best role is probably in the bullpen. If he does stay in the rotation I don't see him being a particularly meaningful fantasy contributor. I wish I had better news :( - BC
Joe (New York): Who will be the first prospect born in 2000 to make it up to the majors?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Luis Garcia (the Nationals version). -BS
Nothing (Clever): Pure closer prospects are obviously kind of rare since usually they're failed starting pitching prospects, but are there any that fit that description worth keeping an eye on in deeper leagues? Burdi, anyone else?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Dylan Cease, Taylor Hearn and Nate Pearson are guys who I hope can stick in the rotation but who are honestly more likely to be closer-type relievers. Burdi is a good one. Dakota Hudson and Yency Almonte could get there. Another sleeper candidate -- Durbin Feltman in Boston. - BC
Felix (Beloit): I'm disappointed in the Yordan Alvarez comp. 2017 Josh Bell isn't worth the wait.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I'm higher on Alvarez than Ben is, but i don't think the upside is that much more special than he laid out in the description. If he's a .265 hitter with 30 homers, that's a pretty good outcome. -BS
The Special Prosecutor (Bangkok): Was Kyle Muller close to making the list with his apparent increased velocity?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Not really, no. There are just so many pitchers and only so much hate to go around. -BS
Ned (Nabisco): Have you guys ever been wrong?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: We befriended Craig - BC
Eternally Pessimistic Mets Fan (Snowy SF Bay): I heard a comment to the effect that Peter Alonso's defense is 20 grade and he can only hit fastballs. So you're ranking is telling me that's not right . . . . right?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Yes, neither of those things are correct. It's definitely not good defense, but it's not bottom of the scale. -BS
Kurt (🍕 Mia's): How excited should I be about Brent Rooker? I'm dreaming of prime Josh Willingham
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: "I'm dreaming of prime Josh Willingham" is not a sentence I ever expected to read in my life. I suppose that's a pretty good comp for Rooker's upside though. - BC
Charlie (San Jose): Can you forgive me for not sharing this with my league mates? Great work as always!
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Sharing the great content at Baseball Prospectus with everyone you know helps to ensure that we all have jobs next year and the year after and the year after that. We greatly appreciate you doing so! -BS
jwdalton (Kind of cheating): Obviously Meadows is not on the 101 and wasn't in the summer so this may be outside the scope of this chat, but if he was, where would he be? Or framed alternatively, do you still see him as the 20/20 .270 guy or are you concerned about his exit velocity readings?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I think that's a fair expectation for Meadows, yes, and he still has a touch more upside. I would probably rank him right around 30.
Ryan (LA): How much of an impact do you see Nate Lowe having this year?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Not much. I think the Rays leave him in the minors for most of the year. -BS
Charlie (San Jose): Per Craig’s request, where is Geraldo Perdomo?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I mean, probably still in the DR. He doesn't have to report to Arizona for another week or so. -BS
Dave (Chicago): Just traded for Kristian Robinson in my dynasty league. Please say nice things about him.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He could be a top-25 prospect at this time next season! He could also be off the list, but let's stay positive. He's among the best pure upside plays in the low minors. You have good taste. - BC
Ryan (Toronto): Is it time for me to give up on Juan Hillman? :(
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He might still be a useful major leaguer but he was never a particularly impressive dynasty asset. - BC
Alex (Tampa): Sorry for the non 101, but what do you think Glasnow ultimately becomes?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: A frustrating, but usually good starter in the mold of AJ Burnett. -BS
Mokajige (Earth): I'm sure you get this question all the time, but if you had to put a Tomo Ohka comp on any currently active minor leaguer, who would it be?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Adrian Morejon [runs away from Bret] - BC
Brenden (Houston): What type of fantasy impact do you see for Bryse Wilson> Is the concern he is a reliever or does his upside limit him in dynasty
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I think he can start, but I also think he has a lower ceiling than about 7 or 8 other Braves starters. I'm kind of hoping he gets traded to a pitching-needy team. He could be a fine, if uninspiring, fantasy SP5. - BC
Mokajige (Earth): I'm sure you get this question all the time, but if you had to put a Tomo Ohka comp on any currently active minor leaguer, who would it be?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: You would not believe how many times I've been asked this. It's defintely Alec Mills. -BS
S Miller (Purgatory): Thanks for the chat... Appreciate you addressing so many questions. How far was Freudian Nova from the 101? No HM. Was he top 150? Should I look to move him for a weencel Perez or Steele Walker type?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He's probably more in the 150-200 range for me, but he certainly has potential with the bat. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he forced his way onto the list next year. -BS
Get rid of the (mascot, Cleveland): Brayan Rocchio have a shot to be a big riser in a year or two?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: He sure does, but just not sure how much ultimate upside he has. -BS
Dynastychaml (Win now): I'm in a deep league and in winnow mode. But someone is offering me Tatis for Flaherty, Ruiz, and Swaggerty. I have other pitching. I say yes right?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: You do indeed say yes. You leave this chat and you say yes right now. - BC
Ricky (18 and life): Could Josh Naylor be a guy who finds his power stick and never looks back?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: I don't think he has much more than 25-homer power, but yes if he can get to it and combine it with his plate discipline and batting average potential, he will not look back. Signed, the president of the Josh Naylor fan club. -BS
Kris (Kross): Do you still have hope for Corey Ray?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Not particularly, no. -BS
Milo (Dc): What does Corey ray need to do to get to the next level?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Hit - BC
Spoiled Rotten (Tinley Park): That hurt my feelings
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Speaking of hurt feelings I swear we didn't mean to simultaneously double-slam Corey Ray like that! Lolz though - BC
bphil2712 (Missouri ): How close was Julio Rodriguez to your 101? I passed up safer options for the upside in a league that rosters 400+ prospects.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Part of me really wanted to put him on just so we could do the whole "A Mariners prospect" bit again, but I'm sure he'll allow us to do it next year. He was fairly close and he's a fun gamble if you're looking for upside. -BS
Zamzow (Sunset Grill): Does Toussaint still have ace upside?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Did he ever? -BS
Brian (Milwaukee): Brendan Rodgers - not living up to expectations or is his ranking falling due to prospect fatigue?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: A very tiny bit of column a and mostly column b, though he didn't fall very far in our ranking -- we still have him as a top-15 guy. I think it's fair to say we now view him as a potential top-5 or -7 option at 2B/SS rather than an absolute stud. But he's good. We like him - BC
Keaton O. DeRocher (@thespokenkeats): Fortunately, everyone I talk to is smarter than me! Thanks for the quick reply. I just hope one day be half the dynasty player my league champion is.
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: DJ we know this is you - BC
sportsguy21792 (Madison): Who should I be on the lookout for in the Midwest League this summer?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Everyone on the Lake County team. Literally. -BS
Matt (Fresno, CA): Hey, guys, I was just curious about what kind of adjustments you'd make to the Top 101 with Scoresheet in mind. Since the rankings don't account for defense or the other little things that those leagues do, are there certain players you'd move up or down or would you just recommend owners make better note of the standard 101?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: For Scoresheet, I'd recommend basically halving the difference between our list and the regular 101 because of the defensive factor. -BS
Enya (A Secluded Castle): In your opinion, who can say where the road goes? If you already addressed that and I missed it, maybe where the day flows?
Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre: Ahhh, this brings us back. What a great way to end. Thanks very much for all of your questions in the chat, on Twitter and in the comments of the top 101 today. You guys are the best, and we do it all for you <3. Until next time! - BC & BS
