Chat Home

Welcome to Baseball Prospectus' Monday June 12, 2017 7:00 PM ET chat session with Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft.

Printer-
friendly

Steve is a member of the BP Prospect Team, and will be chatting about all the goings on during Day One of the MLB Draft

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft:

Kyle (Kansas City): Any guesses on who the Royals might take?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Hi all! Let's start this draft.

Nope! Too much uncertainty around their selection.

Michael (Minneapolis): Thoughts on Royce Lewis if he goes 1-1?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Wilson Karaman has you all covered right here.

The down low, premium athlete, lots of projectability, can affect the game from all aspects.

Kyle (Oakland): Why would the Athletics take Keston Hiura at #6? He can't play a position!

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: I don't know if that is true, once his shoulder heals he will get every chance possible at 2B. If that doesn't work, then he is a LF with more than enough bat to handle it. One organization I talked to has a 7 hit 45 power on him.

Lyle (Los Angeles): Hunter Greene, pitcher or hitter?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Pitcher, while he does have a lot to like as a hitter; such as athleticism and raw power, he is going to be an arm. He has great athleticism on the mound, has an 80 FB, and, while the spin is inconsistent, it can show really really good.

Bobby (LA): Who is most likely to fall in the draft?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Maybe Pavin Smith? Not many teams are excited about a 1B in the first round, would opt for more upside or a position that is more demanding.

SansRig (Arizona): Now that Beck is gone, who is your favorite prep outfielder?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Bubba Thompson from Alabama. Just oozes athleticism, tools, and has some legitimate power.

Larry (NC): North Carolina represent! How would you compare Beck to others?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: John Manuel on MLB Network I think said it best when he compared him to Aaron Rowand. You don't see this type of physicality from players who play an up the middle position. He's still young and maybeeeee he moves to a COF spot, but you let the process ride out.

JG (San Diego): Is Mackenzie Gore a future front end starter for the Padres?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: That's the goal! It is definitely a long play, he isn't the biggest and he needs to add more physicality. But he shows stamina, arm strength, and a consistent feel for his off-speed arsenal.

SansRig (Kansas City): Do you have any predictions for top guys that could end up going to school? I agree on Thompson, by the way.

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Maybe Daniel Cabrera (prep OF from GA), Terriez Fuller (prep OF from GA as well), and Jake Eder (prep LHP from FL, Vanderbilt commit, tough sign).

Pete (NY): Do you think the Mets have approached the last two drafts any differently without DePodesta?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Tough to tell, you could argue that Justin Dunn fell to their laps last season. Everything past that seemed pretty straightforward.

Sam (NYC): If eligible would Bo Bichette have been picked 1st?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Probably not, he would've been picked higher last season if he had less risk. He still isn't a slam dunk at SS, and while his numbers at Low-A are impressive, we still need to see him against consistently better pitching.

phil (Malaysia): any chance kyle serreno and matt crohan get pick?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Yes to both. Serrano was a legitimate prospect before surgery, someone will pop him later in the draft if he is willing to sign.

Sharky (Watching MLB Network): Any read on who the Mets might take at #20? Thoughts on whether they should be looking for high floor or high ceiling in this draft given the state of their system (and MLB roster)?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: There are some interesting things happening so far in this draft. Jeren Kendall is still on the board, so is Nate Pearson, D.L. Hall, Sam Carlson, and Tanner Houck. Lots of directions they can go with that selection.

SansRig (Los Angeles): I like Dan Tillo a lot. What round do you think that he goes in?

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: A lot of teams I have talked to have taken him off boards because of his medical history. Most likely a 3rd round selection.

Steve Givarz live during the MLB Draft: Sorry for the delay guys, had technical issues with my PC. Going to have to end this tonight. I'll be tweeting on Days 2 and 3 though so check me out @SteveGivarz.
