Last season, Ben Francisco bounced from Toronto to Houston to Tampa Bay, which acquired him at the end of August to hit lefties. Instead, he hit .176 vs. southpaws, with a 590 OPS and 10 strikeouts in 38 plate appearances. Next.

An injury to Domonic Brown forced Francisco into an everyday role. An increase in his walk rate helped him offset a sizable drop in power. He is a good bet to be just about average in every triple-slash category, which has to be worth something—especially off the bench. He was sent to Toronto for a minor-league reliever, where he’ll have a chance to fill in before an even more frustrating, late-arriving set of young hitters.

Francisco killed lefties in 2010—the rap sheet reads .284/.344/.557—and yet he received more plate appearances against righties. The distribution of playing time was a mystery in large part because he was one of the team’s few threats against the sort of lefty relievers that repeatedly confront the Phillies late in games. There were plenty of situations in which starting Francisco against a left-handed pitcher or pinch-hitting him against a LOOGY was the obvious but unexecuted choice. A platoon of Francisco and Ibanez would be more productive than Ibanez alone.

Francisco went almost unnoticed as the add-in to the Cliff Lee blockbuster, but he provided a valuable service to the Phillies as a right-handed bench bat on a team that leans to the left. Having had his chances to start and demonstrating a tweener\'s blend of a bat that is adequate for the corners and a glove that\'s no better than that in center, he should now settle in for a valuable stretch of quality fourth outfieldering.

Francisco\'s solid performance in his first full big-league campaign was a pleasant development, but while the numbers Francisco put up looked brilliant in the light of Jason Michaels\' replacement-level stylings, the harsher sun of the American League revealed his bat to be just about average for the position. He\'s the initial default starter in left, with the Tribe hoping that a little age-27 lightning will strike.

More of an organization player than anything else, Francisco was having the best season of his minor league career when he finally got the call and hit a game-winning home run in his major league debut. Then the Indians acquired Kenny Lofton and that was the end of that. In another organization, Francisco would have an opportunity to stick as an extra outfielder, but this is the wrong organization to be in if that's your ceiling, as there is a large group of guys already in line.

Francisco is one of those college outfielders who do many things well, but nothing well enough to have a long big league career. Francisco split his time evenly between all three outfield positions in 2006, so when the Tribe needs an extra outfielder in 2007 because of a trade or a DL move, he could be the guy who gets the call.
