2016-12-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If the Cardinals decided to upgrade at 3B, who would be reasonably available? (Kingpin from Grinnell, IA) | This is a good question. If we're talking about "upgrade" as in over Jhonny Peralta–who had a couple of performance issues last year, and really isn't optimized as a 3B–you probably don't want to look on the FA market. I mean, Trevor Plouffe is out there and might come cheaply, but I bet you're looking for a more exciting answer. I think the Cards could make a compelling trade offer for Todd Frazier, who looks good in red. Otherwise, I'm not sure. Maybe it's worth taking a flyer on the recently-released Richie Shaffer? The best bet might be going after someone to handle 1B, and keeping Carpenter at third. (Bryan Grosnick) |
2016-05-18 19:00:00 (link to chat) | What are your thoughts on Richie Shaffer? (Dante from Ohio) | Not someone I spend a ton of time thinking about. He's young enough where teams will continue to give him auditions, but really struggled last year in the majors. (George Bissell) |
2016-04-14 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Are you bullish on Richie Shaffer? (Eddy from Tennessee) | Not very. I'm not a scout myself, but I tracked 200+ prospects with regards to their rankings across as many sources as I could find and trust, and Shaffer didn't appear on any of those lists. He could hit some bombs in TB should a perfect storm of injuries hit the Rays, but that's a long shot. (Scooter Hotz) |
2016-04-12 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Richie Shaffer have any impact in 2016 and beyond? (Donny from Philly) | I think he should be there right now, and I'm honestly a little bit confused why he's not. I like his offensive upside quite a bit. (Christopher Crawford) |
2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What's the over/under for Steve Pearce at bats in TB? He should play every game against lefties, but with so many left handed bats on the roster, will he get any starts against righties? (RH from East Coast Bias) | 300? Short-side 1B platoon, plus some utility work? I never got why the Rays devoted so much money (comparatively speaking) to Pearce and LoMo. Just give Richie Shaffer the ball already. (Michael Baumann) |
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Richie Shaffer stick? (JM from CT) | If he hits, yes. Logan Morrison and James Loney shouldn't be viewed as big time obstacles at first. (Mike Gianella) |
2016-02-03 20:00:00 (link to chat) | What kind of production would you expect out of Richie Shaffer if he had regular ABs? (B from Minnesota) | The raw power is immense and he did make some adjustments last year that led to a .270 average in AAA, his best in the upper levels. I think he'd hit some tape measure shots from time to time but major league pitchers would probably chew him up. (Greg Wellemeyer) |
2015-11-16 16:00:00 (link to chat) | What's your take on Richie Shaffer? (Cole Whittier from Pasadena, CA) | I think he is terrific and look forward to watching him play next season. (Jonathan Judge) |
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | With Richie Shaffer's changes at the plate having a positive effect, how do you grade his bat and game power for the future? Can he be a starting 1B for TB for the next few years? (ColeWhittier from Pasadena) | I haven't seen him this year other than T.V., but my take on him off numerous viewings in past years was that it's a long swing with below average bat speed and a lot of swing and miss. I think it's a 3 or 4 hit tool, but the power is very legit. Useful big league piece for me, but he's not a good fit as a 1B on a playoff team. Tampa Bay has (wisely) shown a preference for better defense at 1B, too. Shaffer big and kind of stiff actions in the field. Fine at 1B, but overall package kind of underwhelms me for a 1B. The threshold to be good there is just so high in the big leagues. Liked Shaffer entering this year and pushed for him on our lists, fwiw. I don't think he's terribly different profile from their 1st rounder last year Gillaspie. (Al Skorupa) |
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Richie Shaffer(TB) have a chance to be a regular 1B/OF type? (Chris from Texas) | I have a hard time getting there with Shaffer. I think he's going to struggle to hit, which will limit the in-game power production. If he doesn't have that, he doesn't fit that role very well from an offensive standpoint. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Mark,
Here's one right down the middle for you...
What is your biggest surprise performance from the AFL so far? (captnamerca from sinkhole city, FL) | It's hard to say anything is that surpring in the AFL, because strange things happen out there, but if I had to pick one big performance that has surprised me the most, I'd say Richie Shaffer...and that's not a good thing. For a big, strong guy like him, his complete in ability to hit for power in that offensive environment borders on alarming. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Richie Shaffer, what's holding him back? (jlarsen from chicago) | Shaffer needs to provide more punch at the plate. If he wants profile as an everyday regular Shaffer is going to need to hit for the power that Third Base requires. (Zach Mortimer) |
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat) | What does Richie Shaffer have to do or prove to you that he deserves to be on the BP101? (jlarsen from Chicago) | Have a better overall profile and continue to rake. If the bat continues, he will be a top 101 guy. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects) |
