2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Eric Byrnes is quite annoying right? What do you think of this roboump thing he's doing?
(BNer Chip from Wrigleyville)
I got a soft spot for Eric Byrnes. The only time I got to Arizona for ST I saw him before anyone knew who he was and got him really cheap in fantasy that year. So I have a blind spot, sorry man, lol. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather be trapped in an elevator with, Chistoper Russo or Eric Byrnes?
(BNer Chip from Wrigleyville)
Byrnes and it's not even close. Hell is other people, and 80% of those people are named Mad Dog Russo. (Mike Gianella)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)KG, You rock, thanks for this extended chat! You've been riding Grant Desme's breakout season from the beginning, what kind of upside does he have and do scouts give a comparison?
(Kyle from Deerborn, MI)
I don't know if I'm riding it -- I'm not starting a bandwagon or anything, I just really like power/speed guys. The K's are a big concern, the age a minor one. One very smart guy I know though in a perfect world, if everything goes right, he could end up an Eric Byrnes type. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's the story with Justin Upton? He's been dropped in several of my fantasy leagues and I'm itching to pick him up, but are they really going to send him to AAA? There's no way he's not one of the 3 best OF on that team...
(Chad from NYC)
Grab him. The Diamondbacks are letting Eric Byrnes' $10 million contract dictate his playing time, in part because he's healthy and they have to play him in order to restore some of his value on the trade market. Upton had an awful spring and is off to a bad start, but given how uneven the D-Backs' offense looks, I'd be surprised if he does more than a brief refresher course in Triple-A, if that. His talent level at the moment and his massive upside mean he won't be kept down long. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)what player do you think will turn into the carlos quinten of 2009? a player stuck between AAA and the majors and never gets a chance to prove himself but when he finally does he goes off
(krgrecw from cola sc)
I think it's a bit of a misconception that Quentin was never given an opportunity in Phoenix--he did, and he blew it. The Snakes then made the overlapping decisions to bring up Justin Upton and (unfortunately) to commit to Eric Byrnes on a multi-year deal. The former made sense, and the latter was something a few of us here panned pretty vociferously at the time. The upshot was that Quentin became available, and while dealing from a surplus is fine in principle, the Snakes didn't have a surplus, they had an affectation for Eric Byrnes. That's a gift that's going to keep on giving.

As a result, I don't have an answer per se, in that Quentin's situation was unfortunate, but then his explosion, to this extent, was also very much unanticipated, both inside and outside the game. A year ago, some people might have said Steven Pearce was that guy; it's fun to say that Dallas McPherson could be, but he's not that good either. If you're looking for guys who had bumpy rookie years who should blossom as sophomores, I'd suggest Carlos Gonzalez in Oakland, or Jeff Clement in Seattle. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-08-15 15:00:00 (link to chat)Jon Heyman at SI projects Dunn getting something in the neighborhood of 5 years and $70M in FA, far short of the $100M Bronson Arroyo suggests he anticipates. How does that strike you in terms of what Dunn is worth and what you think hes likely to get?
(Rick from Chicago)
Maybe, but I guess I'm a bit skeptical about that, given that it seems like more than a few teams were reticent about having any interest in him. I mean, sure, Eric Byrnes is making eight figures, so more than $10 million per seems a reasonable expectation, but I guess I don't see that many suitors for Dunn's agent to play off of one another. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Re: Viciously Taunting Fantasy Opponents If someone traded Eric Byrnes at $13 for Bob Wickman at $31 prior to the 2007 season in a 7-keeper NL Only League, that's grounds to make fun of him for the rest of his life, right?
(Ryan from Santa Barbara)
He better have really needed saves, though to be fair, did anyone see Byrnes doing that last year? I think by taunting him, we justify Byrnes season, and I'm not ready to do that. (Marc Normandin)
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've never understood how a player gets to play in Winter Leagues. Do you have to be a resident of a certain country to play? I remember seeing Eric Byrnes playing in Winter Leagues, so it's always been confusing for me.
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
Most of the Latin American winter leagues have limits on the number of foreigners who can be on a roster at one time, but the roster situation is so fluid that the biggest limitation is the willingness of players to go south to play. Players get involved with winter league teams in a number of different ways--some MLB teams have relationships with a Caribbean league team, and their players get channeled there (the Mariners and the Lara Cardinals in Venezuela seem to have that kind of arrangement). Otherwise, I think getting players winter league spots are one of those mysterious things that agents do.

As far as playing in the Caribbean Series, foreign players can play on a national team, so long as it's with the country they first signed with. So Nelson Figueroa plays with Mexico, even though he is Puerto Rican, and played with the Dominican champs in the Dominican League finals. (Derek Jacques)
