2015-03-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it me, or does Dave Stewart already seem like a bigger clown than Kevin Towers?
(Tuffy G from Dillon, TX)
I don't know, he says obnoxious things but we're not his ultimate audience. We're at best third (behind his players and owner) and more likely fifth (behind his coaching staff and the writers themselves, who you have to remember are in the room with him nodding and smiling and giving him non-verbal feedback). I have to remind myself to react to the moves, not the rhetoric, and Stewart doesn't yet have a bad track record (in my opinion) of moves. (Sam Miller)
2014-05-28 14:15:00 (link to chat)If the Royals decide to clean house who do you think they hire? What team do you think they model?
(Peter from St. Petersburg)
Teams often ping-pong between polar opposites, as far as team-building philosophy and management style. It can happen in either direction; sometimes Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer replace Jim Hendry, and sometimes Kevin Towers replaces Josh Byrnes. The Royals, though, seem to keep chasing each unsuccessful regime with another regime that thinks about baseball in much the same way (although like most teams, they've built up their analytics department lately). You'd think that if the current competitive push falls short, they'd do something different and see if drawing walks would work, but maybe David Glass isn't disposed toward that type of hire. (Ben Lindbergh)
2014-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)The D-backs have been playing much better of late than they were to begin the season. In fact, according to their record, they have been one of the best teams in baseball over the last 10-15 games. Do you see them actually getting maybe the 2nd WC? And does this take the heat off of Kevin Towers and Kirk Gibson?
(LukeH from AZ)
That's really ambitious. Not to rule anything out in May, but even if they play at a rate that would make you a playoff team, they've already spotted the field so many games that they'd have to play at a very-good-to-great team level to get there.

For instance, to get to 90 wins, they'd have to go 72-44, which is actually a 101-win pace. That's not their true talent, and I don't see it being all that close. (Zachary Levine)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi again, RJ. If you're Alex Anthopoulos and you want the Jays to make the playoffs in 2014 - what's your first player personnel move? Who do you add, who does the addition replace, and how do you pay for the addition (i.e. pay an unsigned free agent? trade from 25 man roster? trade from farm system?)
(Drifter from Long Branch)
Hmmm ... I guess the obvious answers are signing Drew and/or Morales, and promoting Stroman. Trading for Nick Franklin is probably in the same boat, too. I don't think this is likely, and you could argue it doesn't make sense for Arizona, but how about calling Kevin Towers and seeing what he'd want for Martin Prado? Obviously he hasn't started the season well, and he's under contract through 2016, yet he'd give Toronto a legitimate second baseman. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)with arroyo no longer having a timetable for return and cahills knee, what do you feel the odds are bradley makes this team out of spring? or will az simply go w collmenter and delgado to begin the season?
(hdub from the bleachers)
Lots of questions about Bradley. Last month, Kevin Towers said, "If we think he's ready coming out of the spring and that we're a better ballclub with Archie being on it, he's going to be there." And that was after Arizona signed Arroyo. So I wouldn't expect Bradley to be held back because of service time. If he finishes the spring strong and the team's veteran options aren't available, Towers/Gibson won't hesitate to use him. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Defend Kevin Towers, please. The internet is all "lol Towers is a dummy" whenever he makes a move, but the dude has been consistently successful whenever ownership keeps their noses out of the team's business, and the D'backs are currently in first after a tough 2012.
(That's a secret from This, too.)
I thought the Kennedy deal was fine for both sides. Arizona has so much pitching depth they can afford to shed a starter. Then you think about whether they would've offered him arb or traded him this winter and I don't see them getting much more in return. Besides, the package they got helps them now.

In general I think Towers probably gets a bad rap because he puts weight in things that the community may not, or has insight into areas that we may lack. That doesn't mean he's infallible. Just that he's not a total dummy. And yes, he's built a pretty solid Arizona team, for now and the future. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2013-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where can I find the drugs that Kevin Towers is on?
(MikeyVoges from Cincinnati)
The drugs that make you a well-respected major-league general manager for almost two decades? Yeah, I wish I knew where to find those, too. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which teams do you feel had the best and worst offseason?
(Cole B. from Brooklyn)
I'll take the Nationals for the best and the Diamondbacks for the worst - and it really boils down to Mike Rizzo continuing to operate under the plan of short-term, high-upside deals (like Dan Haren), while Kevin Towers didn't seem to have a coherent strategy. All of us who are baffled by Arizona's revamped outfield might be proven wrong, but it's difficult to see how the D'backs are a better team now than they were in October. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Kevin Towers a crazy person? How can he possibly justify signing aging free-agents to multi-year contracts at over-crowded positions, while accepting cut-rate value for a good asset (Trevor Bauer) in order to address need? Is there some secret GM wisdom behind these moves I'm missing? Thanks!
(JuanBobo from The Sun, AZ)
Thanks for your question, JuanBobo from The Sun, AZ. Kevin Towers is one of the best GMs in the game, and has been for an extended period. He has managed rosters in difficult situations and has been really good for a long time. If he has secret GM wisdom, he doesn't have to share it with us. I am certain there is a method to his actions. (Dan Evans)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Sox go after J. Upton now that AZ has inexplicable added another OF??
(Shawny from Rocky Hill, CT)
Shawny, good to hear from you. If there's one thing I've learned from watching Kevin Towers operate over the years, it's that anything can happen. Jason Kubel didn't seem necessary last off-season, ditto Cody Ross this winter. Upton seems to be available, but I don't know what he would fetch; given his uneven and perplexing development trajectory, I'm not even sure what he's worth. Still, a change of scenery might do him good. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Many Padres fans understandably feel the need to compare the work of Kevin Towers, Jed Hoyer, & Josh Byrnes. Of those three, which do you consider to be doing the best work? Also, what's your favorite museum/attraction of Balboa Park?
(Bryant from San Diego)
Hey Bryant, I owe you some cold barley soup. I like what Towers did in San Diego, although his recent moves in Arizona have been curious. I thought Hoyer handled himself well during his brief tenure here, and I like a lot of what Byrnes has done so far. I thought the Latos/Grandal deal was a bold move that could set the team up for years. His inactivity this winter has been a little disappointing, and I wonder how much of that is due to changing owners. But then, in San Diego there is always something happening with the owners. As for Balboa Park, I dig the Fleet Space Center, Hall of Champions, and just walking along The Prado. You can't go wrong here. (Geoff Young)
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)What will it take to get an Upton in Seattle?
(Marinersstill from Henderson )
Hi Mariners. An Upton, eh? B.J.: Too much money. Justin: Depends on Kevin Towers' mood. Seattle has some good young arms, but I'm not sure it makes sense to trade one of them for a corner outfielder who teases at greatness without ever getting there. (Geoff Young)
