2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat)Mason Martin. Future middle of the order masher or AJ Reed 2.0?
(Campbell from Unjustified)
If I'm picking between those extremes I'll take Reed 2.0, but, as boring as it is the likelihood is between. I'd say a second-division first base type feels reasonable to me. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Seth Beer closer to AJ Reed, or Pete Alonso?
(Alex from Austin)
He's probably closer to Dan Vogelbach, to be honest. On one hand, that's good. Vogelbach has hit 15 homers this year. On the other hand, Vogelbach didn't get regular big-league at-bats until he was 26 because he has significant defensive limitations. Beer has similar limitations and will need the stars to align (or for the NL to move to the DH) to be an everyday guy in the big leagues. (J.P. Breen)
2018-09-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Peter Alonso A.J. Reed 2.0?
(Tuity Fruity from Street Sharks)
I hope not. (Mark Barry)
2017-09-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)AJ Reed is a minor league beast. Does his game eventually play in the majors? Is he Chris Davis 2.0 or is there more to him?
(Jimmy from Mississippi)
I have a soft spot in my heart for giant monsters like A.J. Reed. His height and weight are very similar to mine, although I'd fathom a guess that he has a little more, ya know, muscle. I hope he makes enough contact at the major league level for his power to play. (Collin Whitchurch)
2016-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there still hope for A.J. Reed?
(ColeWhittier from Pasadena, CA)
Of course there is, but if he were theoretically a Quad-A player, it would look a lot like his 2016. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)A.J. Reed or Josh Bell?
(Greg Luzinski from Philadelphia, PA)
Bell. Give me the guy with the major-league hit tool. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-09-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think A.J. Reed or Aaron Judge will be good major league bats? Or have they gone the way of Jon Singleton?
(ColeWhittier from Pasadena, CA)
Judge strikes me more as a Gallo than a Singleton, which truthfully doesn't make me any more sure of what he's capable of. I think I'm always more willing to believe in giant people who can hit baseballs a mile than I should be, but I'd say Judge is unlikely to hit a Singleton styled floor. He'd slay, for instance, in the NPB.

Reed is harder -- I have a real problem with 1B only prospects, even when they look like special bats, and so Reed always worried me. I can only box score scout in the time here, but it seems like it's a decent enough bet that he'll figure something out. But will it be enough to be a good-enough first baseman in the AL West? Ehhhhhhh (Trevor Strunk)
2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you like Tyler White to be productive if he gets the 1B/DH job?
(Hal from Charlotte)
I think that's ultimately A.J. Reed's job, but I'll say this for White: I like any right-handed hitter with even a little power who plays in Houston. Juice Box Stadium is where righties with power go if Santa Claus says they've been good boys. (Michael Baumann)
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some prospects that you feel will make an immediate impact this year in the big leagues?
(Kevin from Iowa)
I guess Byron Buxton and Corey Seager still count. Gotta put them right at the top of the list; defense translates smoothly. A.J. Reed is PECOTA's darling, then Wilson Karaman's, then mine. I love J.O. Berrios, too. Living in Minnesota, I hope he's up here ASAP. Not exactly under the radar, but those are the dudes. (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)A.J. Reed at 55? Is this strictly due to position or something else? Based on his offensive explosion and closeness to MLB he should be much higher.
(hardball from San Diego)
I *believe* I answered this question in the comments of the 101. Let me know if I left anything about your question unanswered there. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)A.J. Reed have a big impact this year for Houston? Not much in his way at the moment, seems to have the approach to succeed early. We looking at a future top-5 1B type here?
(Fred from Philly)
I'm not as high as others *cough* Wilson *cough* on Reed, but I think top-five 1B is a reasonable ceiling. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who are this years Correa, Seager, and Buxton?
(Jared from Oklahoma)
I'll give you a couple prospects/young guys that step into the spotlight for me. A few established younger guys I think will bounce-back are Javier Baez, Jurickson Profar and Joey Gallo...MILB I'll go Nomar Mazara, J.P. Crawford and A.J. Reed as my big-three for hitters. (George Bissell)
2015-10-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hello Sahadev, Who should I pick between A.J. Reed and Greg Bird in my points based fantasy keeper league where rbi's and hr's? Worry that Reed end up DH?
(Sylvain from Granby,QC)
Hmm, Astros have a lot of options to play 1B, but everything I hear is that he's the real deal while stuff I hear on Bird is a bit lukewarm. I'd lean Reed. (Sahadev Sharma)
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Al, In a keeper league and can keep either Mazara or AJ Reed on my minor league roster for next season. Who projects to be the better player in an OBP league?
(Cal Guy from Cal)
I thought A.J. Reed was a very underrated prospect entering 2015. He had a monster junior year at Kentucky and then I liked what I saw in the NYPL. He's a sneaky good keeper in a OBP league. That said, Nomar Mazara is a flat out stud prospect who is going to be an impact big leaguer. Mazara an easy choice for me. (Al Skorupa)
2015-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hello! What are your thoughts on A.J. Reed of the Astros? Legit candidate to be a starting 1B in Houston sometime next year? Neither Singleton or Carter seem to want the job. Thanks!
(howling wolf from Bethesda MD)
It's certainly not out of the question. I still don't think this is a guy who is going to hit for high average at the big league level, but the power is real and the approach is very solid. If he performs in Triple-A next year he absolutely could be in Houston next year. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-08-13 20:00:00 (link to chat)So everyone has been talking about the success of recent graduates from the farm. But what about the rise of some other prospects such as A.J. Reed & Jacob Nottingham (before I shipped him for Kazmir). Care to give an opinion on these 2 players going forward?
(JL from HOU)
Love Nottingham, think he has as much upside as any catcher in the minors except Alfaro if both his hit and power tools travel to the bigs. He's been amazing all year and, in case you haven't noticed, I'm a sucker for the super athletic types...which brings me to Reed. Did you know he closed in college? Probably. I somehow didn't until recently. Reed will hit bombs. (Greg Wellemeyer)
2015-07-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did A.J. Reed get any consideration? Was he more heavily discounted due to his defensive value, hitting in the CAL-league, or his overall skill set?
(Joe from Ohio)
He was mentioned by some of our west coast guys who have seen him dominate the Cal League this season, but even they seem to be concerned that he's taking advantage of inferior pitching and a strong hitting environment. Of course a couple strong weeks in Double-A once he gets promoted could easily put those concerns to rest. (Jeff Moore)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you know anything about Jacob Nottingham? Can he catch and will the bat stick?
(Dave from Houston)
Just got promoted to Lancaster, I'll see him next week for the first time. They were working him much more regularly at first base, and I'm assuming after A.J. Reed's no-really-it-was-time promotion that'll continue to be the case at Lancaster. He certainly did some interesting things to Midwest League pitching in the first half. (Wilson Karaman)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey, Witt, thanks for the chat. What do you got on A.J. Reed? My impression is he's getting by on strength and polish but may not have the bat speed to survive at higher levels. Anywhere close?
(Jake from Kalamazoo)
I think you are correct about him and I wonder how he will fair against better competition. I can see him struggling against better competition. (CJ Wittmann)
