BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 The listed height and weight above seem generous; watching him pitch, one simply cannot buy that Gossett is as tall as Matt Joyce, or that he has filled out enough to weigh 185, or that he has even gone through puberty. Gossett does generate more velocity from his frame than you might think possible, which is why he was a major-college pitcher (Clemson) and a second-round pick, but his fastball is straight, which is why hitters teed off on him last year: His homers allowed extrapolate to 46 in a 200-inning season. Gossett peppers the bottom of the zone from an overhead slot, but his command has to be perfect, and Joe E. Brown covered the subject of perfection decades ago. If he doesn't add something to his game (turning one of his secondaries into a killer, adding some wiggle to his fastball, finally getting his growth spurt), he's probably a reliever soon enough, and not a high-leverage one.
2015 The 2014 second-round pick out of Clemson had a pleasant introduction to pro baseball, breezing through the New York-Penn League for a dozen well-crafted outings of two innings apiece. He has strong command of a low-90s fastball as well as a reliable changeup, which combination should allow him to move quickly up the ladder. Gossett's slider is a certified out pitch that will drive his strikeout totals. His delivery has some funk and mechanical inefficiency, including a long arm path that features a low pick up and a tall slot, so his future might rest in the bullpen if he struggles to endure a starter's workload.

2018-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of RHP Daniel Gossett? In two stints with the A's, he's gotten crushed. But in AAA, he's putting up good numbers. What role, if any, do you think he can have on a major league team?
(Dan from Sacramento)
Honestly, I don't see Gossett as a major piece on this A's team. I think he'd be a nice fit as a long reliever / swingman type who can bail you out after one of your back-end starters goes down ... but he pitched in a lot of games last year without really impressing me. Hitters don't seem to have trouble getting hard contact off him. (Bryan Grosnick)
2017-10-12 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you sort out the A's rotation next season? Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman are the only two locks. You've got Frankie Montas, Raul Alcantara, and Jesse Hahn, who are all out of options. The 4A pitchers - Daniel Gossett, Paul Blackburn, and then Andrew Triggs and Daniel Mengden who showed promise in short stints. And Jharel Cotton who looks great when he isn't giving up homers by the truckload.
(Ken from Palo Alto)
I think Triggs / Blackburn / Mengden have at least earned a shot at it if they're healthy when the season starts. Montas has to be a reliever at this point, no? I might see how Cotton looks in relief also. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Andrew Triggs experiment has failed. When do the A's give Daniel Gossett a chance?
(Dave from San Francisco)
Well, define "failed." I mean, the guy had only two starts in which he allowed more than 2 runs through mid-May. He's hurt. Unless his hip can't be fixed--always a possibility with hips--he should be back. Gossett, who somehow hasn't been in the BP Annual since 2015 despite being only 24, will probably get a call at some point if he keeps pitching this well in Nashville, though I'd guess Paul Blackburn may be in Oakland first. (Rob Mains)
2016-08-15 22:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Daniel Gossett? He's done well in AA, but he is 23 years old.
(Alex from San Francisco)
He's a solid arm. It's unorthodox, there's some funk that he's toned down a bit, but he repeats well in spite of some effort, stays around the zone, and sequences effectively. I think he starts for someone eventually.
