2020-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Mark, thank you for taking your time to answer my question. I thoroughly enjoy the BP chats. What do you think the future holds for Kevin Cron? Does he have the chops to be a starting 1B/DH in MLB or is he pretty much destined for backup and AAA duty for most of his career. On watching him he looks to have some power in his bat.
Thanks, Mike (meswan from Texas) | Hey Mike, thanks for the question!
Cron definitely has some power, but it also feels like that spot is so loaded in Arizona that he's going to have to absolutely go off to get a consistent shot. With no minor-league season, that really hurts. At the risk of being super lazy with the comps, he does remind me of his brother, and I think he'd do well on a second team where there's a little less of a logjam at the cold corner. (Mark Barry) |
2020-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Kevin Cron going to see significant playing time at the MLB level this year? (JayDub from PNW) | Kevin Cron is a first base (and, technically, third base) prospect for the Diamondbacks. The younger brother of C.J. and built very similarly. I do not think he profiles well at third base, and I see him as strictly a 1B/DH type moving forward. The emergence of Christian Walker, who is a surprisingly good defensive 1B, blocks Cron in the short-term. I do not think Walker will have a long leash, and, if he struggles, Cron could see time at 1B. Cron has nothing left to prove in the PCL as he has obliterated it for two straight years. However, I am not confident he will see significant playing time absent a trade or Walker being out of the picture (injury/poor performance). I would expect he makes the OD roster used chiefly as a pinch-hitter. I really would love to see what he could do with an extended opportunity. HUGE power. (Jesse Roche) |
2019-09-23 20:00:00 (link to chat) | lDo you see any similarities between Kevin Cron and Pete Alonzo? I know he's blocked by Walker and maybe he gets moved for that reason, but I think he has a chance to be an impactful bat wherever he plays-----but what are your thoughts on Cron? (bob from philly) | Kevin Cron reminds me of none other than C.J. Lame answer, but it's a very similar profile. Cron lacks the discipline and lift Alonso gets on that swing. Kevin could be C.J., but I personally wouldn't project THAT much higher. Would stick with Walker for sure at the moment if I am ARZ. (Tyler Oringer) |
2019-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | J.P. thanks for the chat and taking my question. Kevin Cron has Kingman, Kittle, Deer, Ruthian power but do you foresee an MLB career or more of a 4A player that will still be playing in AAA in 2025? (Marcus from Tampa, FL) | I think he could legit hold down the weak side of the platoon, as he has historically crushed lefties. Those types of players find it hard to carve out a spot on major-league rosters, though. And to even get that role, he'll have to fix his massive strikeout issues. So I think he's more of a Quad-A guy. (JP Breen) |
2019-06-10 20:00:00 (link to chat) | I just recently picked up Kevin Cron and Josh Naylor when they came up----and I was prety happy about getting them----gonna be tough for both to get playing time right now but they're off to a nice start when they had a chance to play.
Both seem to have a track record of good hit/contact and power tools, so what are your thoughts about their ceilings and their futures with the Padres and D'Backs respectively! Thx.
How do you feel about their ceilings and their futures in the Bigs? (bob from philly) | Bret? Is this you? As much as I've argued with my Internet Dad about being too high on Naylor ... I like Naylor substantially more. I am a bigger believer in the hit tool, even if I think he needs to move to DH yesterday. As for Kevin and the entire Cron family, I just want to say thank you. You have brought me more joy than you could ever know, and I hope you produce a long line of thicc, slugging sons who mash dongers while looking like what I imagine everyone in Iowa looks like. God bless. (Ben Carsley) |
2019-06-10 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Ben, I need to create 3 or 4 roster spots in my MILB roster. (Dynasty, salary cap, H2H, 14 category). Are any of these guys worth holding: Casey Golden, Kevin Cron, Ty France, Mariel Bautista, Moises Gomez, Kelvin Gutierrez, Corey Ray, Kevin Smith, Scott Moss & Jean-Carlos Mejia? Thanks. (slappy123 from Charlotte) | I would not be too concerned about dropping any of those guys, honestly. I'd probably be most inclined to keep Ray thanks to name value/proximity, but I'm not really big on him, either. Also, I know Golden is a Rockie but he's like 90 years old. (Ben Carsley) |
2015-07-28 18:00:00 (link to chat) | What's your take on Kevin Cron? Just California league or something worthwhile? (STEVE from Phoenix) | I'm not a fan of the profile and he's truthfully not really hitting enough to warrant worthwhile consideration at this point. (Mauricio Rubio) |
