2019-04-12 16:00:00 (link to chat)There is only one burning question this season, will Dan Vogelbach steal a base? Or will Dan Symbiorski be a laughing stock?
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
MLB keeps saying 'let the kids play', and if that doesn't mean Vogelbach stealing a base, I don't think it means anything at all. (Darius Austin)
2018-11-29 23:00:00 (link to chat)Why is your chat sooooooo late?
(Flutie's Flakes from Cereal box in the basement)
Because when you live on the right coast, which is the left coast, it ain't late, it's riiiight on time. Plus when you talk about Dan Vogelbach as often as I do in these chats, you kinda have to wait until #afterdark (Wilson Karaman)
2018-01-23 23:00:00 (link to chat)Just for fun, name a guy who argued to rank much higher than he'll end up on the final 101.
(Alan from pomona, ca)
Dan Vogelbach. Speaking of whom, our Mariners Top 10 will drop tomorrow. And I mean that as a warning, this system's a bag of anvils that'll go crashing right on through your floor. (Wilson Karaman)
2017-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Jeimer Candelario off to a great start in AAA do you think the Cubs move him for pitching help this summer ?
(Jim from Chicago)
They moved Dan Vogelbach last summer, but I think that had more to do with him lacking a natural position and they liked the return in Montgomery. I don't think they're trading Ian Happ, but I was saying that about Gleyber Torres at this time a year ago... (George Bissell)
2017-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Glasnow ever figures it out? What is his upside? What are the chances he pans out?
(Jason from Chicago)
I talked to him last summer for BP and got the sense that his size presents mechanical issues that he may never be able to "solve." The upside is immense, but we may have to come to terms with the reality that he's just never going to harness the command and control to reach it. I'd put the chances at 5%. I traded him for Dan Vogelbach in TDGX last month. I'm not optimistic. You want honesty, there it is. (George Bissell)
2017-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)who do you think is the best fantasy prospect that is not considered a good real life prospect?
(kjesanis from Worcester)
It was Dan Vogelbach for awhile. Might be Rowdy Tellez right now. Alex Verdugo & Raimel Tapia also come to mind. (George Bissell)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Ronald Guzman? I need to add him to my 40 man but I have 3 other 1B in Pujols, AJ Reed, & Dan Vogelbach. Should I add him as I know depends on the player I would be dropping. Thanks
(Igor from At a Bar)
First, I'm not Craig Goldstein. He's our foremost expert on all things Guzman. I'd definitely keep Reed & Vogelbach for now. I gotta tell you, I'm terrified of Pujols. There's a chance he's just done at any point because of the foot. (George Bissell)
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Best first base prospect in the minors? Highest ceiling? Highest floor? Whos your favorite? Ok, thats enough questions wrapped in one.
(Fred from CA)
First base? I mean off the top of my head...Gallo or Reed would have the highest ceilings...Cody Bellinger might have the safest floor. He can rake. My favorite is Rowdy Tellez or Dan Vogelbach (I mean technically he's a first baseman, right?) (George Bissell)
2016-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach, what do you grade his hit & power tools? Will he become the full-time DH vs. Rs next year and what type of #s do you see him putting up in his prime?
(ColeWhittier from Pasadena, CA)
I'd put 50 and 60 OFP's on them respectively, although he's another guy who will have to make adjustments. He likes to take a lot of pitches, and while he's not strictly a mistake hitter, his approach in the minors put him in a lot of situations where he was able to take advantage of bad pitches, and those opportunities will shrink in the big leagues. He'll also have to contend with a larger strike zone, which will be an adjustment in and of itself for a guy who learned the minor league version very well. I think he can be an every day DH, but it may take him a while to get going. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2016-09-12 23:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Dan Vogelbach in Seattle?
(George from Moosejaw, Saskatchewan)
I am a long and well-established fan of Vogelbach's hitting skills, and while Seattle wasn't an *ideal* landing spot, it wasn't the worst either. SafeCo has played sneaky alright for left-handed power in recent vintage, and Vogelbach's a good, heady hitter that should be able to get on base at a solid clip wherever he plays. The playable power will be the thing that determines whether he's a stud or more of a good-Billy-Butler type (and I mean that in a good way, Butler was a solid hitter for a few years, if you can believe that).

Let's talk about Prince Far-I for a second. He came to as a bull-voiced prophet of a DJ, earning the nicknake "Voice of Thunder," before migrating into production. Dude was prolific as all hell, and he periodically stole the Roots Radics band from Channel One and renamed 'em the Arabs for a series of records in the late-70's, early-80's. Cry Tuff Dub Encounter: Chapter 1's still my favorite of the bunch. Tubby's-style reverb, thunderous drum claps, the whole nine...here's "The Right Way": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zFI6XsmLio (Wilson Karaman)
2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Could you please rank these prospects by offensive potential only, disregarding defense: Matt Chapman, Dylan Cozens, Rhys Hoskins, Christin Stewart, Bobby Bradley, and Dan Vogelbach?
(cracker73 from Florida )
Off the top of my head: Vogelbach, Bradley, Cozens, Stewart, Hoskins, Chapman. (J.P. Breen)
2016-07-13 15:00:00 (link to chat)More likely to be traded this year: Dan Vogelbach, Kyle Schwarber, none, or both?
(seddrah from Seattle)
Vogelbach; don't see the Cubs moving Schwarber while he's on the DL. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2016-06-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of stat line can Dan Vogelbach put up in 2017 if he gets traded to a AL team where he can get 600 at bats at DH?
(Dan from Chicago)
If you let him get 600 ABs with the Yankees he will mash ton of home runs with how the dimensions are but he literally can't play in the field, and he's not giving you any value on the base paths. Theres no where for him on the Cubs to play, especially with the Cubs roster construction and how Maddon likes to play. So we have a guy that can't play the field, won't provide value on the base paths, and hasn't shown the game power he shows in BP. Its not very promising.

Line? Not my strong suit. He has a great eye which helps him, but theres so much working against him. He would be an improvement over some teams current DHs. Or at least I would give him at bats over some current DHs.

I did see him steal a base once in the MWL though and I will never forget that. (Grant Jones)
2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Chris, with the article on state of the First Base position this morning, can you talk about the position as it currently sits in the minor leagues? It seems like there are some promising bats coming up, but do any fit the traditional first base profile? I'm thinking guys like Dom Smith, Josh Naylor, Dan Vogelbach, Rowdy Tellez, Ronald Guzman, Casey Gillaspie, Josh Ockimey, etc... Thanks!!
(Matthew from KY)
It's definitely in a better place than before. I'm not sold on guys like Vogelbach and Tellez, but I love Smith, I really like Gillaspie and Ockimey is really intriguing. Not a position I love being "loaded" because, well, first base, but it's nice to see some prospects there. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach is having a very good (offensive) season in AAA. How much is his dynasty value suppressed by the possibility of losing first base eligibility?
(Chris from DC)
For me, it's almost unnoticeable. Most teams have 1B or DH at their utility spot. This wouldn't change that. (Bret Sayre)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Can the Red Sox get Dan Vogelbach in a trade? What kind of stat line could he put up if given full time DH duties in 2017?
(Dan from Boston)
I mean, they could get anyone in a trade if they really wanted. In 2017, he could hit .270 with 20-25 homers. (Bret Sayre)
2016-06-21 20:00:00 (link to chat)Future position eligibility aside is there much difference between AJ Reed & Dan Vogelbach? What do you expect from them this year if anything at all & going forward?
(Max from In a Uber)
From what I've heard, Reed's upside is higher, and Reed has more defensive utility as well. Vogelbach sounds like a guy who will be stretched defensively at 1B, so he'll probably have to move the the AL so he can take his 5-6 plate appearances per day without having to play defense. Vogelbach might be a better hitter if both were promoted tomorrow, but Vogelbach has been developing in the minors since 2011 compared to Reed, who started his professional career in 2014. The most likely outcome is that Reed overtakes Vogelbach by the end of this year or early next year and never looks back. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think Dan Vogelbach becomes? I've been fascinated by him since his High School Power Showcase performance.
(someguynamedkenn from New Jersey)
He's been wonderfully assiduous about getting on base throughout his pro career, letting the power development wait while he's honed an approach he can make work against ever more advanced pitching. Now the power seems to be coming, which, look out world. Vogelbach is the Cubs' top trade chip this summer, for my money. (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach. DAN LIGHT TOWER VOGELBACH! Can we get Danimal 300 LMB ABs on the bench next year?
(Scott from of Lincolnshire)
Look, I'm all for Vogelbach, DH-in-waiting, backup first baseman, bench bat. But unless someone can convince the Cubs to carry 11 or 12 pitchers, instead of 13, it ain't happenin'. (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-04-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)Name 3 prospect hitters that you believe will break out and 3 prospect pitchers that you believe will break out. Both cannot be on BP's top 101 list.
(Bill Clinton from Las Vegas)
Hitters: Cornelius Randolph (I own him in my NL-only league), Bobby Bradley, Christian Arroyo (honorable mention to Dan Vogelbach)

Pitchers: Carson Fulmer, Tyler Jay, Frankie Montas (honorable mention to Franklyn Kilome) (Scooter Hotz)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who'd you do: Vogelbach or Schwarber?
(Joey from Chicago )
Kyle Schwarber, though I'm not as enamored with Dan Vogelbach as some are. (Mike Gianella)
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these 1B prospects and do you see any of them being reaching their potential and being MLB All Stars? Cody Bellinger, Bobby Bradley, Dan Vogelbach.
(Craig from Colorado)
Bellinger, Vogelbach, Bradley, all by pretty fair margins. No All-Stars. Bellinger has the best chance to be first-division. (Matthew Trueblood)
2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a believer in Dan Vogelbach?
(Chester from Lynchburg)
Yes, although there isn't much room for error given his lack of a glove. (Mike Gianella)
2015-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cubs fans seem to think Dan Vogelbach is a great prospect. While the plate discipline is nice, I see a bat-only guy who hasn't shown enough game power to be relevant. Thoughts?
(Q-Ball from Chicago)
You have asked the wrong man, for I am an unabashed lover of girth-ed players. He's a poor fit in the NL, as his reaching-for-a-chicken-wing range is not appropriate to display for paying customers at big league games. But he can HIT, man. I always want to see a player with power potential establish his hitting chops before his playable power, and Vogelbach's shown me that. He'll hit for power, don't you worry. Meantime appreciate that he's shown he'll hit, too. (Wilson Karaman)
2015-10-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Regardless of what happens the rest of this series, tough to be disappointed by '15 CHC campaign. What optimizations, in terms of diversifying lineup & improving D, do you see front office making? Adding SP is a no-brainer.
(Matt from Chicago)
This is going to be a capital-F Fun winter for the Cubs and Cubs fans. The defining characteristic of the organization right now is modularity. You can rearrange three dozen pieces into a thousand different set-ups for next season. With their prospect depth, the young guys established on the big-league team and the questions surrounding them, things could break so many different ways. I'll note a couple things I think are inevitable:
1. Dexter Fowler will be given the qualifying offer, and then the Cubs will very politely stop taking his calls. He was great for them, an absolutely perfect fit that catalyzed their season before it even began, but now they need other things in center field. Namely, they need a defensive anchor, someone who can shore up the outfield defense even if the team decides to go into next season with the big bats of Schwarber and Soler in the corners.
2. There will be some consolidation of multiple useful assets into a single, closer to elite one. The model I'm using in my head is the Cardinals' trade for Jason Heyward last November. They had a good player (Shelby Miller) for whom they no longer had room, and a really valuable pop-up pitching prospect (Tyrell Jenkins) who was due to land on the 40-man roster or be made available in the Rule 5 Draft, but whom they couldn't squeeze onto their own 40-man. For future reference, the Cubs' most notable Jenkins types-not only in that they will need to go onto the 40-man roster this year, but in that the Cubs will have a hard time keeping them-for this winter are Jeimer Candelario and Dan Vogelbach. The thing they need to look for in their trade target is well-roundedness. (Matthew Trueblood)
2015-06-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Jonathan Singleton going to be an all star first baseman? Is there any other elite 1B options coming up through the minors? Singleton or Hosmer for the next 5 years on an OBP league?
(Jason from Texas)
I don't think he'll be a perennial All-Star, but I could see him getting hot in April and May for a year and getting a ton of votes. Power attracts All-Star votes, after all. The 1B position is a little thin in the minors, unless you believe Dan Vogelbach can actually play adequate defense at the position. His bat is tremendous, and perhaps still underrated. (J.P. Breen)
2015-02-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any chance Dan Vogelbach could learn to play LF or is he only a DH/1B?
(kbs from Key Largo)
I would pay actual, real dollars to watch him try to play LF. It would be a work of art. (Jordan Gorosh)
2015-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather put in LF as a 9th inning defensive replacement - Manny Ramirez (2nd worst all-time by DEF score) or Dan Vogelbach? I can't get enough of Manny's defensive highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCdp-pSA8kc
(brentdaily from colorado)
Me. (Harry Pavlidis)
2015-01-05 15:00:00 (link to chat)Is Kyle Schwarber a first baseman in the majors, if he makes it?
(Mike from Nashville)
No, he's either a catcher or a left fielder, and the Cubs are going to give him a chance to stick behind the plate. I was more encouraged by his receiving skills than some, but I didn't think he was a butcher back there. Here's the report I wrote this summer?

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=164

He's not great but there are probably worse defensive catchers in the majors right now. I think he'll be good enough to catch 2-3 days per week, which could be huge. Either way, he's not playing first base with the Cubs. Between Anthony Rizzo and Dan Vogelbach, they'll have to find a different spot for him if he can't catch. (Jeff Moore)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who wins a race from home to 1st: Dan Vogelbach or a Slow Loris?
(Craij from Chapel Hill)
Dan Vogelbach plays the game with heart and intensity, dude goes at it hard which can work against him from time to time. He gives maximum effort out there. I saw him steal two bases and score on a passed ball in an inning once.

That said the Loris is the clear favorite here. I love Vogelbach but the man tries real hard to be slow. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-10-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of value would Dan Vogelbach hold in a trade to an American League team? Could he be a primary piece for an average or better everyday player or starting pitcher?
(Bud from AZ)
He has more value to an AL team than to the Cubs. Even if he improves his defense, he's not going to unseat Rizzo, who seems firmly entrenched now. He probably wouldn't get too much right now just by himself, but if he has some success in Double-A, he could really increase his value. It's awfully tough to be more than a 3 win player as a DH, but he could get to that point. If they wanted to re-acquire a guy like Jason Hammel, Vogelbach might get it done straight up if he has a good season this year. (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach, legit prospect who can play 1B/DH or just a big boy who never makes it because of size?
(scott from az)
Not a 1B but the dude can hit. He'll have an MLB career. (I'm required to say this or Bret will fire me) (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Dan Vogelbach can play 1B in the big leagues and if not can he hit enough to be a DH only?
(scott from az)
I don't think he's a reliable first base defender long term, and while there are few prospects with the legitimate potential to hit enough to DH on an everyday basis, Vogelbach is one of those guys. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)What can we expect from Dan Vogelbach from a fantasy standpoint? I can't imagine him playing full-time in the National League for any team, which means he would need to be traded to the American League before he had any fantasy relevance. If and when he does become a regular, does he have the high power upside that the other top Cubs prospects have or will he be closer to a 15 hr Billy Butler type?
(Steve from Los Angeles)
You know, he's gotten into better shape this year and it's a little better out in the field. He'll still have to hit like hell out there to be viable in an NL lineup but it's no longer absurd in my opinion.

He has power but he gets into his own head and that limits the utility overall. I think if he makes it to the majors he can be in the 20-25 HR range rather than the Billy Butler tier. He hits the ball HARD. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bat only... what are the upsides of guys like Preston Tucker, Kennys Vargas, Christian Walker, and Dan Vogelbach? I know a couple may profile as DH types, but what kind of ceilings are we looking at?
(MP from Bluegrass State)
At least Tucker can play the OF. For guys at low positions on the defensive spectrum, they really have to hit. Most of these guys should be good for 20-25 homers, but at 1B or LF, that alone doesn't get you much past second-division regular territory. They also have to hit closer to .300 and show strong on base skills, which may or may not happen. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach. Matt Adams 2.0? Thoughts on Big Dan?
(Bob from Dallas)
I'm not sure where Dan is going to play on the diamond, or if he can play a defensive role on the diamond, but the dude can mash. Guys with his power will get every chance to find a defensive home. (J.P. Breen)
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Dan Vogelbachs lack of power to this point this year hurt your expectations of him at all
(Bob from Grand Rapids)
Dan Vogelbach's limited athleticism, first base profile at best, and nowhere to play on the big league roster hurt my expectations. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach's hitting ability receives rave reviews, but the aura around Vogelbach is very similar to that of Billy Butler during his tenure in the minor leagues. Is that a lazy comp based or a best-case scenario?
(kfazio from WV)
That would be a pretty good outcome for Vogelbach; maybe not best-case scenario because I do believe his offensive gifts are THAT dramatic, but I don't think many teams would argue with that result. (Mark Anderson)
2014-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pick a baseball player and an Olympic sport you'd like to see him try
(John from Russia)
Dan Vogelbach and Alexi Amarista, pairs ice dancing. (Sam Miller)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)1B Dan Vogelbach (CHC) - where do you see him in 2015? DH in the AL? Also, do you really think .300 and 30HR is legit or will he struggle to hit for average against MLB pitching? Thank you!
(fishersehorn31 from VA - The 540)
No reason he can't be a first baseman. Well Anthony Rizzo is a reason, but Rizzo will have to hit more and better than he did last season before he can lay claim to the position long term (yes, I know about the contract). (And wow did the Cubs two young guys signed to long-term deals have lousy seasons last year, huh?)

In a previous chat, Jason Parks was asked about Vogelbach and he said, and I quote, "He can f'n hit!" only he didn't say f'n. So I don't know about .300, but 30 homers isn't out of the question. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)If you did not assess position scarcity, base-running or defense, and were ranking prospect purely on their bat, would Dan Vogelbach be a top 10?
(Mark from Nashville)
Above Soler. Vogelbach can fucking hit. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What will come of Dan Vogelbach?
(Chris from Phoenix)
He needs to find a way to end up on an AL club where he can mash his way to the big leagues and be a DH. Seriously though, he has to get the body under control to the point that he can handle inside heat, and at that point, he's got a chance to rake enough to find his way to the big leagues. (Mark Anderson)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)What would you do with Dan Vogelbach if you were the owner of an NL team? Would you trade him to an AL team or make him learn enough 1B to be useful there? Does he need a montage?
(captnamerca from dunedin)
If Vogelbach was much closer to being big league ready than I would see why Cubs would trade him to an AL team if they didn't think he could play 1B. However, Vogelbach is in Low-A and there is no reason not to let him try to develop his defensive skills, this will continue until the bat to produce in the majors. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does Rizzo's extension mean for Dan Vogelbach? Is he only trade bait now as he most likely has to play 1B (if not DH)? Depending on where he ends up, will he be in the MLB at any point next year in your opinion?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Nothing right now. He's in Low-A. It won't be a problem until its a problem. Having too many good hitters is a first-world problem. Vogelbach will not be in the majors next season. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Aside from the 80-grade name, what distinguishes Rock Shoulders from Dan Vogelbach?
(doog7642 from Blaine, MN)
Vogelbach owns the better hit tool. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)What is Dan Vogelbach's ceiling?
(cracker73 from Florida)
First-division 1B at the major league level; capable of hitting for average and power. (Jason Parks)
