2004 It's a real shock this didn't work out. Anderson was never very good, had been going backward ever since coming into the league, doesn't have great stuff, keeps himself in lousy shape and, by many accounts , has an inflated opinion of his abilities. All things considered, eight appearances with an 8.85 ERA might have been the optimistic expectation. Anderson floated into the Giants' organization after the Reds cut him loose, and will likely end up in this year.
2003 The Pirates gave Anderson 89 major league starts to prove himself, showing great patience in a guy with mediocre control, no strikeout pitch, and a big league weight problem. Finally, after his third straight plus-5 ERA campaign, Pittsburgh released him during the winter meetings. Anderson had the prototypical marginal leftyís skills: deceptive delivery, average-minus fastball, average slider, average splitter, and a plus turned-over change. He might have been able to turn those skills into a league-average ERA in Pittsburgh; itís possible but not likely he can do that with the Reds.
2002 Credit where itís due: the Pirates have stuck with Anderson well beyond any reasonable analysis of his performance dictated, and their persistence has paid off. Anderson lives by keeping the ball down, inducing ground ball after ground ball. That's not a good strategy with the Bucsí current infield, but thereís a hint of a young Jamie Moyer here, and the defense has to improve eventually.
2001 He continued to throw his sinker for strikes, retained his extreme ground-ball tendencies, improved after returning from a demotion (his ERAs were 5.89 before the break and 4.76 after), and was league-average on the whole. That's pretty good for a 24-year-old rookie with a spotty minor-league record. Jimmy Anderson is still too susceptible to the extra-base hit and needs to sharpen his control, but thereís reason for cautious optimism here. For a player who looked like a lost cause two years ago, thatís damn good, and the credit should go to pitching coach Pete Vukovich.
2000 Heís a statistical fraud whose bubblegum-card stats don't tell the whole story. The ERAs and won/lost records are nice, but no pitcher survives in the majors with strikeout-to-walk ratios like that. Anderson hasn't been a truly effective pitcher since 1997, and there's no sign that he's going to start now.
1999 Converted to the bullpen with the same ugly results. There really is no such thing as a pitching prospect, as he looked like a lock after a strong '96 in Double-A.
1998 Just canít seem to jump one level a season without scuffling, which isnít a great sign. However, Andersen remains the top left-handed starting pitcher in the Piratesí farm system, with a solid fastball-slider combination, and will return to Calgary this season to await a midseason callup.
1997 Heís cruised through the minors with a 2.51 ERA. His attitude has been questioned, but not his arm: a fastball/slider combo thatís left minor leaguers pounding balls into the dirt.
