2017-02-13 20:00:00 (link to chat)Will Rupp hold his spot all year? Was last year a fluke?
(Benni from ....?)
I don't think last year was a fluke for Rupp. He hits the ball hard and his exit velocity stats show it. I don't think Rupp will lose the job to Andrew Knapp, his presumptive backup. Jorge Alfaro could take it if he dominates at Triple-A, but that seems unlikely. Alfaro has immense tools and ability but has taken a while to adjust at each level. I don't think Alfaro is seriously pushing for a major league job until 2018. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Phil's prospects Cozens and Hoskins are absolutely destroying the Eastern League and yet they haven't made any mid-season top prospect lists that I've seen. Why do they get so little respect? Do scouts think that their stats are simply a product of the ball park that they play in?
(cracker73 from Florida )
I will admit to being overly biased by a well-out-of-date look at Cozens, and I've been told he looks much better at the plate nowadays, he is also a corner outfielder with remarkably pedestrian numbers outside of the bandbox in Reading and swing-and-miss issues everywhere. Hoskins I like a bit more, as I think the hit tool utility is better, although he is limited to first, which carries its own problems.

Andrew Pullin is slugging over .600 right now. Andrew Knapp hit 11 home runs in 250 PA last season.

This is a known issue, as they say. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)I've been holding on to Andrew Susac as my catcher of the future. Now that he's no longer eligible to be placed on my minor league roster, would you dump him for Andrew Knapp?
(Crash from Durham)
Sure. There seem to be no plans to move Buster Posey to first in the near future and even with Posey playing 20-30 games at first, Susac is blocked. I'm not a big Knapp fan either, but what the hey? (Mike Gianella)
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Andrew Knapp's good season, and Jorge Alfaro coming over in the Hamels trade, who do you think the catcher of the future is for the Phillies?
(Jake from Philadelphia)
Well, I think there's a strong chance it's neither guy, but they both have a shot. Dealing with Knapp first, I don't know he does enough with the glove or bat to profile as an everyday player. He's solid on both ends and he'll play in the bigs, but he's a below average defender who doesn't throw well (though I saw better from his as an amateur, pre-TJ). He's got some pop, but for me he's kind of straddling that line of offensive minded backup catcher... and that's a tough nut to crack. Alfaro I really don't have a lot of history with, but I've encountered more and more people who don't think he will catch. If so, he might just be a solid RF type. I like to phrase things in the context of how I would do things rather than what I think teams will do... I'd want a better defender for my everyday catcher of the future. (Al Skorupa)
2013-06-07 10:30:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Andrew Knapp? He has a beautiful swing but the numbers just started to show this year.
(Adam from Shreveport)
Here's my summary write-up from late May:

A switch-hitter with the chance for average playable power from each side of the plate, Knapp profiles as a bat-first catcher athletic enough to grow into an average defender with pro instruction. The catch-and-throw game is playable, with pop times ranging from 1.98 to 2.10, but some cleanup in his transfer and footwork could conceivably drop his average delivery to a consistent sub-2.0. As a receiver, Knapp is unrefined, with a tendency to let pitches carry his glove out of the zone. He has the lower-body quickness to move side-to-side, but his technical blocking and receiving will require reps to get up to pro speed. Overall, Knapp represents a solid second-to-fourth-round investment, depending on how highly you regard his ability to convert athleticism into a playable defensive skill set with time and instruction. (Nick Faleris on the MLB Draft)
