YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 He may still have rookie eligibility, but Brian Johnson is too old and has been too ineffective to be considered a prospect. The stuff won’t play up out of the bullpen, so Quad-A starting depth appears to be his present and future role.
2017 Since being drafted, Johnson has missed time with a broken face, a shoulder injury, elbow soreness and, most recently, anxiety issues. That collection of maladies has limited him to just 430 innings pitched in more than four years as a professional. Yet Johnson is an advanced enough arm that he still sits on the precipice of a return to the majors. When he felt well enough to climb back on a Pawtucket mound late in the season, he posted a 3.68 ERA, logged at least six innings in more than half his starts and looked like his old self. Of course, looking like his old self means looking like a back-of-the-rotation, crafty lefty but that’s still good news for a Red Sox team that could use some non-Henry Owens starting depth.
2016 For several years now, there's been some disparity in how national scouts and writers described Johnson and what those who watched him on a routine basis had to say. Bereft of a true out pitch or premium velocity, his primary virtues are that he's big and left-handed, portending a starter who can soak up innings. Those qualities alone aren't enough to yield a 2.32 ERA in 330 minor-league innings, however, and to study Johnson is to understand that he is a pitcher with truly remarkable feel for and command of four average pitches. That's not a wonderful profile for Fenway Park, and Johnson experienced elbow issues toward the end of last year that added another red flag to his resume. Still, he is straight out of central casting for “crafty lefty,” and it's easy to envision him sticking around the back end of a major-league rotation for the better part of the next decade.
2015 Johnson lends credence to the oft-issued warning not to scout the stat sheet. If you look at his ERA, WHIP and walk rate at Double-A, you might assume he's on his way to pitching near the front of a major-league rotation. The harsh reality is that Johnson lacks an out pitch, relying on good command and a wide variety of solid offerings to keep hitters off balance. That type of approach can befuddle batters in the mid-to-low minors, but does not always fool major-league hitters more used to pitch sequencing. There's a chance that the whole is greater than the parts here, and Johnson may be able to pitch at the back end of a major-league rotation, but the upside is modest.
2014 A shoulder injury cut out the middle of Johnson's season, but when the 2012 first-rounder made it to the mound, he was productive and earned a promotion from Low-A to High-A. Before the interruptions, it was believed Johnson, a polished lefty with College World Series experience, would shoot through the system as a high-floor, low-ceiling type with a future in the back end of a big-league rotation, powered by a low-to-mid-90s fastball with both sink and tail as well as a change and curve that project as average. If he can avoid another DL stint for the first couple of months of 2014, he'll be back on track and maybe even in Double-A before you know it. He has a very good chance to be the best baseballing Brian Johnson everthe only prior Brian Johnson had just 1.1 WARP for his career.
2013 First-round pick Brian Johnson commands multiple pitches, but none of them are anything spectacular, so neither is his ceiling, though he should move quickly through the system.
