BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Domingo Tapia’s control completely left him in 2013; he was a walk away from doubling his 2012 total in fewer innings. But don't count him out, as he still has the best fastball in the organization—so good, in fact, that his two-seamer suffices as an off-speed pitch.
2013 Tapia is a 6'5" drink of water with a triple-digit right arm who has always flashed surprisingly good control numbers for a teenager with that kind of heat. Last year saw him finally convert the rocket fuel into whiffs, as he leaped from striking out a pedestrian 5.4 men per nine in rookie ball to 8.4 in Single-A. That kind of improvement in a single year while skipping a level at age 20 is special. While he may not develop the kind of breaking pitch a starter needs, his vicious fastball (which oh by the way is a sinker) and improving change are probably good enough to play in any major-league bullpen.

2016-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was looking at TPGMets's list of Mets guys eligible for MiL FA this offseason and is there any shot that Domingo Tapia, Rainy Lara, or Mickey Jannis get rostered or are they all goners? Do any of them have a rabbi left in the org?
(Art from Manhattan)
Rainy Lara should stick around so he can unseat Mark Cohoon for Mets minor league pitcher I have seen the most. They could also probably try him in the pen, since they didn't trade every A+/AA arm like they did last deadline. I saw Jannis in April. It's a knuckleballer. That's my report. /shruggie. No one liked Tapia more than me (and that was because I was way too high), but I don't think the org is treating him like an arm they are too worried about keeping around. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)There are some reports that Domingo Tapia's arm angle could make it difficult for him to develop a consistent breakng ball. How often is that an issue with pitchers? Do you think that will ultimately push Tapia to the pen?
(Vinny from NY)
I've heard similar, but its not a lost cause by any means. He can struggle to stay over the ball from that slot, especially over the breaking ball, which makes it get slurvy and flatten out. I think he might end up in the 'pen, most I wouldn't put him in that box yet. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Completely Gratuitous 4-Team Blockbuster Trade Proposal: -Mets send R.A. Dickey to Red Sox, send Lucas Duda + Domingo Tapia to Indians & send Wilmer Flores to Diamondbacks -Red Sox send Archie Bradley + Anthony Ranaudo to Indians -Indians send Asdrubal Cabrera to Diamondbacks & send Shin-Soo Choo + Vinnie Pestano to Mets -Diamondbacks send Justin Upton to Mets Care to offer gratuitous thoughts?

2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)is Domingo Tapia a legit prospect?
(Pablo from NJ)
He's certainly a legit one because of the arm strength. He has a long way to go in converting from thrower to pitcher. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-04-03 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who are under the rader prospects Mets fans should keep a eye on this coming season ? Thanks Harry
(Harry from Nyc)
Domingo Tapia and Rafael Montero. Both guys have a chance to emerge as our next group of top tier potential ML starting pitchers. They both have power stuff (Tapia routinely touched 100 mph last summer), and both pound the strike zone. (Paul DePodesta)
