2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Erik Goeddel, famous for having an inner elbow so scrambled that 2015 MRIs came back as "dirty," complained of difficulty straightening his arm during his miserable 2017 season. After the season, the team finally gave him another MRI that immediately and clearly diagnosed a large bone spur. Whoops.
2017 Erik Goeddel has battled so many elbow problems in his career that he once had a MRI labeled "dirty" because the doctors couldn't separate the old injuries from new ones, but when healthy, he's a perfectly adequate middle reliever.
2016 Finally, the Mets' doctors have an excuse. Goeddel has had so many arm injuries that, when the team was predictably vague in diagnosing his latest malady in mid-June, he admitted that there was so much scar tissue in his elbow that the doctors literally could not see what was wrong with it. Before then, though, Goeddel had seemed ticketed for high-leverage work, and was solid after returning in September as well. He makes for a different look as a reliever, featuring a splitter and sharp 12-to-6 curve that keep his splits relatively even. So why was he left off the NLCS and World Series rosters after one bad postseason outing, while certain others received chance after chance? You'd have to ask Terry Collins. Or, you know what, don't even bother.
2015 Erik Goeddel converted to relief full-time in 2014, and it went, um, not very well. He did make his debut in September, however, showing a mid-90s fastball and an unremarkable-for-the-big-leagues curve and change.
2014 Erik Goeddel was added to the 40-man roster after another sturdy season as a starter. His future role is probably in the bullpen, where Goeddel can be an interesting short man. Wink.

2017-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I get the sneaking suspicion that the Bruce trade (or lack thereof) is inhibiting Sandy's ability to add payroll, specifically to sign a free agent reliever or two. Does that suspicion have merit, and if so who do you think Sandy will add to the 'pen once he realizes he can't get more than a plugged nickel for Bruce?
(Anthony from Houston)
Why would you suspect that? I mean, they haven't out and out said it, I guess, but they've all but said it. I think they add relief arms that fall through the cracks on February 10th. There's usually a couple, and they can guarantee them late inning opportunities. All they have to do is beat out Hansel Robles and Erik Goeddel. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2015-10-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Miguel Sano, what is his ceiling. I receive a lot off offers for him but have no clue as to what his true value will be.
(OB1 from Tampa)
I love Miguel Sano. He hit one of the longest home runs I have ever seen live, and it was off a major league arm (Erik Goeddel). As hard as he hits, well everything he actually hits, it's still tough to maintain a 35% K-rate and be a regular, especially if he's going to be a DH going forward. I haven't seen a ton of him post-TJ, but I thought he could handle third in the minors, and he is a better athlete than he looks. The approach and the recognition is the approach and recognition though. How do you feel about a healthier Russell Branyan? (Jeffrey Paternostro)
